Hi, I'm running a small farm in Poland. I do have animals like horses, cows pigs and goats. I've been having horses for 20years now and I can tell you that they can be very helpful if well trained. Of course you need minimum equipment, but lots of jobs can be done much easier. I recommend primitive breeds. Polish ponies for example. They are well accustomed to cold, primitive conditions. They will live of anything. If they don't work too hard grass and hay is enough to keep them in excellent condition.
@Kate-qu2rw
@Kate-qu2rw 3 года назад
Polish ponies are the best, I must say! They're not really big and they don't look like most horse breeds we see during shows yet they're pretty strong and reaaally nice :D Hope to have my own someday!

Icelandic horses too, lovely horses. But it is pretty cold in Poland too during the winter, so i guess polish ponies will be a winn to. Masse hjerter fra Norge. Sett rundt 20 videoer av dere i kveld.. de 20 første... og dere er utrolig flinke :) . Gleder meg til fortsettelsen

Out of all of your vlogs, I think this one is the absolute best of all!!! It’s my favourite. ❤️ I will never forget the hail bail. 😂 You both are so cute together too. By the way using a very long piece of strong rope over the peak of the roof, then pulling it side to side (close to the roof line) with one person on each side of the house works like a charm!!! Back and forth until the avalanche happens all in one shot. I’ve done it a million times here on our sheds and garages. Last year we had over 400cm of snow. Best trick ever as you never have to get on the roof again shovelling or better yet falling off.

That wet, extremely heavy snow, we call slush. It takes a lot of time, energy and persistence to move it, or anything else, around it. Thankfully, this isn't an issue for us here in Northern California. Instead, we have very cold air masses that move in from Alaska during our Winters. Wet weather, we can put up with, but a bitterly cold, fierce North wind that makes even our furry animals shiver, and knocks out our electricity is a serious matter for us to contend with. Every place has its climate challenges. Nothing else quite like enjoying hot tea after chilly chores, to warm both heart and soul. Your video footage is well shot and edited. We are enjoying them all: one video at a time. Thank you, also, for your great efforts at English narration.

Nice job at completing two difficult jobs. Rest is well deserved for you two after all that. Please hang in there with making your videos. They are exceptionally great. There are only three other creators I watch with videos as good as yours. Two of the channels have over 300k and one is over 1 million subscribers. One day soon your channel will be discovered by the masses and your subscriber base will explode. You’ll be able to afford way more than just a tractor. I recommend changing your titles to something that will catch peoples attention. “Homesteading in deep snow.” “Homesteading and the runaway hay bale.” Be creative with titles and use words that are popular such as homestead/homesteading, survival/surviving, cabin, how to..., off grid, etc. You can also add exclamation (!) marks in titles to help. I wish you continued success, fun, health and happiness. Always look forward to your videos! Thank you for sharing.

Hi Folks, Kudos/Congratulations to you both for getting that hay bail moved. I need to show this video to my wife's niece so she can see what it is to work hard & to be independent. We used to be that kind of nation, but since post WW2 we are becoming lazy, with each generation becoming lazier than the previous one. This is primarily the fault of poor parental guidance. No matter how much we have, we seem to be unsatisfied. These are generalized statements as we do have exceptions; I would be stereotyping all citizen's which would be wrong. You both work very well together, & I feel that you are blessed to have a wife that works hard with/along side of you. Have a beautiful day! Illinois, U.S.A.

Moving that hay wheel will keep you both in shape. Well, all of the hard work you do does. I get what you mean by satisfying work. I feel that when I have finished with a project in my woodshop. Working around the yard was such a pleasure that I would forget to come in for dinner, When I was younger that is. When I would finish and see what a beautiful garden and yard I'd made, it made all of the hard work and sweat well worth it.

In Maine, USA we use what we call roof rakes. Picture sections of poles that you put together to make as long of a pole as you need. On the end is a shovel blade that is perpendicular to the roof. You stand on the ground and "rake" the snow off the roof every other storm or so to stay ahead of it. Keeps the ice damming on the roof to a minimum as well.

Just found your channel and I love you guys. Your skills in video editing help us understand the day to day struggle of a Nordic offgrid lifestyle but also and more importantly the peace of mind that comes after a long day of hard work. I am French Canadian from Québec. We get as much snow as you guys do, even tho I believe our winters are a bit shorter than yours. Here snow starts falling around Christmas and we usually see the end of it around mid March, unless it's a very bad year like the last one, where it started to snow early November and snowed until May. Anyway, all that to tell you that here we call the "Wet Snow" the "Sticky Snow". Hope you guys are doing well

I love watching your logs. It brings back many memories and relates to what we are doing now. We didn't try living off grid but we did build our own home on several acres, cleared land, planted a small orchard, and large garden. Built thousands of feet of stone walls and cut, split and stored 7 cord of wood every year. We raised 7 kids there and lived there for some 25 years. A sad day when we sold and moved. We are now in our 70s and building a cabin. 2 years in now and should finish this year. There is much to be said for hard work, struggling physically, emotionally and monetarily. The memories built will last a life time. And PS I love Tova's laugh. Always brings a smile. Keep going. I and I am sure many others really enjoy you taking the time to film, edit and produce these videos.

I have horses, but they are for riding/not trained for pulling. I do want work horses or mules though. There's a magazine out of the UK called Heavy Horse World that has many good books and web link addresses to sites in Europe about draft animals. Pferdestarke.de is a German/Austrian site with good information and scientific research. Also, oxem are typically more economical on small homesteads. They can eat lower quality forage than horses need when in work. Also, oxen are better in a northern climate and can overheat in the south. Oxen with a "stone boat" type of sled, and a logging arch would be very useful in your woody region.

I have seen this used in other northern climate homesteads.- throw a rope over the roof of the building, you can tie some pieces of wood to either end if you want - and one person on either end of the rope. Then run it back and forth on the width, even down the length of the roof. What happens is the rop acts like cheese wire and cuts the snow free from the roof and it all just slides off and down- saves masses of time and labour. Ill try and find a vid and link it here for you - thankyou are putting so much work into the videos- great work

I had a good laugh when the hay bale came rolling down. At first I thought you edited in the crash on purpose because you could see the camera shake visibly! Good thing Mr. Bunny is OK :).

The type of snow you are talking about is called packing snow. That is what we call it here in Canada anyway.

Teamwork! Man, that looks like really hard work! I don't think we have a name for snow when it's good for snowballs. We just describe it as wet or dry. Dry is too fluffy, wet is good for snowball fights and snowmen.

We have had some suggestions of slush and hugsnow, the swedes has like the inuits many different words for different kind of snow. Thank you for watching, /Tova
