This is a drugged up version of Alice in wonderland. This was 1967. I was 7 years old and remember hearing it on the radio and my older brother playing it. This was the “hippie” days. I love Grace Slick, especially her songs "Two Heads", "Rejoyce", and "Hyperdrive". She also did 4 solo albums. This song got by the censors because they thought it was about Alice in Wonderland. It was but it was also a cover for the drug culture.

I moved into a house in Bolinas, CA in 1978 that Jefferson Airplane had lived in. It is still called the Airplane House at 99 Brighton in Bollinas. The day I moved in a went to use the bathroom and the gold record to this single was glued to the bottom of the toilet cover.

We were 17 (my class) and music like this in the summer of '67 was the rage. Psychedelic music was the "norm". From Jimi Hendrix to Janis Joplin to Grateful Dead to the Beatles...everybody was doing it. Fluorescent black lites &posters, lava lamps and "grass" took us to that next level. Grace wrote and performed this song and "Somebody To Love" in San Francisco in the 60's when drugs were All legal. This is a takeoff from the children's storybook "Alice In Wonderland". She has one of the best voices in rock. At this time there were two guys in the band that could also sing lead. These two songs really were the stepping stone to making this band soar to stardom. I am turning 65 next year and my life experience has taught me that there are all kinds of "rabbit holes" a person can fall into in life. Bad marriages, crappy jobs, crazy friends and neighbors. Life is itself very much a trip and dealing with people, bosses, like the red queen, who have no care about the lives they ruin (off with their heads), the white rabbit that is so wrapped up in his own world he hasn't got the compassion to help someone that is very lost and alone, the hookah smoking caterpillar that just sits and gets by, by staying high all the time, the Cheshire Cat that gives wise advice but can not be depended on to be anywhere long enough to be of any assistance. And then there is the door mouse with the advice that a person has to feed their mind with knowledge in order to grow mature enough to learn to deal effectively with what ever life throws in front of them. Telling stories to children has been going on for hundreds of thousands of years and teaching children life lessons through those stories is the way to wake up their minds and help them to think for themselves before they get so busy with lifes distractions that they stop listening to those trying to teach them. So the stories of Alice Down the Rabbit Hole and Through the Looking Glass (old world phrase for a mirror) come to be. Songs and music are the present day versions of telling stories on lazy sunny summer days. So, what else have you learned lately? What have you done to "feed your head"?

I grew up in Phoenix in the 70s...we use to eat the peyote from the cactus!! We would have huge boondockers out in the middle of the desert with live bands and kegs of beer!! Damn I had a great teenager life!!

I used to go out & party with my Mom. She's not the average Mom. She has friends in bands & it seemed like every bar we went to with a band she knew, they would play White Rabbit & have her sing it. I HATED this song with a passion! Eventually though, I came to think of my Mom whenever I heard this song so now I love it! It makes me smile thinking back on all the good times we had together.
