"Samus, don't fight Ravenbeak. He so cool and has an 8 pack that you can grind meat on, and also has 20 million subs on Twitch. You stand no chance." -Adam apparently
Well ackschually Ravenbeak only impersonated Adam in that last radio room. The rest of the time it was real Adam. No way Ravenbeak would advise Samus to get armed to the teeth for the final fight.
@@one_step_sideways It was Raven Beak ever since he knocked Sami’s out during their fight. Notice how before they land on the planet, Adam calls Samus “Lady”. That is his typical name for her. He used it all throughout Fusion. After she gets knocked out, “Adam” never calls her that again. Plus, Raven Beak wanted Samus at maximum combat potential. He was too arrogant to think she could beat him, and he wanted to make her the ultimate weapon.
@@theonegoldengryphon You’re mostly correct. Adam doesn’t actually refer to Samus as “Lady” until the end of Fusion, by which point she accidentally refers to him as Adam for the first time out loud. Unbeknownst to her, she has deduced the identity of his A.I.. It is only at this point that he refers to her as “Lady”. But yeah, from the opening of Dread, it’s clear that he’s become accustomed to using her nickname, and we can easily infer that the “Adam” in communication with you throughout the game is indeed Ravenbeak, as he doesn’t use her nickname even once, (but you knew that.)
@@Cobaltios I mean considering how the Metroids are extinct, Samus is thus the only one to have Metroid DNA. Therefore she is the only Metroid to exist and ever will exist unless they clone more Metroids (which considering the Old Federation Army's BSL station was destroyed which housed the OFA's Metroid Clones; I doubt it unless they made many separate samples.)
@@valentds you see samus land on the same planet or star system as you... you should prol just pack it and run. cuz chances are shit is about to be real, and that realy quick
As someone who generally thinks watching Twitch is boring, watching Max on Twitch play Super Metroid fully blind, and then go straight into Dread is one of the most entertaining things i've had the pleasure of watching.
"Power is everything" Yes. Power is indeed everything. And you just pissed off the most powerful metroid in the universe, then proceeded to let your guard down. Take this L my dude.
The Experiment No. Z-57 boss is cool because remember when you entered a dark area and in the back ground you can see a giant monster being tested on. Well when the X parasites escaped and you return to this room, the creature is no longer there, some of the mechanical arms are broken. This is that creature you fight in Cataris. So cool!
Environmental storytelling at it's best as Metroid is known for. Doesn't need to hit you over the head with it, just leave the pieces and let you put it together. Like I figured out that the EMMIE'S will give me my skills after seeing the second one by how it got small. The ADAM said all should have this ability and thought, "Then why didn't the first real one?" Then I looked back and realized that the first one can't do that because it has a wider then standard face plate. Such an unnecessary detail but combines the gameplay and the story. I still don't like the EMMIE'S, as my least favorite gimic in videogames is the unstoppable enemy trope. But they were used for the story well.
@@TheScribe1.0 I think they're similar species to each other but not exactly the same. Z-57 has WAY more arms than Corpius, and doesn't have as deadly a tail. So it's like . . . one's a horse, and the other's an antelope. They are at the end of the day, related species but distant ones.
@@mr.pockets8523 Adam was perfectly fine in Fusion. Where Max, and literally everyone else, should hate Adam in is in Other M and I would hope with everything I have that Max just avoid that one like the damn plague
Reminded me of my first fight against Ganon in A Link To The Past, it is so cool that Metroid finally looks as cool as this, does Samus the badass Aran justice
Raven Beak is definitely my favorite boss fight in the entire game, and considering Mother Brain at the end of episode 3 (as well as Prime itself), that's saying something!
