A wonderful overview as always Chris! This book looks really nice as do most Absolutes, but I'm a bit hesitant to read these old school superhero stories, though you did mention that it was a light read in contrast to the usual dense tomes... In any case I'm glad too see you happy with getting another excellent item for your library and hope you enjoy it for many reads!
Thank you my friend. It is a beaut of a book! It was hard to get for a while but there are some slowly coming online for sale in preparation for volume 2 in December
Beautiful looking book. I'm with you as far as struggling a bit with 60s and 70s writing and haven't loved the early FF comics I've read for that reason. I recently picked up the Jimmy Olsen thick paperback collection and am excited to expand my Kirby reading. Great video as always.
These books came out when I was a teenager & I thought they were magnificent at the time. Kirby art was a lot more raw than it had been at Marvel as he didn`t have inkers like Joe Sinnott smoothing out the rough edges ( although Curt Swan did re-draw his Superman ). Mark Evanier smoothed out his dialogue in the Fourth World but when he returned to Marvel he did his own writing so that`s why it was different . Kirby always needed someone to dialogue for him. You`re going to make Me buy this . The pages at this size as well as the pencils are going to make Me pick this one up at some point. Good video.
That explains the difference in writing, so thanks for that info! In the sketch book you see Kirby’s superman face which is obviously better; so ridiculous rules around superman’s portrayal messing things up there. Apologies if I have cost you money now 😂 thanks for the kind words.
I was the same. And cost should factor into it as it is a well pricey book. I was lucky that this recent re-stock allowed some retailers to sell it stupidly cheap and I got it for £65 before that the cheapest I saw anywhere was £90 which put me off for ages. Just keep a look out and if the price feel right jump in it if you can. I’m certain if you but it below a certain price you could sell it on and not lose a thing…if you didn’t like it obviously.
