G'day Viewers,
Sorry about the lapse in videos recently. I' m still working on all the projects and will be making more stuff soon. Have been a little occupied with some personal/medical stuff lately (nothing too fatal but it has required my attention).
Here's a build video of the trommel we put together over the last couple of days. We will be using it to produce gravel and stone fill for various concreting and landscaping projects.
More to come,
Cheers,
Tarn.

Should have mounted the motor above the spoils.

Fantastic build. Is this thing still operating? Or did the soil muck up the system? Any lessons learned or improvements you’d of made?

Nice, one thought: why didn’t you put the motor on top instead of underneath? That would keep dirt out of the running mechanism.
@jasperschaible8999
@jasperschaible8999 6 лет назад
Motors are often under slung as weight of the motor on a pivot beam tensions the belts without need for tension devices. And obviously, this application calls for sealed motor and bearings. Still, an alternative configuration would be an improvement not just for motor health, but better positioning could allow placement of a wheelbarrow (ect) underneath to catch fines which are otherwise pouring on this motor....
@bendova3667
@bendova3667 5 лет назад
Cannot, because the belt will pull the trommel/drum up and off the spinning wheels, which will run out of place. If you hold the drum down, it won’t spin.
@djames2377
@djames2377 Год назад
You need plates on the sides to send material back where you want it instead of coming out of the sides. You need your motor above your trommel to keep dust and debris from messing up your motor
@noneofyourbusiness3553
@noneofyourbusiness3553 7 месяцев назад
You're not wrong but, it doesn't matter. That drum on the trommel would have been in the scrap bin 6 months after it was built. I tried it with drums. They are never truly round. As they flex when they are revolving they are stress fracturing. I solved the problem by rebuilding mine with 30" outer rims from a scrapped tractor.

Cool. Cheap options are great indeed! Now you just need to make a diy conveyor to save that poor bastard doin all the shovel work :P
@algallego
@algallego 4 года назад
The poor bastard doing all the shovel work was the same guy who built the dog gone thing! Beautiful piece of machinery on the cheap, I do say!!!! I could sure use something like that and someone else to shovel my gravel for me, too. Most of the dirt I'm sifting, thankfully, isn't as coarse as that gravel he's pulling, mostly 3/8" to 1/2" crushed granite and any underlying rocks deeper in the soil bed left behind by the developers. Got a short run of 3-8" river rock I'm clearing from the back yard and re-purposing into some gabion walls & planters, as well as vehicle barriers for the yard out front. Just don't know where I'd store such a behemoth like that sieve! Even as badly as I want one for efficiency of work effort, I'd have to rent some remote city yard space just to store it off the home site. I live in an HOA community OVERLORDED by the "friendly" neighborhood Gestapo and I have a wife who likes everything frilly foo-foo all around her-- she can't bear to see anything looking even slightly industrial roundabout her-- not even a little partitioned storage area behind a blind. "Something's gotta give," I always tell her-- nothing ever does from her. 😆

I would at least cover the motor all the way with metal so no dirt gets in it. GREAT SCREENER!

2 problems, you cant fully cover due to heat generation from the motor, other it looks as though the weight of the motor assembly is what is being used as a tensioner for the belt. The hole motor assembly needs to be move out to the side and chain driven, with 2-4 rollers on top pressing down to act as the drum stabilizers so there is no misalignment issues.

Nice invention. I thought about making such roller screener but I decided to make a sloped vibration screen. On this roller I would make frame above and mount the motor above.

@yokotaashi

You guys should install some short guide rails (maybe 1/4 inch) periodically to guide the larger rocks out quickly (like rifling). If you suspend them 2 inches above the screen, they won't interact much with the gravel as it's spinning but will still deflect the bigger rocks.

You're not going to live long welding galvanized without some kind of respirator or at least a fan to blow those fumes away
@JonDingle
@JonDingle 5 лет назад
He is outside so he isn't exactly going to die from welding galvanized steel when the chance of inhaling fumes is at best zero. I have been welding galvanized steel inside high roof buildings with a breeze blowing through for years and I don't cough or splutter and I am not dead. So, in essence you are wrong because if the situation is right (not enclosed and you grind off the galvanized finish) you don't need respirators.
@I_am_Diogenes
@I_am_Diogenes 4 года назад
At least gringo is aware there is a danger when welding galvanized steel . You would be surprised how many folks running around with welding/cutting tools do not know that simple fact . I had been welding almost ten years before I found out it was toxic , fortunately I never worked galvanized prior to that . Better too safe than not safe enough .

I was inspired by your design and used it for my own version of it. ru-vid.com8ZyR0zYPQj4?feature=share I used a treadmill motor for mine. It’s not designed for commercial application so I’m ok with the motor being a little lighter duty. Thanks for the video!

If you make concrete with it you should wash it first I think. So .... build a washer and make sure you put a sluice in it to catch any gold or other precious things in the dirt/ sand in the process!

Well-thought-out and constructed trommel. There is only one major thing that I would have done differently, that being, I would have mounted the motor and pillow block assembly either directly above or behind the trommel unit to keep all the trash away from those necessary parts.

@@wearebacteria well I was thinking of driving the drum initially but watched a few more videos and bottom rollers looks the best and requires no drive tension as the traction is created with gravity. also its now possible to build other drives off the powered axle driving the drum, like an outfeed conveyor for the fines to load a vehicle

David Emery - It seems to me, the used 2 Standard Fuel Drums! In Canada we called them 45 Gallon Drums! There are smaller Drums, of Similar Ribbed Style, that I have seen, sometimes, that are 20 or 30 Gallon Drums, too! For a tinier one, 5 Gallon Buckets, could be The Base, but would need some Strength added, likely!