Her screaming in rage gave me the same feeling when Snake at the end of MGS4 collapses when he gets to the end of that "microwave" hallway, can totally feel the pain, exasperation, and anger. 👍🏿👍🏿
Of COURSE Max is gonna become a "Metroid Weeb." He loves ALIENS for God's sake! I'm so happy at how much love Dread has been getting all over the internet. I really hope this makes it sort of a mainstream Nintendo franchise. Maybe Dread will do for Metroid what Awakening did for Fire Emblem. Oh god now people are gonna complain about a ton of Metroid characters in the next Smash game if that ever exists. Edit: HOLY SHIT HE ACTUALLY GOT THE MISSILE+ TANK IN FERENIA! That thing is EASILY the worst part about going for 100%. F*CK THAT TANK!
I think Nintendo really does hope that Dread will push the franchise into an A tier IP like Fire Emblem became. I think that's why the marketing was pushed hard for this game as well.
The great irony is that liking Metroid is pretty un-weeby: Metroid has very consistently been more popular outside of Japan than in it. So much so that Ridley is called "Captain America" by some of the Japanese because the American fans of Metroid wanted him in Smash so bad. So, don't worry Max. Liking FF7 makes you a weeb!
I mean hasn't samus been drawn as anime girl sense fusion in her zero suit art. I know people don't like to think of nintendo art as anime but they always tend to follow the anime trends of the time but they do it in a stylized way that stands out
@@cheeseycake1 well it depends, what do you consider to be an anime girl. To me the traits I often associate with anime girls are the generic big-eyes small-nose no-lips pointy-chin characters. And I don’t think Samus is drawn with any of those characteristics, if anything, she’s one of the most anatomically accurate Nintendo characters. And what even is anime anyways? It’s really just a word with no objective definition. Any cartoonish character no matter how different their art styles are will be considered anime given that they are made by Japanese people.
@@see.eye.2361 I'd consider castlevania more realistic anime and that wasn't even from Japan. It's just more like an art style now that's not limited to Japan making it
I think this game nails a perfect balance of the exploration and freedom of Super and the narrative and atmosphere of Fusion. this is the new gold standard for Metroid gameplay EASILY my new favorite!
Amen to that. Definitely the gold standard of the 2D series gameplay going forward. Heck, I would be surprised if many things and quality-of-life improvements in Dread will be implemented into Metroid Prime 4.
"Was she raised by birds?" Shortest answer is yes. Somewhat longer answer: her and her father and mother on a colony. Chozo comes. Accidentally allowed space pirates to follow them lead by Ridley. Ridley kills mama and papa Aran. Chozo feels bad. Raise Samus.
@@FailingDuke64 I mean . . . no because the "apes" in this case were super intelligent beings from a more advanced civilization than humans. It's more like Stranger in a Strange Land, if you want to go for literary comparisons, and that just makes me assume that Samus probably had several years of interacting with people that were really, really weird.
"a friend of mine saw raven beak in the shower and said raven beak is ripped samus, raven beak is absolutely shredded, ravenbeak has an 8 pack samus" - adam
Yeah, as she was fading out I was suddenly worried they were gonna have Quiet Robe X show up and interrupt and then Samus went Super Saiyan on RB. It was glorious!
Well I mean it's sorta half true. Samus isn't some doomguy with plot bullshit that's just "le angry xD" There's at least some sense of explanation. In this case it's that as Samus is giving out the metroid DNA decides to fully awaken and absorb Raven Beaks energy as a Mawkin. It's not Shakespeare but I feel like just saying "too angry to die" isn't giving enough credit to the worldbuilding and also Samus as a character. Her sensibilities and backstory culminate in this in a great way that makes sense as a fan of the mainline story arc and also gives her a very sensible reason for her reaction in the ending that's more interesting than just "she's angry"
(Side note: I think doomguy's story works for his game well but I think Samus as a character deserves a bit more than that simplicity and laziness. Just cus a previous attempt at a story went to the shitter doesn't mean Samus should just be Doom Girl from now on. She's still a character with a past that deserves more credit than Mad And Badass)
I had the dumbest grin on my face from the title alone, and that ending just made it keep on going. I bid you a humble and very warm welcome to the Metroid fan community 😊
This game exceeded my already high expectations. I didn't think it would be able to stand next to Super Metroid, but it does and might even exceed it. MercurySteam absolutely nailed this game. Just wait until you go back and start learning sequence breaks and speedrunning and every run is just as satisfying as the last. I'm extremely excited for the future of the Metroid series.
