Theo and Bee gave up their busy city lifestyles in 2014 to explore alternative living, and have lived in vans and boats since then without looking back! Along with their cat Ginjey Bear they have been driving around the world in their self converted Sprinter van. However, when the global pandemic hit they began converting their abandoned stone barn in Central Portugal to turn into a wonderful tiny stone cottage. Along the way, they have rescued a playful cat called Furrnando and have a wonderful flock of Chickens!

Good wood-chopping day Theo, tailored with good realistic advice to everyone thinking of making a life change by moving abroad. Think your idea to gift wood to local seniors is a wonderful and generous idea. And another great income stream of you decide to sell wood as well. That wood mill you are hoping to get would be a great help there as well. Lots of a ideas flowing - very creative. So for every tree ou cut down, PLEASE PLEASE plant 2 trees to replace any you cut. You’re so sweet and thoughtful thinking about the elderly. I’m not sure how prideful they are in Portugal so I’d recommend bartering with them if needed. Especially, as your home alone at this time perhaps some of them can make you a meal or treats. You never know but I’m sure that would be taken even better than offering to give wood away for free and the hard-work you’ll have to put into it to get into these towns

From what I understand, it’s common practice when you have an abundance of produce to leave a gift of it on your neighbours doorsteps (neighbours who don’t have an abundance of the same crop, obviously 😅) and perhaps something similar could work? It would mean a community effort, but I did wonder about the pride aspect too. Although - something that’s become quite commonplace here in England, is to just pile whatever you’re offering outside your property with a ‘help yourself’ sign. It can be homegrown tomatoes or books your children have outgrown. I guess Theo & Bee are quite remote (?) but it’s a thought.

Theo your idea of giving wood to the elderly is a wonderful idea. A way to give kindness and care. In NZ people put bags of fruit on their yard wall for anyone to help them selves. New Yorkers put out furniture at midnight on Friday with signs of Free, take me. Get well Bea.💕

I had 20 orange trees, with help from my children, we would pack up bags and put them on our fence. A sign would be on fence, saying help me keep our orchard clean. Help yourself to a bag or 2. These are Valencia oranges which make excellent juice.

You are very right about the costs of living off grid. My solar system and batteries have been a BIG surprise. It's not a one and done. I'm on my second inverter in 9 yrs, and had to replace the entire battery bank 5 years ago. I'm in the process of buying two more lithium batteries and a different inverter ( don't buy Chinese ). Fuel costs and wear and tear on 4x4 trucks to get here and across the river have been crazy! I could go and on!

I haven't regretted it for a minute, but it is hard work looking after the land and trying to grow your own produce. But very rewarding when you cook something you've grown that caterpillars, slugs or snails haven't eaten. 😊 Love your idea of setting up a small firewood business and especially giving free wood to the elderly. In relation to firewood (Lenha), the best hard wood you can find and use in Portugal are Holm Tree (Azinho/Azinheira Tree), Cork Tree (Sobro/Sobreiro Tree) and Chestnut Tree (Castanho/Castanheiro Tree). Also Olive Tree is a hard wood but with a more open flame and it's only good for big open fireplaces. Softwood as Pine Tree and Eucalyptus are not so recommended because they will burn a lot faster and usually retain a lot of moisture. Nice gesture from you on planning to give some firewood to the "velhotes"🙏

Theo , I grew up in the country. My Dad didn’t cut wood for the winter in the fall. He would wait at the last minute. I had to carry wood to the wood box with my brother and sister. Concerning the firewood. I have some out of the box ideas. They will also give additional subjects for your very interesting video. 1. Start a project where you selecting tree and seedlings and grow them from seed (or buy seedlings) 2. Some trees can be used for firewood, others for building materials, for fire protection and against soil erosion. 3. Start with gardening (yucca, cycads, tree ferns, flowering trees etc.

