Modern threats have prompted a leap in the design and development of powerful defense mechanisms unlike anything that’s ever been seen before.
One of them is the Oerlikon AHEAD Air Burst Munition System, a system that launches ammunition loaded with a cloud of tungsten sub-projectiles that are able to neutralize even the smallest of targets.
Rheinmetall Defence’s mission is to provide friendly forces with the best-possible protection, and their weapon has proven so effective that more and more countries are relying on its innovative mechanism to protect their most vulnerable fronts and transform weaknesses into strong points…
As the company has stated: “In an age where fresh security challenges can literally spring up overnight, being quick off the mark provides a vital edge, enabling a swift, flexible response to new threats.”

Imagine that: a 60 mm machine gun that fires at about 10 rounds per second! No wonder they're unmanned. I just noticed Maldavion's comment. 1000 rpm is 16-17 rps. That's faster than an M-16.

(Think Germany phased out the Gepard around 2010) Propably to fit in a multiporpose point and air defense role for short ranges. The Rheinmetall MANTIS plattform (also in the vid) and the tukish Korkut are good examples.

The real problem is that these amazing weapons have mostly zero chance to end-up in the hands of the people who would need them the most..... : Ground troops/patrols....,we continue to observe in Afghanistan (since 2008) the use of old armored vehicles (VAB amphibious..!!) armed with 1960"s .50cal machine gun and young men often getting pinned down by AK"s and RPG ,ambushed with not much to return proper fire ,waiting anxiously for air-support while taking casualties...these weapons look great on military parades but rarely end up on the battle field and when available ,they are bought by extremely rich small countries from the Gulf that don't even have a regular army ..!!...Note that I was deployed 3 times in Africa during the early 80"s as a French Para-Trooper (Sniper guy) , I mentioned 2008 because during that year a patrol of young men were ambushed in the Afghan mountains Uzbin ,taking heavy loss and these men were using the same useless ,refurbished shitty equipment that we had in 1982...!!.nothing heavy to clear the mountains tops ,useless old smokers that clear in 60 seconds ..!!. no AC in 50°c cramped vehicles..etc. , ..and things have not changed much...except lots of promises with cool vids on YT....

In fact they are programmed to not move in a straight line, at least these weapons leave the operators out of any protection, makes they mince meat on the next run. Hell they have to fired from in front of the aircraft thay are attempting to fire against, how many do you need to cover an area? might as well use small drones, it would be cheaper, these things like a lot of modern weapons are for looks and to make money, not be cost effective or even effective defensive weapons. Why not use a shoulder held Rocket launcher, instead of having to purchase a whole vehicle as part of the system?

@MostlyPennyCat
@MostlyPennyCat 2 года назад
AHEAD is a great munition, the plan to go up against hypersonics is pretty similar, you just create a wider, taller and deeper cloud of tungsten. Hypersonics can barely function through _rain,_ it grinds them to dust. A large dense flak cloud will mince hypersonics. And take "powered with lots of maneuvers" with a grain of salt. Remember we're talking about sea level here, I can't see powered hypersonics sea skimming, it's like flying through soup for them, air resistance is the square of velocity remember. They're not hard maneuvering at sea level and at altitude maneuvering is pointless (it's a geometry thing) So, think of a Mach 4 SAM, doesn't need to be super fancy, Sea Ceptor will do, war head is clouds of tungsten BBs. And here comes a Mach 8 missile that cannot get around it. That's a stationary collision speed of Mach 12. Hell, fill it with copper cones instead of BBs, the collision speed may cause those cones to form into jets like tiny heat munitions, remember the Meissner effect is kinetic not thermal, the explosive is there for propulsion. It's like throwing the missile into a wood chipper.

This is a relatively simple, but highly effective technology. It gives an opportunity to destroy object that are flying on low altitudes and does not rely on tracking its infrared trace. But the main advantage is that the ammunition has a way lower price compared to other air defense systems missiles. I think with some modifications it even may be able to destroy other missiles.

I've been a huge fan of Rheinmetall and their line up of these guns and this programmable ammo for years! Theres also another smaller caliber gun the Narwall that is also extremely impressive and seems to be in this family despite it not having the Ahead Ammo (I think) and all of them have incredible rates of fire that on top of the state of the art ammo makes them frightening to anyone or thing down range of these weapon systems! I think the US Navy should be using this stuff cause from what I've read it severely out classes the phalanx, and the other 25mm remote weapons stations found on ddg 51 and other ships! Madfires for the 57mm is a great improvement but it doesn't hold a candle to the guns Rheinmetall makes especially with drone swarms become more prevalent!
@midgetydeath
@midgetydeath 2 года назад
Keep in mind mounting such a gun and firing it on a ship won’t have the same accuracy. Also this weapon is probably not as lethal as phalanx due to lower mass of subminitions compared to a huge bullet. And phalanx can fire a variety of ammo including creating a shrapnel shield around the ship if I remember correctly. It also does not require separate sensory systems as it has its own already integrated. Space is precious on a ship.