Metroid Dread could definitely be Game of the Year winner at The Game Awards. It was the biggest surprise game this year and the best selling game and the best 2D Metroid ever.
It's also got good hype all around it. Like, there's really nothing bad that can be said about the game itself and the few people who try, like David Jaffe, basically cause everyone to scratch their heads as to how they could reason themselves into such a position.
Raven Beak is probably my favorite boss in the entire series. Like yeah, there are more iconic bosses because duh, they've been around longer, but legit that was the most fun I've ever had learning a boss fight in a Metroid game. I gladly died many times practicing and learning his moves, and by the end my adrenaline was pumping HARD.
I'd put it at #1 final boss of a Metroid game. Not only is the fight fun, the boss also has presence throughout the game, especially when you realize that it was him the whoel time and not ADAM talking to you (which is forshadowed right from the start because ADAM doesn't call her "lady" after landing on the planet). #2 I'd say Metroid Prime. It was creepy and made you utilize your whole arsenal.
@@AndresLionheart Raven beak is one of the prime examples of what I consider to be a perfect final boss fight. He's badass & intimidating, his presence shadows you throughout the story, he's clever in his maniacally evil ambitions, and the actual fight is intense and difficult but fair. Getting that final hit in after a bunch of failed attempts was an absolute rush of adrenaline.
I allways considered Mario, Zelda and Metroid to be the holy triforce of nintendo. All of them greatly influential, basically creating their own super succesful genres. It is just kind of sad that Metroid is far less popular with the public, it has allways been a darling among developers and critics, but kind of niche elsewhere. I am so glad Metroid Dread and its hype is generating new fans, hopefully it continues to sell well because it deserves it.
Hearing Max and other people who have played this game gush about Metroid fills me up with so much joy. It feels like we're back in an era of the early 2000's when Fusion and Prime 1 came out and people are getting interested in Metroid again. I only hope the love for this series continues and Nintendo starts to take notice of it.
The other wholesome thing at least for me, its that I was so suprised to see at least 90% of credits spanish and latino names on the credits. So awesome!
It makes me so happy to hear how much he loves Dread, especially as a newcomer to the series. After Adam Sessler’s review I was worried that maybe the Metroid franchise is a little too niche for most newcomers, but I think it just comes down to personal taste. Metroid Dread is an objectively good game. While it may not be for everyone, it’s one of my all time favorites.
The final boss feels like a fighting game. I feel like they could make a really cool fighting game using these really unique mechanics and movements. It wouldn't be about locking people in hitstun for long combos. In fact, the amount of hitstun would be minimal. It would just be about shooting stuff all over the place in various unique ways for each character and having ways to minimize the damage your opponent does to you.
Honestly at this point, a missile combat (as opposed to melee combat) focused 2D fighting game might be one of the few ways left to innovate in that space. I say 2D because in the 3D space that'd just be an FPS
It wouldn't have to be first person just because it's 3D. There ARE 3D fighting games that exist. But, even if we imagine some absurdly impressive game developers having the insane ability to make a missile-based 3D fighter work, the controls would end up feeling like Other M. And those controls were just awful.
its gonna sound like a weird comparison to make given that its metroid we're talking about, but raven beak really plays like one of the later hollow knight bosses
Seeing Max turn into a Metroid fan is so awesome. People really need to open their eyes more to this series. I would love to see him do a playthrough of the prime trilogy. My advice is to play it on veteran mode. The prime trilogy is one of the best trilogies and some of the highest rated games of all time. A true masterpiece everyone should experience.
