The King and only the King decides! 👑🏰 See this exclusive clip from Disney's #Wish and watch it only in theaters November 22. ✨
ABOUT THE MOVIE
Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Wish” is an all-new musical-comedy welcoming audiences to the magical kingdom of Rosas, where Asha, a sharp-witted idealist, makes a wish so powerful that it is answered by a cosmic force-a little ball of boundless energy called Star. Together, Asha and Star confront a most formidable foe-the ruler of Rosas, King Magnifico-to save her community and prove that when the will of one courageous human connects with the magic of the stars, wondrous things can happen. Featuring the voices of Academy Award®-winning actor Ariana DeBose as Asha, Chris Pine as Magnifico, and Alan Tudyk as Asha’s favorite goat, Valentino, the film is helmed by Oscar®-winning director Chris Buck (“Frozen,” “Frozen 2”) and Fawn Veerasunthorn (“Raya and the Last Dragon”), and produced by Peter Del Vecho (“Frozen,” “Frozen 2”) and Juan Pablo Reyes Lancaster Jones (“Encanto”). Jennifer Lee (“Frozen,” “Frozen 2”) executive produces-Lee and Allison Moore (“Night Sky,” “Manhunt”) are writers on the project. With original songs by Grammy®-nominated singer/songwriter Julia Michaels and Grammy-winning producer/songwriter/musician Benjamin Rice, plus score by composer Dave Metzger, “Wish” opens only in theaters on Nov. 22, 2023.

Magnifico said that people come to him because “they know” they can’t make their wishes come true. But these people are coming to Rosas with the hope of having it come true. Because they honestly think they can’t do it themselves. And what if some of them have extremely impossible wishes? That can’t be granted without magic? All the people of Rosas ever thought they knew was that they can’t make their own wish come true. That it’s always the King who is only able to do it. Yet he rejects most of them. And Asha is right about one thing. If he won’t grant them. Why not just give them back? Giving back their wish won’t grant it. It will return what was taken away. There is no reason to keep them in the castle.

It was definitely edited. The trailer had Asha jump straight to "they deserve more..." just from knowing some wishes won't be granted. Now this is how a conversation between a hero and villain should be. Both Asha and King Magnifico have very valid points, but both are flawed in a way. ‘People give me their wishes because they don’t believe they can accomplish them on their own’ is actually an insanely good rebuttal to Asha’s argument. The people of Rosas get to choose ONE wish, why would anyone waste it on something like ‘sailing’ or ‘having a family’ or ‘writing a song’? Clearly they think a 1/1000 shot at instant gratification is a better deal than just putting in a bit of effort Then Asha could reply that they have been CONDITIONED not to believe in themselves by the system Magnifico created and actually demonstrate an iota of intelligence
@nicoleisgoddess

@user-yc5bt1fl6j

The only way that last argument would make sense is if he actually grants all wishes. Otherwise, as you said, only very few people would actually get conditioned because A. No one banks on a that small of a chance, and B. If not, then this would be an issue everywhere even irl, not just in that kingdom. People getting things granted without working for it is already a thing, whether that be through lotteries, or happenstance, but that doesn't really affect whether or not people pursue they're dreams.
@jesswahyudi7652
@jesswahyudi7652 16 дней назад
@@user-yc5bt1fl6j I agree with you to a certain extent, but in your point A I have a comment to make: in Asha’s song about Rosas, where she’s selling the idea of the kingdom to outsiders, the kingdom is painted as a place where wishes DO come true, and they’re not necessarily told the tiny chance, and clearly there are people in the kingdom who do believe that because they gave their wish, and king Magnifico has the power, that their wish will come true because of it. It’s an ideal, yes, but it’s still unfortunately miscommunicated
@Gemnist98
@Gemnist98 6 месяцев назад
I really like that they make Magnifico’s ideology genuinely flawed. He wants to help people with their problems while understanding the importance of self-reliance. However, his solution is to take that initial desire away from people, cutting them off from their own humanity, as if having that desire made them weak in the first place. Wishes, however, don’t do that. They are the very motivation behind people’s actions.
@carsfan1995
@carsfan1995 6 месяцев назад
No. He’s just a vain, entitled person. He sees himself as a benevolent king making his subjects happy when he is only making them complacent and ignorant. Sometimes, villains don’t have to be morally grey. His ideology is that of a control freak who thinks himself a god and thus looks at everyone like a child. Morality isn’t necessarily grey. Neither does that make it mature. Complacency is like depression and why it’s hard to get out of it. It takes effort to get out of something that you are comfortable, but not necessarily happy. The people of his kingdom are complacent, but because they assume he will grant their wish. They don’t realize they could potentially make their wish come true themselves because they believe someone will help them. Depression is a state in which you aren’t just sad, but you don’t want to do anything. You lie in bed for five, feel afraid to get out of it, can’t take a shower, and isolated yourself from others while thinking you suck. It takes works to get out of a depressive state, it takes work to get out of an unhealthy state of mind because it’s comfortable. It’s routine and thus comforting and thus takes effort to get out.

