America/ Canada were apparently kicking ass from 1945 to 2000. The people then got soft, preferred sore bum and went out of their way to vote in idiots that were soft and preferred sore bum too. The future dont look too good, just more sore bum. There was a time when the only pain was back and sometimes putting up with the spouse.

@Taryl Fixes All thought you might enjoy watching this while you had dinner or wound down after messing around with that old david bradley: Tractor Wars Iowa PBS 113K subscribers 261,894 views Feb 26, 2024 For thousands of years, farming was driven by the muscle of either animals or humans. With the invention of the steam engine, industrialists brought steam power to farms. The inventions of the reaper and steel plow began a rush to mechanize farming. In the early 20th century, hundreds of companies were experimenting with vehicles to bring power farming to agriculture. By 1929, Deere, Ford and International Harvester were among the few dozen companies that remained, but the tractor form we recognize today had finally emerged and began rapidly replacing muscle as the primary source of power on the farm.

Dear Tartyl, from a guy that has rebuilt many car and racing magnetos. The points are probably where the difference is and the difference in cost. Chinese points will probably have Tungsten points, the US made points will be Platinum Iridium. So what is the difference? Platinum points will not pit and pile with reversing current and tungsten points will still work but will erode much more quickly. Platinum also has a much higher oxidization resistance. We had to spend 1000's each year getting platinum Iridium points discs made and I developed a process to silver solder the new discs on. Magneto points must still be available because small aircraft engines still use points magnetos. Tungsten is a grey color and Platinum is more of a yellow color. When I was doing them the discs were about $30 each so $60 per set.

Good observation on the material difference. I would figure that the price difference would be on the manufacturing process and materials used. Then again, nowadays the parts could be exactly the same and the company just upcharge due to its brand to make money lol. And yes, small aircraft engines still uses the old style mags with points. Mainly because of FAA regulations since no modifications can be made from original equipment. If you do said modifications, or other upgrades, you’ll have to fill out appropriate paperwork like the STCs and whatnot. Hell, we even still use the old updraft marvel schebler carburetors on the engines. The system is reliable, simple and somewhat forgiving which is quite critical while being in the air. And the fact that the mags with points have its own way to generate electrical energy and provide spark, this is a sure way to keep the engine running during a electrical power loss like a dead battery or failed charging system.

Taryl, I’m sure you know this, but if you didn’t know- Onan used to be its own company. They used to make all their own engines and generators. They were acquired by Cummins and a that’s why a lot of the Onan parts are hard to find and expensive. Seems Cummins doesn’t care much about Onan, even though they make a really stout engine and generator. They were the best for decades

What about the thickness and quality of the plating on the contacts? Should be cadmium plated. That will affect how long they'll last. Also the quality of the material that rubs on the cam? You have no real way to measure the difference of those important aspects in your fine shop. Springs because they're made of metal become more brittle over time. It's why we find broken springs. They're only going to work for so many cycles before they become work hardened enough to finally snap. Armed with this knowledge is it really a good idea to used the spring in your old points? I know, I know, one could argue about the quality of springs coming from Chynah, and you would have a good point, so it's a toss up.. Just food for thought.

It's just an electronic ignition module in the shape of a condenser to make it easy to fit on most cases where the capacitor was bolted to the coil clamp. It should reduce the wear of the points because it runs a smaller current through them, the spark should be somewhat stronger too. The light makes it easy to adjust the timing without external tools but I don't like the idea of such a big light, if I had to use one I think I would paint most of the translucent side with black "liquid electrical tape" leaving only a tiny hole for the light.

Origin, and made in, are entirely different meanings. Manufacturers are using Chinese components in their products. Made in America means the entire part, and its components were made in America. At least, that's how I see it. I retired from a well-known American motorcycle company. There were many parts from all over the world that comprised the final product. The power train, tank, fenders, and frame are made here in America. Can you guess what company I'm referring to? 😅

I always use OEM if I can find and afford them. Onan parts are not cheap but they are made specifically for there engines. I have had problems with aftermarket points sets falling apart and shorting out. I've had a few that the contacts actually welded together which overheated the spring and took the temper out of it. Most aftermarket points have some sort of softer steel contacts instead of Carbon steel contacts.
