There's a few references to Vietnam War films. Ben Stiller's open armed gesture is a reference to Willem Dafoe in _Platoon_ and the confrontation between Tugg and Kirk at the end is framed exactly like the confrontation between Martin Sheen and Robert Duvall in _Apocalypse Now_ One of my favorite bits of trivia is that the fake Vietnam vet Four Leaf is played by Nick Nolte, an actual Vietnam vet.

"Tropic Thunder" is just an amazing movie. Hall of fame comedy. It's incredible. Tom Cruise is so good as Les Grossman, and his dance is great too. Might have been better if you'd seen "Platoon" before this. But maybe you'll make a reverse connection when you do see it. There's lots of references to things in this film, and I realize you probably won't ever catch them all.

You should check out Tom Cruise in the movie adaptation of the Broadway Musical "Rock of Ages". He plays Stacee Jaxx, a Rock Star & sings " Pour Some Sugar On Me". Also you should watch " Born of the 4th of July" which is the story of a man who is ultimately injured in the Vietnam War. The 1st movie shows that Mr Cruise is a genuine rock star who can sing & the 2nd movie is a heartbreaking and unforgettable image about war and the damage that never leaves. He is exceptional and skilled in both comedy and drama. Thanks for today's reaction💜

Tropic Thunder is very much in the same vein as pretty much any Mel Brooks movie. Smart, well written satire that pushes at the edges of impropriety but does it in such a way as to make you think as well as make you laugh. That such a film showcases the acting abilities of RDJ and Tom Cruise is a major bonus. Plus, pretty much everyone wants to see Satan's Alley actually get made.

Ben Stiller getting shot with open arms in the beginning is a homage to Willem Dafoe in the epic Vietnam war movie "Platoon" and the grosse wounds and napalm scenes to another epic Vietnam war movie "Apocalypse Now". One can say a lot about Tom Cruise, but him telling Stiller "I want to have fat hands and dance", after reading the script, was a genious move... ru-vid.coma3fKXBNufy4

@@ToniMcGinty And he committed to it. He did a great job with all the accents in the film. And that subplot of losing his identity as an overly serious method actor. Ben Stiller came up with this movie idea when he acted on "Empire of the Sun." He said some of the cast went through a short boot camp before the rest of them arrived and talked like they were really soldiers. They took it so seriously it was off putting to other actors and crew. He thought it would be fun to make a movie poking fun at that and the other members of the motion picture industry. And that note about "going full retard," was irreverent, but astute. The film roles with a person playing a severely developmentally disabled adult is awkward for people and rarely ever wins acting awards.

I was shocked that Tom Cruise played such a good bad guy in Collateral (with Jamie Foxx). Then this Les character in Tropic Thunder is so stinking funny. Then he played a hard-working farm boy in Ireland, turned "brawler" when migrating to America in Far and Away (with Nicole Kidman). If you look at his back in that movie (wide musculature) compared to his chest (smaller pecs but trim) in that movie... he is totally believably as a hard working farm kid physique. He did that body transformation on purpose. Tom Cruise is amazing at his craft. He goes all in and can do any character in any genre.

One of my all-time favorite movies. I read that when Ben Stiller pitched the Les role to Tom Cruise, he said that he'd do it only if he could have 'fat, hairy hands and could dance'. What Tom wants, Tom gets!
@extantsanity
@extantsanity 19 дней назад
Actually, it was Tom Cruise who pitched the idea of Les to Ben Stiller. Stiller had given him a rough draft of the script, and Cruise said it was missing a representative of the production company, someone who'd pressure the director and push the actors to their limit. Stiller came up with the Les Grossman character in a rewrite, and Tom asked to play him under the condition of the fat hands and dancing. Stiller wasn't even sure if Cruise would be a good fit for the character he wrote until Cruise got in the suit and showed what he wanted to do, and then it clicked and Stiller gladly took him on the cast.

There is a movie, “Black Like Me” which is a true account of Journalist, John Howard Griffin who in 1959 took medication to darken his skin. He wanted to live as a Black man to experience the atrocities that African Americans had to endure living in the South. He published his experiences in his novel Black Like Me in 1961. They then made a movie based on the novel in 1964. Excellent novel and movie.