@carsfan1995 1. Are you calling Magnifico's ideology black and white? I'm quite fond of the Gray-and-Grey Morality trope, mainly because it sounds catchy. 2. Complacency is often a person's downfall. How dangerous do you think complacency is in general? Do you think Rosas needs to be told off for their complacency? 3. For the first paragraph, are you saying the people's infatuation with Magnifico for his good looks and power is hindering their common sense?

While it is a very fictitious setting simply designed to justify the king being a villain, it still kind of does make sense. If you think you can do it then you should just do it instead of relying on magic. Things that are easily earned tend to get forgotten At the same time, people’s incapability to reach their dream causes misery. Many philosohers have pointed this out While obliviating the unreachable wishes has its own point, all the king really had to do was to notify his subjects that once they give him their wishes, they are forfeit of their chances of trying it out on their own. This way the king becomes totally immune to any moral accusations

@1993digifan

That is close to something that I'm guessing happens based on trailers, interviews, and the book versions. Simon wants to be knight so to capture Asha, Magnifico makes him a knight but the magic used to do that is green and the magic that was used to give a woman her Wish earlier in the movie was red, possibly hinting at some sort of taint to the Wish.

The people criticizing it are from two "zones" as I see it: The first zone are those in the business/movie/streaming industry. It behooves the streaming services that Disney continues to fail so more people will stop watching Disney movies which might lead them to turn to streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, appletv+, Paramount, etc. and tempt them into watching something like a Netflix made movie that would, if made by a big movie company, would cost audiences a fortune to see the movie in a theatre. (Think about how high ticket prices and concession food prices are..Ouch!!!) Disney fails continually=sinks deeper into debt=files for bankruptcy. And it can happen. NO company is exempt from becoming bankrupt. And that would benefit many industry insiders and their clients. This is a business that thrives on money. If Disney went bankrupt and had to give up everything and I mean EVERYTHING, can you imagine the bidding war that would take place between movie studios, business and such? Think on that one. As for the second zone, that is filled with some people who actually get sponsorship from certain companies with links to other businesses who aim is to bring certain people down, to destroy reputations and yes, to get people to not see particular movies. And some of ya'll can scream "Where's your proof?" Or "You're full of it? Or even " That doesn't happen." How stupid are you? It happens. Use your head. Dirty dealings are done in many job sectors. What would make you think it wouldn't happen in Hollywood? Heeellloooooo!!!!! Now these people who get these sponsorships are the mouthpieces for these companies and boy do they do their job. All over the internet you see these different folks on RU-vid trashing "Wish" because it's animation is off, it's pushing "woke" agenda, which is a laugh considering NO one has seen the whole movie so shut the hell up and other b.s. excuses. First off, there's nothing wrong with the animation. They've gone back to the 2D style they used I hits like "The Little Mermaid," "The Lion King," and "Aladdin." It's called "honoring the past which these fools know nothing about. As for the rest of the trolls, they just hate on Disney because they hate Disney! And they've got nothing else better to do. Do yourselves a favor my friends: Don't watch these vlogs. It's a bunch of propagandist b.s. so these RU-vidrs can get their money/sponsorship along with more views and subscribers. I've looked at other comment threads from the different sites where the trailer for " Wish" has been shown and most of the response has been extremely positive. At the end of the day, WE are the ones who count, the ones who will see the movie, not a bunch of haters.

They likely believed they didn't miss their Wish because they knew it was with Magnifico and that it would be granted in time they just have to be patient. After all Magnifico is their "beloved King", he wouldn't lie or withhold information from them, right? Like how all the governments are absolutely 100% transparent with their people about everything that involves them, right. In "This Wish" Asha says "If I could show them everything I've seen/Open their eyes to all the lies, then/Would they change their minds like I did?", makes it clear that there is more than one lie Magnifico is telling the people which would match the idea that they don't know they will forget nor do they know that he will never give back the wishes that he refuses to grant.

