I had no idea that I would see such attention to detail and craftmanship in this video. So cool! That was fun to watch. You're a multi-talented individual. There is a saying "It ain't braggin' if it is true." You are quite talented in numerous ways.

Thanks for the great video series. You two should be voted "Most Charming" couple on RU-vid! I'm sure all the viewers would agree that we appreciate your sharing in English. Don't worry about the "struggle" for English words, it adds to the charm! I think you both would enjoy watching these RU-vid channels: "Mr. Chickadee" , "The Outsider", and "My Self Reliance" "Mr. Chickadee" shares timber framing skills and joints such as the mortise and tenon you are working on in this video, plus cabin building off grid. "The Outsider" and "My Self Reliance" are both building cabins off grid and share similar skills. Thanks again- You are super talented as photographers, narrators and crafstmen! I am a very avid subsciber to your channel and look forward to more!

Your woodworking is superb. I love the patterns you create in the wood. You are far too modest about your work. You and Tova are two of the most talented, multi-skilled people I have come across. You can do anything. You both read such a lot too, and are always learning new skills and refining the ones you already have. It is so impressive to see this in two young people.

Fun Tip - take a plastic bottle and turn it into one long plastic strip. Use the long plastic bottle strip to wrap the handle where it cracked. It will strengthen it AND allow you to recycle plastic bottles!

Hi Mathias & Tova, My hat's off to you as usual. Always trying even if you aren't quite sure of the outcome. Another thing I admire about you is the fact that you admit when you don't know about something. There's no B.S.(bull-shit) with you & that's a breath of fresh air. Many time's here in the State's our motto is " if you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bull-shit ". I also have spent a lifetime (69yrs.) in the school of hard-knocks, but it's been a great education. Good luck to you both in your future endeavors.

I notice people w a true god given talent often have no idea they how wonderfully talented they are... because it comes so naturally w such ease to them. They don’t have to think about it. They only seem to see small mistakes. They seem to believe anyone can create what they are doing. They are unaware that there of those of us that could try and try yet NEVER be able to create what they do so simply. Our minds don’t work that way. They never will. You are one of those beautiful people, sir! The fact that you are so unaware is not due to a lack of self esteem. You are simply humble! That’s what makes you so endearing. You truly don’t know how gifted you are... you’re not boastful. Believe me, my friend...Even if we train ourselves to learn your skills, what comes so naturally to you, we would never be as skilled on our best day as you are on your worst. We just have talents in other areas. Theres a wee bit of Beethoven in everyone... we’re just not all composers! It’s what makes the world go round!

You are doing a great job with the tools you have. The reason the handle split is tat the tenon was too thin on the botom. (You call it a mortise an tenon). The way to make the tenon rount is to start off square and ten halve each side. So go to eight sided, ten 16 sided and so on...

-4 Carl, I assume it is what the English call a dibbler for planting starter plants in the early summer. If you drill a crosshole through the tenon ( the round peg thing) just above the shoulder and about twice the thickness of the saw blade, the split will most likely not happen. Look at stick chair making videos to learn to make a round tenon to size.

Many below have said what I feel; you don't give yourself enough credit - you have talents AND you try to learn new ones as you need them. In my view, as long as it works, it is a success. The tool is a bark spud, in English. Amazing details in the carvings for your chisel case - you DO know about woodworking/carving. :)

Ha ha that was funny the bleeped out curse word when the wood split. = ) Very amazing woodcarving!
@petergrice76
@petergrice76 2 года назад
The round piece you shaped on the end of your handle is called a tenon and the hole it fits into is a mortice and where the two meet is the shoulder.The method you used to shape the tenon was correct but more care is needed in its shaping. When you have achieved a snug fit drill a 5 or 6 mm.hole centrally through the tenon about 1 cm. above the shoulder then saw down your tenon into this hole but no further, the hole will prevent the handle from splitting when you drive in the wedge.

Great video! I've put on many hammer handles... because I break them because of misuse and not being able to hit the target! Lol one trick I've found to help keep from splitting them is by drilling a 1/8" hole at the base of the slot for the wedge. It does seem to help...

I think you need to re examine your self esteem Sir! You give yourself too little credit for the skills you have! Every carpenter deals with cracked projects every now and then, and you sir, have just made two very useful and also beautiful things from wood! (and then I'm not even mentioning the house yet) So, you can call yourself a carpenter, even if you're not willing to carry the title Master Carpenter yet, but once your home is finished, i think you must upgrade your title, definitely ;-) right now? Carpentry level : Awesome! :)) Oh and that strange tool.... the thing that comes to mind for me is de-barking a tree?

Mathias, you shouldn't be so hard on yourself. We all make errors during our day's woodworking. One day it can be in measuring, The next in cutting, carving. Woodworking is not an exact science, and if anyone says they don't make mistakes, then they are lying. Its all part of the process of learning. One day everything may go perfectly and the next day you're off. Its called being human. You are a bright and smart man, so learn from those mistakes. I do every day I'm in the shop. The crack may have happened for a number of reasons: the wood may have been too dry or the wedge to large. Who knows? You either use it as is or just make a new one. We, your audience is learning by watching it all. And by sharing your mistakes with us makes you human. It shows your only human like the rest of us. Some of the best woodworkers on RU-vid keep the mistakes in the video, to show what can happen and it makes the person more relatable.

Drill the appropriate size hole in a one eigth thick piece of steel sheet ( If you don't want to use a lathe.) and hammer through with a wooden mallet. Rounding one end so as to gain access to the hole. Keeping as vertical as one can using a hand. Then, if needed, rub down with a very fine sandpaper. (Oxy-paper) Obviously the wood must be as close to the size you want to fit, before going through the hole in the steel.
