What happens after you take the head

@@UnitA__ Basically: You carry it out, the world doesn't end, the head is revealed to be alive (this was her plan all along; had Mark talked to her she'd make him give her the blade) and the narrator realises he's been played (her goal was to escape without detection), just as the world end and he vanishes. The princess thanks you, as she needed you to trust her to escape (plus there were several hints such as Skeptic pointing out that she tried to wink), just as the hands grab her.

I will say the drowned ending is really weird cause she never really tells you to take her head, but they are doing a bit of a revamp to the game and will be changing that bit to make it fit better

It does. I won't say how but it does. Plus he skipped a really funny part involving the narrator giving the player "evidence" that the princess is dangerous. Also, once the Pristine Cut comes out, not taking the head will result in a new route, while the Grey (drowned) will exclusively be found through trying to kill the prisoner.

@@Dasher05 Well spoilers obviously but... During the bits where you ask questions before going to the cabin you can ask about the princess during chapter 2. On the Prisoner route, the Skeptic asks for proof that she's dangerous and the Narrator tells you to check your pockets and if you do, you'll find an envelope marked "The evidence". Inside it is a piece of paper with your handwriting, allegedly, which reads "The princess will end the world if you don't slay her. This is an immutable truth." Skeptic and Hero are obviously suspicious but the narrator stands his ground.

They wouldn't become "bad" but won't be friendly to you since you are not to them, plus you will even more see them as bad This is not something you will "try" to do but something unconscious, like if you heard rumor on that person (like the narrator does in this game) or if their first impression don't work with you. Or even if youre too skeptical

For example, if you don’t consider a person an enemy, then no matter how cruel said person is to you, he still wouldn’t be your enemy. Whenever you label someone as bad, that’s what that person becomes, even when to someone else it could be the best person ever. Every adjective about a person only exists in your head. “Other people don’t exist, they’re just a reflection of you”. Really creepy way of phrasing it, but.. yeah, it’s true.

Well the devs have another game called Scarlet Hollow which is another VN but with more characters and locations, if that's what you're looking for. It's currently in early access. Plus one of the devs, Abby, has a comic series called the Last Halloween which she has said she will get back to once work on everything else has finished.

The voices banter and style of the game was inspired by disco elysium!! The devs even posted the demo to the disco elysium subreddit. If you enjoyed the banter between the “personality traits” and the writing style, you’ll love disco! the VA is Jonathan Sims, i highly recommend checking out his other work! he's a writer as well as a VA in a few podcasts, most popularly: the magnus archives, where he plays the lead he named after himself lol. he also wrote most of if not all of the episodes for tma! i highly recommend it :p

Not to mention that apparently his will is so strong that he can override the Narrator.

Actually Hero mentions "preening", which is what birds do and other voices mention it as well. Plus certain princesses do it too.

It pisses me off that none of the options seem to allow us to question our bird-like form lol it seems to be the one option the game doesn't allow us to pursue.

@@statusburning4113 So the goal of the game is to bring 5 vessels to the "main" princess - the one that you meet after looking in the mirror, right? When you save the game, it also saves the number of vessels you've collected. If Mark was to load a savefile from the very beginning of the game - back when he was actually trying to slay the princess, the count of vessels would go back to 0, because he hasn't even met the "main" princess in that savefile yet.

Well yea, a save file is a snapshot of the game's state at the moment it was created.

@@Lofi.z34 Depends on games. Some games (like Undertale) will keep some values in a separated file that isn't affected by reloading saves. And the way this game keeps track of the vessels already obtained could have been done this way.

That was one of my earlier theories too! But thankfully, it's a little more thought out than that, and isn't nearly so meta. There is a real backstory here, and it's tragic for him.

That's a really interesting prediction! I suggest that you stop watching this playthrough now and play the game yourself. Please. It's an amazing experience and better the more you get to experience it fresh. It's not very expensive (there's a discount tomorrow!) and the devs themselves support pirating it if you can't afford it. It's really well-done and you will keep having questions the longer you play.

@@Espion-while the game might not be too expensive, a computer is, really wish I could play it myself but I’m not willing to wait months on a conclusion so Mark’s videos are the best I got.

Another alternate end is killing her right away and you unlock the voice of cold in chapter 3 and the voice of smitten hates him and argues with him the whole chapter. Was the most hilarious dialog for me during my play through. 😂

The Narrator says at the beginning of each run: “She will lie, cheat, make bargains. Anything to get what she wants.” Funny how (at least to start with) the princess isn’t the one who does any of that…

Spoilers, an explanation as to why it's like that: His thoughts reshape the very own reality he is currently in the things around him, so if he believes the princess is dangerous then she will be dangerous, like if she's dangerous like a beast she will become a dangerous beast, That's why he can't tell him, otherwise things will change and he can't get him to stomach the concept of actually killing her as to erase it.