As far as i am aware, no-one has done so, as of yet. I do know that someone a while ago was working on a belt-fed full auto shotgun AR upper, but it never went anywhere, as far as i know, see this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1PRAjroxlJI.html&ab_channel=Moonstalker . I myself have been pondering the idea of a shotgun mini/gatling-gun for some time now, with the idea to use it for either some type of very last minute, very short range C-RAM or anti drone system, or for use as an area denial system. A system like that, with, say, four to six barrels would put a shit ton of buck-shot into the air (depending on the type of buck-shot and the materials used, of course). Not something you would wanna walk into, unless you want to end up as minced meat.
@richardpeterson3753
@richardpeterson3753 2 года назад
It would work in a Gatling platform.from a mechanical point of view.the main issue would be to settle on riffling for slugs only,or smoothbore for shot,and frangible rounds,such as the infamous wax loads we use in the south.obviously that exact round would not meet mil specs.but there are similar rounds in use.in a way I think 00 buck would be devastating from a high cyclic rate of fire in a minigun.espesially with a high density and very hard metal,such as tungsten carbide.volume of fire combined with shot spread would devastate targets.but there is a range issue,shotgun rounds tend to be very short range,not ideal for a Gatling gun setup.and there would be the issue of wads getting potentially stuck in the barrels.im sure like most problems,these are just needing some good engineering to work around.i could certainly see the system particularly useful on drones.they would be fast and manoverable enough to be able to work around the shorter range,and maximize the croud control aspect
@keithellison716
@keithellison716 2 года назад
@@fjvmunsterman I hadnt heard of anyone doing it either. (cost per shot / hit probability for a ~500 mm dia target) given that they are quite small and only a few hundred dollars each, if they approach in loose formation or even one at a time to maximize ammo spent in repelling them? for highly agile drones flying semi-random evasive manuevers would the time delay between firing interception force wider (earlier) detonations/lower hit probabilities? -- basically asking, how much cheaper do either the ammo or the drones need to get to defeat each other, and which has the lower floor.

wow that's terrifying. I'm imagining it getting scaled down in size in the future... there will be a point that every infantryman's rifle has bullets with that capability, every mortar system can have that option, artillery shells with sub-munition bomblets.. ... devastating stuff whew.

Well, most of what your talking about has already been developed. Arty with submunitions have been around for a while and I recall seeing "smart" munitions being developed for mortars several years ago. Besides, if this is what is not classified, just imagine what they are playing with these days that they don't want folks to know about

There are limits dictated by physics to miniaturizing munitions. In particular, the less mass a round has the more you have to make up for it with velocity. Aside from that, cost effectiveness is a critical factor. If you spend 10 times as much to get a 10% increase in effectiveness then an enemy who simply doubles their inventory can more than match your advantage for just ⅕ of what you spent. This creates an opportunity for peer opponents and creates an opening for smaller opponents to swing above their theoretical weight class. Ukraine is a perfect example of just such a scenario where a highly optimized small nation is able to stall the advance of a superior military

Jesus, I hate the tsunami of corporate buzzwordspeak. Sadly, that's the kind of silliness overpaid purchasing officers listen to. @Train 2noplace haha, yeah. Just like the Future Force Warrior 'system', XM8 Rifle, and Objective Infantry Combat Weapon. Which were designed for their looks just to trigger old Generals that remember space-age ray guns from Buck Rogers comics and Starship Troopers. Because silly old timers with stars on their shoulders are the ones who approve these things, not having to ever use it themselves. Like Patton's ridiculous tanker uniform.

Does the US buy this thing? I've never heard of it. If they don't buy it, they'd better have a good excuse. Maybe the army would consider it redundant with the Vulcan cannon. And obviously, the Navy doesn't need it and has no place to put it.

to my knowledge they dont because they have had a system that can do the same job longer than this has been around using cheaper lower tech ammunition they took the phalanx system from the navy stuck it on a trailer and changed the 20mm rounds used by the navy to self destructing he rounds that have a timed fuse so the rounds that miss explode in the air before reaching the ground to minimize collateral damage it can track and shoot down stuff as small as incoming mortars it uses a lot more rounds but they are most likely far cheaper and not a proprietary munition
@Ariccio123
@Ariccio123 2 года назад
I think there's been work looking into *somewhat* similar systems, particularly for drone defense. I read a naval postgraduate study a few months ago where they found the navy would likely need more CIWS in the form of mixed phalanx and radar directed mk 388 would be the *only* way to defend against large drone swarms.

@@Kenneth_James what are you talking dude? Rheinmetall is a German defence industry and is not owned by Russians at all. Also Rheinmetall produce the gun tower for the challenger 3 (British tank) and produce close too all armored vehicles from the German forces including Leopard 2A7. There is no way a Russian oligarch can own a shit on this company.

The US Navy needs to seriously consider this system on the next large surface combatant / DDG-X, Ford class carriers or even on the FFG-X cause this is way better than the Phalanx (cwis) and looks to also have pretty good offensive applications too!

How would this do against heavy artillery rounds like 155mm or 203mm? Would it be affective or can it only be used for lighter? This could be used in heavy rounds against different vehicles. Not to knock them out but to “blind” them. You hit a ship with it might cause minimal structural damage but could disable sensor or radar.

It is meant to fight incoming mortar rounds as well as artillery or drones. It is also used on ships, stationary for camps or on a vehicle.

Looks to me like that is a hungry beastie. Glad it's not me carrying or paying for ammunition for it. Impressive though. A bit leading flying ducks with a 12 gauge . 12 guage guns historically had expensive ammunition too. The tungsten pellet loading must be heavy and the propellant load must be high. I would expect short barrel life given the quick firing must heat barrels fast when pushing heavy projectiles fast and at such close spacing. Even shoulder guns shoot barrels out fast when loaded hot.