We don't know for sure yet. It may sound like he's being greedy and power hungry, but he does make some terrifyingly valid points. Keep in mind that the movie's sole purpose for existing was to celebrate Disney's 100th anniversary. There have been some problems with that if you're a certain way (beautiful looking, white, and conforms to society's expectations), your wish will come true without having to put up all the effort. I think Starkid's Twisted explained this notion perfectly about how people really should be more mindful of the wishes they make. What we're seeing here is the perfect balance of a classic villain and a three-dimensional character with valid motives based on the facts presented to us.

The full context makes a lot more sense in why he is the villain. He's not being criticized for not granting the wishes. He's being criticized for not giving his people the Choice to pursue their dreams. For hording them (probably for his own powers). Even if they choose not to because its too hard or too unfair, they deserve to knowingly make those choices. If I wanted to be a great chef and gave up because I was horrible at cooking and its too hard, that's my choice to make. Meanwhile, Magnifico here thinks he deserves to make their choices for them. Honestly, that's why I disagree with people saying that Disney heroines have an "adorkable problem". So many people who are sick of this trope seem to be treating most of the characters that are like this like they're one dimensional childish morons, when the entire point to most of them is that in spite of their quirks and having a different wiring of their brains, they do have a mature, smart side to them and they just have a hard time using it. And by the end of their journeys, they do grow as people and become smarter and more mature, while still accepting their quirks and using them to their advantage. This is the outline for the story of Rapunzel. It's the outline for the story of Judy Hopps. Mirabel, Moana, Luz, Marcy, Anne, Molly, etc. Would it be nice if we got a main Disney character who is high strung like Tiana? Or selfish like Kuzco? Sure. But I'd argue that being quirky comes in all shapes and sizes, and I'm excited to see how this underdog grows throughout her story.

I think Asha and her friends will end up inspiring the people of the kingdom to pursue their dreams on their own. It would actually be quite a beautiful, mature message - a magical wish can transform you into the person you want to be but at the same time, that isn’t really you, it’s an artificial version of you, essentially. I think part of the beauty of having your wish come true is the journey you go on that leads to that; the little bursts of pride and satisfaction when you get something right, learning from your mistakes and, eventually, being able to look back on the path you took and acknowledging that while it wasn’t easy getting there, you’re happy with the destination you’ve arrived at. On the other side of the coin, if you work and work and work and put all your energy into something you’re not actually passionate about, you risk ending up full of bitterness and regret.

That's actually a really good point that I haven't thought about before. I thought they were trying to cover Asha's bases with that line so that she didn't sound unreasonable but even that's not good enough. Magnifico should have come up with this as a rebuttal: "Asha, if I were to give back every wish that I decided not to grant and they turned out to be dangerous wishes that I needed to stop, then I would have no time to perform my duties as king." While he's saying this perhaps he can use magical imagery of a mallet whacking one mole, then another, before they start multiplying exponentially and the mallet can't keep up. Demonstrating why it's best to keep the wishes that turn out to be dangerous as a preventative measure instead of reacting to all of the fires he'd be forced to put out on an ad hoc basis.

I just watched the movie a few days ago and I believe this part of the movie would've been improved tremendously if *SPOILERS* the wish granting ceremony was placed in between the "At All Costs" song number and this argument scene. Picture this, Asha finds her grandfather's wish and King Magnifico examines it but instead of immediately rejecting the wish out of hand decides to play coy, not giving a direct answer and says "Tell you what Asha, how about I give you a front row seat to my next wish granting ceremony. You get to share a spot next to my wife, the queen! What do you say?" Then Asha is overjoyed and maybe her "adorkable" traits have a reason to exist here when she stammers a response "I-I-I would be honored, Magnifico-Sir-King! *clumsily curtseys* Thank you!" Then Magnifico chuckles and says "Don't mention it, it's my pleasure. Just sit back, relax and enjoy the show." He gives a little wink and walks away with the wish in hand, leaving Asha with the impression that he very well could grant her grandfather's wish. Maybe have the camera show her looking excited but also with a hint of uncertainty as to what will happen next. Then the wish granting ceremony happens and all seems well, Asha is sitting next to Queen Amaya and her grandfather is with her other buddies in the crowd as seen in the film, then Magnifico takes wishes from the two people who offer them to him just like in the movie. This is Asha's first real hint that something's not quite right, and she gives a puzzled expression in response. Then we get to the actual wish granting part and Asha is excited again. *Drumrolls* "And the next person to have their wish granted is... this lady towards the front!" It's the person who wants to be the best seamstress just like in the movie who shouts "MEEE!!" This is a smack across the face to Asha and her grandfather and after the scene ends, Asha nervously returns to the chamber, where Magnifico is busy with his potions, to ask about the status of her grandfather's wish. Then Magnifico starts telling her about the wish being too vague just like in the movie which then leads to this argument scene. He could even throw in a line "I said I would give you a front row seat to my wish granting ceremony, and I did, but I never said I would grant your grandfather's wish, did I?" Perhaps he could flash a devious smile and Asha looks shocked by this. I think this would help flesh out King Magnifico's manipulative skills just by improving the pacing.

