In this episode of ‪@nextleveloz‬ we continue to explore Central Australia , having some fun up the 4WD track to Palm Valley and beating a heatwave around the Mereenie Loop to Kings Canyon where Paula and I go our separate ways at Kings Canyon. David takes the Rim Walk and Paula checks out the King's Creek Walk.
Oh and the van gets a flat tyre and we have to repair our first tyre in nearly 30,000 km of Australia's roughest roads.
Palm Valley is gorgeous and we had a stunning Super Moon/ Blood Moon rising over the next level backdrop of our campsite.
But, boy it was hot, hot, hot. So we decided to head to the van park at Kings Canyon for some respite - and tackled the infamous Mereenie Loop.
After the heatwave passed a bit, David decided to do the Kings Canyon Rim Walk for the second time while Paula tried the more sedate Kings Creek route.
Central Australia is just stunning and loaded with endless vistas, surprising oases and its just - well, Next Level.
Welcome to Episode 44 of our Big Lap Gap Year. We're David and Paula @nextleveloz. Like many of you, we've worked hard for 40 years, but we are too young to retire. So we're taking a gap year from work, we've bought our first ever caravan and are doing a Big Lap around Australia taking in the iconic destinations of our fabulous country.

Great as always. You should be sponsored by both land rover and the Australian tourist board. Keep hem coming; can't wait for the next chapter. Your photography and video skills are brilliant.

Thanks for watching and the kind feedback. Good thing for our subscribers is that we aren’t sponsored!! We really wanted to make sure this year was a year off from work and commercial considerations and while we never set out to be a product or travel review VLOG, hopefully it also means we can call it as we see it. We really have learned on the job and trust me editing so much of our badly shot videos can be a chore 😂😉. We never set out to be professional content creators or influencers - and we aren’t - so we shoot on the go and hope that intuitively we get it. But that’s why sometimes the audio isn’t as sharp as it should be or some of the video is a bit jumpy. But it is as you see it with no rehearsing and not much do- over. That said we are proud that it’s getting better as we go and glad you enjoy them. And of course together we get to raise some money for charity! thanks again. cheers

Love love love Palm Valley, we were blown away how clean and well kept the campsite was. The rangers had the leaf blowers in the morning - big surprise. Love Kings Canyon also, next time want to try staying at the station instead of the Discovery Park

Hi. Yes, we agree - one of the not so well known gems. The rangers do such a great job at Palm Valley campground. Probably the best maintained National Park Campground we’ve been in. If it wasn’t sooo hot we would have happily extended our stay there. This was our second time at Kings Canyon. We didn’t have the van first time. So not sure we would go again given all the places we havent been to. There were mixed wiicamps reviews of the Station - although that can be fickle. Thanks for watching and the comments. Cheers

Hi. If you have the right car it’s well worth the trip into Palm Valley. Would have been rough then. Rough enough but not too bad if you take your time now. Glad it brought back some good memories. cheers

G’day G’day 😉. Parts of this wonderful episode reminded me of the stunning Flinders Ranges (including the heat) Nice camera work Paula on your Kings Canyon walk, and Dave that rim walk wow wow ❤️
@nextleveloz
@nextleveloz 8 месяцев назад
Hey G’day 😂😉. Yes I can see why that part of Finke Gorge reminds of the Flinders. It’s greener along the Finke and in Cycad Gorge etc. Unique. I felt sorry for Paula, she was doing such a great job and her camera froze. It’s a frustrating little fault with GoPros I’m afraid especially on the Volta handle. It would have been great to include a bit more of her and little less of me! 😂😉. I’ve done that rim walk twice now near or around dawn and it was gobsmacking both times. I didn’t enjoy the climb 😮‍💨😮‍💨 but once the sunrise peaked over the rim it made it worth it. thanks again.

Another great episode, hot walking though. One puncture in 30K, you lucky bugga! We have had 3 in 20K, two screws and one tyre somehow got a split in the tread area.

Thanks for watching and sorry we missed you. We love catching up with people on the road and sharing experiences and tips. It’s how we’ve picked up a lot of information from others we’ve met on the Lap. We still are surprised that anybody watched TBH. Palm Valley is reasonably well known these days but enough of the main route that not as many people go there. So it’s still a bit of a hidden gem isn’t it? You reckon it will be sad for you guys 😉😂. We don’t even want to think about it - even though we love being with family and friends at home at Christmas. We’ve still got a bit of of content and travel to share yet - so we can all focus on that good stuff for a little while to come. All the best. cheers

Hi, thanks for watching and great question. All these areas that get wedged between flooding, cold, hot means you compromise. I’d say July- August is probably the best balance and around that period is wildflower season in some central Australia regions (which is so vast that season varies a bit). Last time we visited the area (not in a van) was end of May and it was quite cold in patches. But there were Budgerigars everywhere then and not so many flocks this time. We reckon anytime from May- August or early Sep is fine. Of course that is a busier period though. This leg was early October and while the heatwave was unseasonally early it pretty much shows that you don’t want to be much later than that either. Keep in mind we aren’t exoerts (we’ve tracked that region two different ways in recent years) but if you google best time of the year to visit Uluru or similar there are a range of good guides to the seasons. Hope that helps and thanks again.

couldnt help noticing you have tow mirrors not attached to Defender mirror edge - but fixed to stem. What brand and setup is that - if you don't mind the question?

Hi, thanks for watching. No problems at all. They are Milenco mirrors and arms mounted in a 3D printed bracket from Defender3D. You can check it out at this link defender3d.co.uk/products/ols/products/tow-mirror-mounting-solution. Cheers
