Well done, Jim…👍 I was flying out of Spire View on Sunday, went to Thruxton and back and the weather was pretty good, with us returning at 3500 ft and all clear below, back into Spire. When we arrived back we heard of your predicament from Steve Vaughn, who had intended going to Sandown but turned back at Lymington due to the deteriorating conditions. He heard your exchanges with Bournemouth and we thought it may have been you. So glad all worked out well for you 😅 Thank you for posting the video 👏 It is a valuable lesson for all pilots, especially students and those who may be a little complacent !! I fly Mark’s C42 but have a share in the EV97 G-DFDO which will be moving to Spire from Thruxton probably next month The airfield has become quite a hive of activity with some great people there… ( and visitors, of course 😜 )
Unacceptable for EGHH to charge you full price for an unplanned weather divert. I truly hope that policy never comes back to bite them. Great decision making!

Apparently EGHH is in the minority when it comes to no charge for a weather diversion. They say it's because of the number of pilots who turn up overhead and declare an emergency to get a free landing. As usual, the few spoil it for those whose lives might well be saved by unencumbered assistance when a frightened pilot makes a cry for help. Look what happened in Exeter, two souls lost in a Mudry Cap because D&D and Exeter Approach didn't get their act together. Disgraceful lack of empathy. Nonetheless, on this occasion, money well spent and a useful experience. 😎
Yes, I was cross about that too ! Turns out I didn't switch my audio mixer to on which would have given me the conversation with ATC. That's why I included so many pop up explainers. I would just say that in the event you find yourself in this position, use your own words to explain your situation, ATC will get that and their help will follow. REMEMBER, fly the aeroplane at ALL times. 😎
I is probably the video / camera view but it looked like you lost VFR, as it looked less then 1.5 Km horizontal viz at least you had a get out option and used it. A good lesson for all of us.
@@SuperRealityKid I could see you could see the ground, it was the horizontal that is hard to tell in the video that looked below min but we all know how video can make things look worse than what we see in real life.