The perceptions of The Long Quiet (The player and voices) influence reality, the narrator is trying to influence you to do what he wants by narrating the events in a certain way to make you end up Slaying the Princess.

At the end of a regular story, you save the princess and the story ends. With the story ending, so does the world it is set in and more importantly, the narrator. So what he says is true, when the princess leaves, the world the story is set in ends. So the narrator sabotages his own story so it, and he, don't end.

The narrator doesn't want you to kill the princess because he's the narrator, he wants you to kill The Shifting Mound (The princess) so that everyone is unable to die and he can live in his perfect world.

Some spoilers: She does give signs that she wanted you to take her but she just couldn't be open about it because the narrator was watching. Skeptic even points out the wink and tries to play along. Also, you can also get this ending by actually following through with killing her. And once the Pristine Cut comes out, that will be the only way to do it, while not taking her head will lead to a new ending, which was teased in the trailer.

Yeah the princess comes off as really dumb in that vessel lol seems to be mad at the MC even though she literally killed herself.

She had a whole plan - the player would give her the blade, she'd cut her head off, and then the player would carry it out of the cabin, effectively sneaking her out without the narrator realising. Though resorting to killing the player seems a step too far (which is why they're linking this option to another route and making killing Prisoner the only way to get this one), she has every right to be mad - they botched her plan, and in Mark's case, from the get-go.

Also a dead head is typically not considered a person. Furthermore her ghost didn't elaborate on the fact that the MC "botched her plan" when she very easily could have. (BTW I didn't look at your spoiler)

@@knaughta.masso-kist5944 Okay there's a whole section that Mark accidentally skipped over: If you sit where you're told to, she tells you the only way out is another surgical removal, but then she'll tell you to give her the blade and not do it yourself otherwise she'll strangle you. Again, she's not dumb at all, she's well aware we weren't in control of our body last time, therefore, she knows about the narrator's presence, but she also wants to be sure we didn't indeed do it of our own volition, so she's being cautious, as is Skeptic when he weighs out our options. Plus, she's being extremely subtle about her plan, because she doesn't want the narrator to catch on, and since the narrator is with us, she has to give us as few hints as possible. For instance, you seemed to miss the part where both the narrator and the Skeptic said she half-winked before losing consciousness. And a dead head might not be a person but it's still identifiable. And if you do take it, there are even more subtle hints which eventually pay off. Anyway, as I said before there's another way to get Drowned Grey which is to follow through with killing her, after which she'll remark she should've expected some revenge after she killed you, but then warn you not to expect any help from her next time, even if it damns you both. And it will be the only way to get it since, again, they're making it so not taking her head leads to a new route.

There’s genuinely so much effort into creating variety between all the choices here. It’s a fantastic game and anyone still on the fence should buy it!

There are 24 vessels in total, but even then that’s not the total number of paths because it doesn’t take into account what you choose to do with each vessel

This is certainly the case for Chapter II. However, for Chapter III, there's often some degree of variability to the voices, depending on your choices in Chapter II. For instance, there is one path where the default Chapter III voice addition is Voice of the Cheated, but if you tell the Princess that she's beautiful in Chapter II before you die, it changes to Voice of the Smitten instead (which in addition to changing the dialogue, also gives you a unique interaction option in the new chapter). There are also several versions of Chapter II which branch into the same Chapter III, but since the Chapter II voices are different, the cast of their Chapter III counterparts are also different.

To add to what the other person says- in a rare moment when the devs confirms a fan theory, most if not all of the chapters where the voices "debuted" in are where they are at their worst.

@@KittyKatalina You can also get Smitten by telling her, more genuinely, that you're both hurting and if no one makes a change you'll keep killing each other. The other two options lead to Cheated, ergo he's not really the default voice in this route. I don't think you can call any routes the default one actually. Also there are some where the cast of some chapter III's are the same regardless of which chapter II you came from, but the dialogue always reflects it eg: Wraith (Paranoid and Cold) from Nightmare and Spectre; Fury (Stubborn and Broken) from Tower and Spectre.

@@lucifercookie2844 I'd say it's more of a rejection of fear of death, since in all those instances you've already slain the princess, and in the Razor choosing to become numb to her also gives you Cold

I genuinely thought that was going to happen, this is a unique playthrough though

@@Sircowcosmic It's so wonderfully creepy--every time you ask her what SHE wants to do, her _very art style itself_ gets simpler, and simpler, and SIMPLER...until she's almost a scribble. The Damsel is one of those love-interest characters that was literally written only TO BE the love interest, and _nothing_ else. She literally has no thoughts or desires other than what the hero wants. So the more you ask her "No, but seriously, what do YOU, yourself, want?" the more she literally unravels. Her voice gets odd sounding as it goes along too, like the harmonics are being stripped out. IT'S SO COOL. :D

And I am deeply disappointed because it's such a cool moment.