That's certainly saying something given the series history. I'm not sure I have a favorite ending but I have no qualms with someone calling this the best
@@Oh-Ben all the hate surrounding Other M is ridiculous, it's still very fun to play and it fills some interesting plot holes between Super and Fusion, it's just the kind of dumb hate Metal Gear 2 used to get
@@shinesparker1169 What you call "Garbage" is subjective, also how curious you call it "fanfic" since it's directed by Sakamoto just like every other Metroid, all the hate is unjustified, or at the very least, missdirected
@@Lunaria.Praesentia I call it fanfic because the story sucks, just like one. Compare it to any other Metroid game instead of Metal Gear and tell me it's good. Turning Samus into an insecure girl struggling with her feelings for her commander and having the big plot twist, being "hey guys, it's Mother Brain again." Yeah, what a good game...
As a long, long time Metroid fan as a kid since the mid-late 90s, watching Max play Super Metroid about a month ago for the very first time and fall in love with it was truly a wonderful experience. Watching Max play and experience Dread as the game came out and seeing how much he was enjoying himself and finally acknowledging how incredible this franchise really is warmed my heart... I cannot imagine what will happen when he touches Metroid Prime....... _Can't wait_
Given how much he talked about liking the atmosphere and complained about Super's controls, I think he's really gonna love ZM and Fusion. Both are really well-made and have ultra-tight controls.
Man this entire playthrough was fucking awesome. Brought back all the joy for me of playing this for the first time. I’m honestly very impressed with how quickly you worked out Raven Beak as well! I watched this after watching your hades play through and I can’t exactly put my finger on it, but you really have a magical blend of fair critique, with the open mindedness to allow your opinions to grow and change shape throughout your games, mixed with great entertainment value and reactions. I’ll be watching more for fucking sure!!
Yeah, this was definitely a worthy entry in the series. The boss fight design and mobility options were absolutely perfect, honestly. I know that Samus Returns was a bit of a hit-or-miss for some people, but I liked it too. Honestly, give the series to these devs, get them better ambient music composers, and watch them continue to refine their craft. :P Because they're pretty good at it. I'm glad you're into the series now, Max! You've got PLENTY of fun stuff ahead of you now!
Turns out the biggest thing Samus needed to make her feel complete was Megaman's slide. Seems silly since she already had the morphball, but that one addition makes the game a lot better.
@@MidlifeCrisisJoe Yeah, slide makes things smoother. I also really enjoyed Flash Shift (Makes it so you don't need to predict a boss's movement to be able to dodge it), and the easier walljumps. :P
Just recently beat Metroid Dread, and I was most pleased to a godly level of hype. Puzzle solving moments like speed boosting up steep inclines, storing additional shinespark by launching into slopes, and the Ferenia alcove roll-boost for the +10 missile pack... and then combat moments like using grapple beam after parrying a mawkin shield charge, and... the bosses, then watching videos, realizing a secret boss fight cutscene if you get morph and the vanilla bomb super early... and the badass stuff right after the Raven Beak fight. I feel sad I slept on the series for so long, but some time before Dread came out I did manage to snag a decent cartridge copy of Super Metroid with box and instructions, so I could finally put a near 25 year mistake to bed... that mistake being not actually trying to get used to the controls.
Thank you so much for playing this fantastic game from my favorite franchise of all time. People like you playing this game is giving Metroid so much exposure an that's precisely what this franchise needs. Looking forward to seeing you play Metroid fusion, Zero mission and the entire Prime trilogy. See you next mission my dude!!!!
Max starts to fight the final boss *looks at the time on the video, still over thirty minutes left* Yeah, that sounds about right. (Edit: Though really it didn’t take him that many attempts, go Max)
Loved the gushing at the end Dread kicks so much ass. I'm just happy that the future of Metroid looks bright, and I don't think we will have anymore long ass streaks without a new Metroid game being released.