People in previous teasers were all saying that Magnifico was right, not all wishes should be granted and how is he the bad guy? I was like "You know there's more to it than that, right?" There's plenty of hints throughout the clips and that could never be his main trait, or they would have no storyline. * *whishing someone was with me so I could "yell" at them all this and release all the frustation it's caused on me* * * This got longer than I thought, sorry. I just had to get it all out of me 😅

@w.j.c.729
@w.j.c.729 6 месяцев назад
Alright I'll bite. IMO, this clip doesn't make Magnifico evil. It's very debatable whether what Magnifico is doing is actually wrong at all. And even if it is wrong, doing one wrong thing like Magnifico is doing here doesn't automatically make someone villainous. Also, this world-building is starting to become very convoluted: So the King can take wishes, but with one (very, very arbitrary) catch - that person forgets whatever they wished for. The King can choose which wishes to grant, and this King (Magnifico) happens to grant only a small amount of wishes. (I still struggle to find how this is bad? If the people give Magnifico their wishes, and they know with full disclosure that they will lose their memory, Magnifico has no real obligation to grant their wishes. I also wonder if the movie will explore what kinds of wishes the people have, if they mostly are good or bad wishes.) But, for some reason, a star can fall out of the sky and automatically grant the wishes of anyone without any drawbacks or catches (seemingly). The reason I say this is convoluted is because this world-building of how granting wishes works is completely arbitrary and bad writing. I am struggling to find how this situation reflects the real world at all. Unless this movie is a very subtle critique of the concept of an all powerful, seemingly benevolent God. It's almost like this movie is pushing "The Problem of Evil" or "Divine Hiddenness" arguments against the existence of an all powerful, all loving God.
@mariamendes8343
@mariamendes8343 6 месяцев назад
@@w.j.c.729 the thing is they don't know they will lose their memories, that's what Asha said. He is removing their option of choice and removing a part of their identity, since it's our goals and wishes for life that define us. That's what I understood from it, anyway. Maybe it's wrong.
@vassiliapolychronaki1631
@vassiliapolychronaki1631 5 месяцев назад
@@mariamendes8343 They know that they will be losing their memories but they don't know that they will be feeling empty or incomplete afterwards and that Magnifico keeps most of the wishes for himself and only grants wishes that will be beneficial for the kingdom and most importantly for securing his position as king. Some wishes are ruled out from the very beginning just because Magnifico interprets them in certain ways regardless of what the owner of the wish intended. He also does it because in that way he removes part of their souls and prevents them from being rebellious.

I think people immediately shooting Magnifico down need to stop and think. There really isn't much difference between him and a lot of the classic villains, and in a way he's a more complex one because the story gives enough hints to know he wasn't always like that. He founded Rosas with good intentions, but over time his mindset changed as power went to his head and he found more excuses to justify making decisions that benefited him more than the people. As another wise villain once said, madness is like gravity... all it takes is a little push. What happened with Asha was Magnifico's little push. And that darkness already growing in him, the black magic latched right on, multiplied and it was downhill even faster from there.
@Disneyfan82

If you ask me, King Magnifico is really Bob Iger in this form, picking wishes he wants best only for himself and viewing others as PROBLEMATIC as he does with the classics, willing to erase and destroy them at all costs.

They CAN'T go and make their dreams come true since as young as 18 they given him their Wish, lose their memory of what their Wish was, so they can NEVER NOT rely on him to make their Wishes come true since he took them as well as everything related to it and refuses to give back their Wish so that they COULD try making their Wish come true themselves.

He did not. Magnifico said that he thinks the people of Rosas think they knew that can’t make their wish come true. And that they give it to him willingly, and then he makes them forget their worries. And that doesn’t answer the question. The people of Rosas go to him, because they truly believe they can’t make their own wish come true. All they’ve ever known was that he was their biggest hope. So he just didn’t even answer the question. Probably trying to distract her.
