Why did you not use a water turbine? You have low head but high volume so having a turbine inline with a water siphon system could’ve yielded much higher efficiency I remember you saying in the first videos that you wanted to keep the old history vibe on your land and i thinks it’s still pretty cool. Maybe install the turbine generator and keep the waterwheel for aesthetics? Keep up the good videos
@LoftisPartyofSix
@LoftisPartyofSix Год назад
I definitely want to try this eventually. Spencer @ Langston Alternative Power makes a microhydro turbine and we have talked about doing something in the future.
@gillesrossignol1146
@gillesrossignol1146 11 месяцев назад
hy, i think you could put a turbin at the end off your drain pipe, i don't think you need 20 feet of elevation (is for pressure). you have alot of it at the end of the drain pipe because of the dam, if you need more pressure cut 6 inch of the pipe in the dam, you will add pressure. you should put a pressure gage at the end of your drain pipe. Look (Kris Harbour Naturel building) video. he was making 900 watt with 50 psi of pressure . Keep trying good job

I just watched your 'does my waterwheel work vid work' video, you may have upgraded since, but if you mounted a 240V inverter in a little weatherproof box beside the waterwheel, then ran 240V up to your house, I think your batteries will charge way better, your cabin looks to be about 100+ feet from your water wheel, the resistance losses over low voltage dc over 100 feet can be outrageous...enough to stop digital boards from working correctly, any modern mppt inverter will be sufficient, just make sure your battery charger is set to never exceed the minimum wattage output of your generator.....as it fluctuates with water flow/temperature.

I have been following yours water wheel. This should be a gravity only wheel without any impulse component. You do not wish to change the Jerry’s wheel and this should not be necessary. First level the flume this will give you more head and stop splash. Design buckets that are shaped to retain water as long as possible. Make buckets as wide and deep as possible. Using the head gained from leveling the flume. Deepen the tail race or raise the bearings as required, Your new panels are likely putting out voltage in the 100V range, You’re hydro should as well the voltage drop will no longer be a problem.
@paulwilson3219
@paulwilson3219 Год назад
I want to clarify my prior comment. These proposed new buckets to be screwed to the side plates of the existing wheel. This increases it's diameter and makes no changes.

Ok I just found liked and subscribed. Your water power if it could be utilized is a constant source. Now I drove semi Trucks for Decades. Those trucks are 24 or 12 volt they use a grey ghost one wire alternator that last for hundreds of thousands of miles and many hours of idling time. They use one wire and do not over charge the batterys. Also the trucks use a durable air compressor that is air governored and put out a steady 120 psi. You lose a lot in the wires transmitting the electric. If I had that setup you already have in place. I would try using a semi truck Air compressor at the water wheel. Pipe that 120 psi to the building and use a one cyl engine converted to a steam engine to power a grey ghost alternator. and use 4 12 volt batterys wired to produce the desired 12 or 24 volts. Many semi trucks have modern convenieces in the sleeper. I have a small steam engine I play with. And Its a idea Ive been thinking about for several years.

You being a RU-vidr I'm surprise you couldn't come up with a solution to your hydro generation. Yeah ok, the water wheel didn't pan out but you have that 6" pipe that has great flow in it. You could build a generator out of an old washing machine, pull a 2" or 3" line off the 6" and you'd have plenty of power to run that beautiful cabin. There are many videos on how to build that type of system and they are not that expensive to build. At any rate, you have solar now. I would look at putting heat tapes on your water pipes in your crawl space. They turn off when the temp is above a preset temp so they aren't on all the time. We use them here in the frozen north and they work great.
@robertfowler4814
@robertfowler4814 10 месяцев назад
You need to line up your water flume with the wheel your getting to much splashing and gear up the generator so the wheel can run at a slower speed so the bucket can fill up

Can you do a video about the solar installation more in depth? You know, cost breakdown, wiring, hardware, obstacles etc. Just everything solar. I would also love to see the readout, so like info about how much you can use daily without worrying about ever running out. Etc etc.

Love your waterwheel and sorry to see it hasn’t worked out… yet. Can I suggest you reach out to Kris Harbour Natural Building. Kris is an absolute legend and is currently in the process of building a waterwheel that he estimates will produce 1.5kw. I’m sure he’ll be able to offer some suggestions to get you up and running. Cheers

I honestly cannot believe after all this time and all of the suggestions that you've received from your audience, with the tons of information and resources out there that you still could not get the water wheel working? Did you even try? The vague explanation of the water wheel in this video kinda says you didn't.

I comment to promote your channel. I do not expect a reply or for what I say to make sence as the time lag from your real world to my youtube land makes anything I say months if not years tool late... Going solar... when you have a stream like that solar is insane. Personal opinion and desire is one thing math is another. A small peloton wheel at 500W is 12KW a day. To actually get 12kw in solar system in a day is going to be one hell of an array as the average is what we are talking. Finding the right people to help you at time of build seems harder than it should be.

I wish off grid living was something I knew about when I was younger. I would have definitely bought some land and built a cabin on it. I’m in Southern California, but believe it or not, there was available land at affordable prices when I was younger. I turned 64 last week and my wife turned 65 today. I’m disabled with chronic back problems, my wife is retiring in a few months, so it’s a little late for us to build something off grid, although I’d still love to do it. At this point in our lives, keeping money to live on in our retirement years is pretty important, so my wife isn’t willing to spend anything that’s not necessary. That’s why I keep a separate savings account for me so I can be in charge of buying the things we don’t need. Funny how I spend the money mostly on things for me. If I had your 50 acres, I’d build a few cabins. It’s enough land to still give everyone their privacy. If I were young, I’d probably build a little western type town and maybe even open up a small area where RV’s could park for the night. Similar to a Harvest Host or Boondocker’s Welcome. Maybe even sell trinkets in the small town, mostly consisting of facades only, but perhaps a small place to sell baked goods, fresh eggs and a few supplies folks might need. Heck, if 50 acres wasn’t enough, I’d buy more land. It would be an income stream and give me something to do in retirement. Our kids and grandkids would enjoy it too, well one daughter wouldn’t as she’s a career woman where getting the highest income is what’s important. Me, I’m a laid back guy that loves the Lord and just want to enjoy life. Your cabin looks great. I followed you guys from the beginning until you gave up the RV life, and really enjoyed your cabin build. Solar was definitely the way to go. I wish you and your family the best and pray that God continues to bless you and your beautiful family.

just found your vids, looks great. an idea for your fire, is a bit of thermodynamics, a deck and underdeck heating. you have a set of pipes that run from below the fire, then threw the fire, or around the inside of the pit, then back to under the deck. as your fire goes, it sucks up cold air, heats it up and takes it around under the deck, heating up from underneath. or have some holes in the pipes in specific areas where the chairs will be so hot air comes up under the chairs. Best solution for the dam would be to dig a deeper foundation in that corner.