MercurySteam should be the ones to keep making 2D Metroid and Retro Studios the FPS ones. This game was amazing, first playthrough I took my time and got 100% in about 20 hours. I was in no rush. The OST is really good, maybe not the iconic tracks we are used to but I am glad they went this route because in time some of these tracks will be memorable as well.
I remember having such a hard time with Raven Beak the first time I fought him. Now I can beat him on my first try! That's pretty much this whole game in a nutshell, hard as hell for first-timers and newcomers, but it gets easier and easier as time goes on.
"Officially a Metroid Weeb" Welcome to the club Max, soon you'll be attempting speedruns yourself and learning all the little tricks and sequence breaks.
Glad you enjoyed it so much, Max. The game is an instant classic. That entire last segment with the badass boss fight and the exhilarating escape sequence is absolutely amazing. And it's really replayable as well. Definitely a 10/10, must buy.
I like how this boss @3:03:00 was teased throughout the game in the background of a room and you know shits up when its missing after the X parasites are released.
Something that I think is so great about Adam being Raven Beak is that if you have played Fusion or anything, you can immediately notice something is off. What I mean is as soon as you get through the intro, “Adam” stops referring to Samus as “Lady,” instead using her actual name
you can identify that "adam" isnt adam right at the start, in the opening cutscenes of the game adam always calls you Lady, but after you arrive on ZDR "adam" always calls you samus.
Max's face when he discovers the speed boost blocks at 58:25 is the perfect reaction to that insane puzzle. Edit: Seriously impressive that Max beat Raven Beak without ever realizing that he was invincible outside of parries during the second half of phase 1.
The Cross Bomb boss, you can slide under his back legs. You're supposed to run up to Raven Beak when he waves his hand at you and counter him. Theres unlockable lore pictures called Chozo Archives, you get them by getting 100% in each area, also theres 6 unlockable Metroid pictures. To get the first 3, beat the game on normal in under 4 hours. To get the last 3, beat the game on hard in under 4 hours. Unfortunately it's impossible to unlock all pictures in one playthrough.
This is easily my game of the decade, Raven Beak is the best final boss in Metroid history, and he’s ridiculously fun to fight against, gosh dang time to beat this game for a third time lol
So glad to see a new Metroid Geek being born, like a baby Metroid! Cute but Deadly!! This is absolutely my GOTY, just 💯% Hard Mode!!! Thank you for sharing your passion and laughter with us all.
No amount of work on UI, sound effects, stance changes will ever be enough for Max. Legend says to this day he is still shooting Raven Beak's golden armor.
Welcome to the Metroid family, dood. Good to see its reaching more and more people these days, and people can see why we wanted a new 2d game for almost 2 decades lol
Seeing you not only discover Metroid for the first time, but to love both Super and Dread as much as you do, genuinely made me emotional. This series has been so fucking neglected for so long, despite cranking out great game after great game almost every time it's been given a chance, and has some fantastic lore behind it to boot. I'm so glad that so many people are getting a chance to fall in love with it.
god i love when the players manage to solve puzzle's differently then i do. like in the boost section what i did was jump, shoot so the blocks go out, press down for the boost and quickly use the cross bomb and then a regular bomb and then use the energy boost. i never knew you could still maintain speed and get out of the morph ball and turn back into human form while still being in super speed mode. I love this game so much man
Max's hype is so contagious. Glad he loves this game and is a fan of the series. Don't know how soon he'd do another run, but hope he watches a speedrun of this, especially to see the secret quick kills against Kraid and the Experiment.
I just want to say, out of everyone I have seen play this game so far, including myself, you have by far done the best job dodging the goo during the 'flappy bird' attack during the Experiment No. Z-57 boss fight.
Max, your positivity is awesome and one of the best parts of your streams. It's so refreshing to watch a genuine dude that legit ENJOYS video games sing praises on some of my favorites. I feel like (especially on the internet) everyone is a cynic, but watching you enjoy this and Super was really fun. Thanks.
