The approach described in this video is the best approach for removing an office chair base because you're only striking / potentially damaging the part you are going to be replacing anyway. Another approach could be to hold onto the base leg and pound the gas cylinder where it's sticking out underneath - pounding it up and out of the base. The issue with this could be that you crush the clip on the underside of the cylinder, which would make it difficult to disassemble if you ever needed to. It is another idea, though, if needed. :)