But that shouldn't discourage you from doing it. Do realize what you're getting into. We did spot the easter egg in your thumbnail which leads us to say "don't put all your eggs in one basket. Having revenue streams to help during periods of high expenses is important. Theo , Harriet and I think you should start that firewood business. We have learned so much from your you doing over our own landscape. One question we would like to ask is : Do you have any information on that green utility cart? cost ? Where to purchase ? Hi Theo, your firewood business sounds good. Near to me in Canada, there was an elderly fellow I met, Merv Wilkinson, who had a wood business where he responsibly selective farmed the same land for 60 or more years. He signed it over to a preservation society to run before he died. 'Wildwood EcoForest'' on Vancouver Island. It's now a park. He studied the scandenavian eco forstry model, ended up writing a book and loved to take people on tours around his farm and talk about his land. It looks like it was never logged. Beautiful. He used sheep to keep down the underbrush...

The reason people said cut them down was in regards to the fire threat. If you don't have that potential fire risk then keeping them standing until needed is fine. It goes for the debris from the limbs as well, if they aren't cleared off then they are fuel for a potential fire in the future.

There will always be people that will exploit someones kindness, but the thought is very kind, to give away wood, but that of course will depend on how many live in your proximinity/close. A whole willage will be to much to feed with wood. There is often most elderly people in rural locations, so you have to check that out before you start to GIVE AWAY. Theo, please don’t start your chainsaw by throwing it down. One of the first safety instructions we were given in the fire brigade was to the place the saw on the ground and secure it by placing your foot through bottom of the rear handle and hold the top of the front handle. This keeps everything under control. It is critical when you work remotely and on your own, to be very strict about safety. Cut your femoral artery and you’ll bleed out before you can get help. All the best.

Giving away firewood and using the smaller branches and twigs as kindling is a brilliant idea,Theo. Might I suggest that for every ten trees that you cut down that you replant one or two? That gives some sustainability to the business. Certain trees grow faster than others, so check with the Agricultural Ministry Office to determine what would best suit your purpose. God bless and have a blessed holiday season. 😊

Free wood to the elderly is a lovely idea. In the UK there are restrictions now on log and coal burners/fire. What about a charcoal burner? That sells as well. Hope Bee doing well x

Hi Theo & Bea - love the idea of a wood business, especially if it enables you to give some to those in need in your local area. It sounds exhausting however, so perhaps suggest they bring you a plant from their garden, or a jam they make in exchange. Even something extraordinary like showing you an old photo of the area they have, or a story to tell about previous owners of your property, ie. something historic and meaningful to them! Plus it might reinforce they are still valued and contributing. I guess you don't need any eggs..... ;) Love the quality in your videos and I know that takes a huge amount of effort. I might be new to commenting, but I watch every, single, one of them and have done since your Norway trip in the van....

Saludos desde Chiapas, México. Well said Theo! I live partially off grid in the mountains here just outside of San Cristóbal, Chiapas, at 2,600 meters in elevation. I collect rainwater from my roof in a 20,000 litre cistern for washing, bathing etc., because drilling a well is ridiculously expensive here. The permit alone costs about $125,000 US! Thankfully most years there's an abundance of rain here, so collecting enough water isn't a problem. Also my house is in a clearing similar to your house, and it's also surrounded by forest. Living at 2,600 meters above sea level, means it gets below freezing quite often in winter, which also means I chop down and collect all of the dead and down wood here from the surrounding forest to heat my house and sometimes cook... So, naturally I think your idea about selling your firewood and then donating some of it to the elderly, is a grand idea. I myself am an elderly semi-retired teacher and some day when I can't chop and haul wood anymore, and possibly move back to town, I'd be delighted for someone to donate some firewood to me. From what I gather, Mexico has some of the same problems as Portugal, with many people moving here to live a cheaper life and realizing it's not so cheap after all, and in the end give up and go back to their old lives. Therefore, I think your warnings about moving to Portugal are on point. As always thank you, Theo, for sharing a bit of your life with us. Greetings to Bee, y Bendiciones!

Good idea Theo. You may need to invest in mechanical wood splitter if you don’t already have one.
