Some of the most sublime treats of Jazzfest [besides Prejean's Pheasant, Quail Andouille Gumbo] are the acts that come on during the first three or four hours of each day that you may have never heard before, but they knock you out!! I spend very little time at the big stages, but hang out mostly at Fai-Do-Do, Economy Hall Tent [catch Treme Brass Band], the Blues tent, Gospel Tent, Jazz & Heitage Stage, Lagniappe stage, the 'OZ Jazz Tent and if I want to chill - the Allison Miner Interviews.
I so agree with the person who stated best announcement video ever - the marketing person who put this together is GENIUS! Listing the line-up on famous landmarks and all over the city - so cool! love the wall at Lafittes!! I can't wait for my 6th Jazz Fest, as Dorothy said.....there's no place like home, there's no place like NOLA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This good to know. I only wish JazzFest would partner again with NPR Music to stream some of the performances. I was great for so many year. And the three years that AXS.tv aired three days worth was fabulous. There is no loss of ticket sales and many can't get to NOLA. PLEASE consider it this year. PLEASE!
Hey, HeyFreethinker, It's the Jazz and Heritage fest, there is plenty of Jazz but, it's mainly a celebration of the music and heritage of and influenced by New Orleans. Which all American music is. These big name acts are really what the powers that be use to get new people to the event. It's the acts that you've never heard of that will blow your mind. I can tell by your comment that you've never been there. Go sometime and see if you don't change your tune, so to speak.
There's an article in one of last weeks Times Picayunes about Aaron having to leave the band because the stress of performing was getting to be too much for his 72 year old vocal cords. However he will be closing on one of the stage with what will be a great set. I haven't missed a day at Jazzfest this century. Got my WWOZ brass pass already.
You can see jazz at any given night, any day of the year in New Orleans. And you can see jazz at lots and lots of smaller stages throughout the entire two weeks. "Real" jazz isn't going to draw huge crowds that stimulate the NOLA economy through flights, hotels, restaurant reservations, etc. There is no reason to complain about this. Plus, the massive crowds will be at the headliners stage anyways, so more room for you.
This video is 1 of the reasons ticket sales are going up.. not to mention the gear being brought to the shows, digital consoles, lighting rigs alone upwards of 1 mil worth of gear.. stuff that just wasnt out back then..

Hey there's a bright side after Jazz Fess a lot of those musicians will have 300.00 in their pockets...and the "Choctaws" (Old ruling class of New Orleans) will have millions! I love the City Of New Orleans. The line up is KILLER. The Jazz and Heritage Festival is one of the best (if not THE best) festivals in the country. I have to wonder though - what do Fleetwood Mac, Hall and Oats, Dave Mathews or Widespread Panic (who I LOVE btw) have to do with New Orleans Jazz and/or Heritage? Maybe I missed them, but I didn't see Wild Magnolias or CJ Chenier or Buckwheat Zydeco or Dirty Dozen. Just sayin, not hatin'. Blessings to all the wonderful people of NOLA!!
Jazz Fest is a huge music festival and its much more than "pure" jazz - whatever that means. The only minus to the big names is that the price of the tickets gone way up. I have ticket stubs from 1999 where it was 15.00. Don't get me started about $5.00 bottle water. Its always wonderful but with it getting so expensive its starting to be a party for the 1% only.
Maroon 5 is an unusual choice for Jazz Fest because of its pop roots, but I have a feeling live they may put on a decent set. The spotlights: Fleetwood Mac, Marcia Ball, the Mavericks (the last two why my wife decided to come with me) Black Keys (why I wanted to go), and Clarence Frogman Henry and the R&B legends. This is a very strong lineup, and don't be surprised if a few more join later in...
Little Wayne has performed at Jazzfest [He wasn't very good.], There's plenty of jazz at Jazzfest and once you leave "Da Fairgrounds" and hit the night shows, the jazz really starts flowin' Hopefully there will be another tribute to James Booker at the Maple Leaf - don't miss it if you come. There's not enough space to fully respond to your complaints, but if you come, you'll pass a good time!
For all those confused by the name "Jazz Fest", it's a very clever way to filter out people who wouldn't enjoy what goes on at the absolute most amazing MUSIC festival any place one earth.
Not the best lineup but still pretty stellar! My only gripe would be why aren't the Neville's closing jazzfest (they are playing the first Sunday) like they've always done in the past (except for 2 years following Katrina). I'll be there for my 13th straight year. Wouldn't dream of missing it no matter what the lineup or who closes the fest!
OMG, another fabulously-genius line up for this year, WOW!!! No to start packing, sell off all my useless shit and get moving to NOLA for the festival to beat all and settle in... for the duration. Why did I ever leave in the first place?? Get with me if your a first timer, I can help you navigate the entire experience. Been going since 1976! Cheers! great video by the way too...
I remember when the big act at the Fess was Mahalia Jackson or Ironing Board Sam on a cherry picker or James Carol Booker not Simon and Garfunkel and Jimmy Buffet! :-(

"jazzfest" is just the name that stuck because it's New Orleans. the birthplace of jazz music. But Jazzfest, like an festival, is allowed to have acts other than just jazz acts" Lighten up. Don't you think the folks running the jazzfest realize not all the acts are jazz?
Freethinker- have you ever been to New Orleans or Jazzfest??? Clearly not. The festival has been known for its mainstream acts for over 20 years. Do a little research before you gripe. This is a solid lineup.

This lineup is ridiculous. Half of it not even resembling its namesake. Fleetwood Mac? Maroon 5? Phoenix? Some of them sound interesting if they're pairings (WP and Willie Nelson has potential) but otherwise, WTF? The actual jazz acts (Stanley Clarke, Wayne Shorter, etc.) are sandwiched at the end. Stupid. (I'd still go tho...lol)
