Making my own, using no-name aftermarket, and generally discussing non-branded TTS Tool Holding for small cnc milling machines. Just sharing what I have to share on spindle runout, tool holder runout, and methods for making these very useful accessories for a lot of home machining enthusiasts

You are correct... The test indicator is a heartbreaker... Crushing hopes and dreams with extreme swiftness.

once the indicator is zeroed, all bets, emotions, investments, joys, fears, hatred, conflict, and curiosity, are off the table

While I recognized that you didn't hit the Jacob's chuck particularly hard to set it on the taper I believe its recognized practice to wind the chuck open and do any striking on the body of the chuck and not the jaws. Hitting the extended jaws can break the teeth on the jaw scroll and/or the scroll itself resulting in a useless chuck. Also the screw in the chuck to hold it on, especially a threaded arbour like on a hand drill, is usually a left hand thread to resist the temptation of the chuck to unthread (unloosen) itself from the arbour under normal use. If that matters on a tapered arbour I'm not about to make an argument. Just noting. Otherwise an interesting video. Thanks from Canada's banana belt.🤞🇨🇦🍌🥋🇺🇦🕊️🇺🇲👍

I think if you turned your drill chuck hilder in situ in the mill instead of the lathe, the concentricity might have been better!

First thing I did after getting a cnc mill was spend about 3 months trying various collets, holders, end mills, feeds, speeds, materials, collet clock positions, dial testers and adjusting/locking gibs in an attempt to get the best finish possible. I kept being told "bigger end mills leave a better finish" and everyone thought my 0.0005-0.0007" of runout at the end mill was high. I was using genuine TTS ER32 holders and shars 0.0003" collets with pretty much no runout at the R8 taper and 0.0002" or so with R8 collet at the end mill. Actually all of my R8 collets had very little runout(believe they were Precision Matthews) while the TTS weldon style 3/8 and 1/2 had more runout then my TTS ER32 holders none of them were anything to write home about so the numbers you got here aren't bad at all considering the genuine Tormach stuff is about 3 times the price.

Thanks for the proof. I don’t feel quite as bad spending the extra on name brand. I need all the help I can get.

a point of concern to me about the tts is the entire consentrisety situation depend on the collet. my machine has mt4 taper. had to make my own collet. does not run repeatable at all. even made a step in a holder to regester on the spindle nose.....no joy. i think the system is highly dependent on accuracy of the collet. spindle bearings also are a big deal. nead to replace mine before i go any further.

Best not to wack the Jacobs chuck jaws… try adjusting them inwards first
