Your concerns are definitely justified as to the name. Speaking of creature toughness, might I mention Tree of Perdition.

This has a hidden mode as a clone/0 toughness commander which is pretty funny.

This will be really funny with shadowborn apostles since whenever you sac them you can either draw 6 cards or put out 6 more apostles.

some fun options to play IMO include Sewer Nemesis, Nighthowler, Clever Impersonator, and Phyrexian Metamorph. All have effectively 0 toughness while in hand, and can be very good in the right circumstance.... then again they're not all that expensive to play normally anyway, so maybe I stand corrected.

My friend and I are doing a build challenge within our local card shop where our commander is from the 50 cent rares bin and our 99 are from the 10 cent bulk boxes! I picked this guy as my commander and I actually ended up finishing my deck today and was pleasantly surprised with how well rounded I got this deck to feel with only spending about $10

I think the words of cycle really would make this commander quite amazing and extremely versatile. With the enchantments out now your opponent really doesn't know if letting you draw a card is you making the table discard, or gain yourself 5 life, or bounce permanents. And you can really leverage what your opponents want with these effects. Someone got something in their hand they've been saving? Now they probably won't let you draw the card in case words of waste gets activated. Someone playing voltron? Words of wind got your back. Lifegain is the weakest, but there are many circumstances where it might come in handy as an option. Also alhammerets archive is a 3rd card draw doubler and could potentially combo with the white words card 🤔

Have to say I find this one underwhelming since your opponents could make sure you only ever draw cards. Which is nice with some kind of loop like gravecrawler and phyrexian arena, but there are enough ways to draw your whole deck already. And even with something spicy like playing a phyrexian dreadnought to die immediately, I think your opponent will see right through that and just let you draw. Maybe if you play it as a political commander it could work, but I wish there was a way to force its replacement ability to resolve.

I think of this a draw engine only, the second option will almost never come to fruition, you play a lot of hatebears and then just have some combo wincon the draw thing is to capitalize of your hatebears dying to keep your removal, counters and dig more so you find you wincons.

Only when you won't pay the 2, then you have my permission to draw.

What if you built the deck around the card draw, and every opponent was too scared to give you the free creature. Like you actually have no good creatures, but the opponents don’t know that, so they always let you draw.

Like the card but the artwork just does not actually do (DND) Bane justice. Compared to his 4e artwork he looks like just some guy taking a picture for tinder rather than the lord of war and darkness he is.

Surprised no mention of Athreos, God of Passage. That was the first card that came to mind for me here. Similar sort of thing as Bane, and it works very well with him. Creature dies, now the opponent has to choose two things. Do they lose 3 life or does the creature return to hand? And then, do you cheat a creature in (possibly the same exact one) or do you draw a card? Athreos really starts to complicate the situation when he's on board with Bane, for sure..

In the same set, Rassad Yn Bashir lets you assign damage based off of toughness.

I have a question: With the Altar and Mortus combo, Does the stack rule not interrupt this ? I mean first Mortus dies, than Bane triggers putting him on top right? So isn't Mortus stil in the graveyard when Bane's deal resolves, meaning Mortus can't be picked to summon from your hand?

So if a creature with 11 or more toughness dies I could possibly cheat out a Blightsteel?

This guy's name is actually Tyrannos in the german version for whatever reason, so if you want to play him without the Bane impression, just run a german version.

I think this can only be good in aristocrats/card draw decks (like Queza) there's really gotta be even benefits on both ends.

The wording on this card is rough. Equal or lesser toughness of the creature that died or Bane? I'd assume it's for the creature, but it would be a simple fix to make it clear.

Question: */* creatures are considered 0/0 when they aren't in play unless they have specific text, correct? If so than there are tons of stuff in those colors that are */* that could be really good to get out. Quite a few Angels with power and toughness equal to your life total.

Scourge of the Skyclaves would be great in this deck.

Shouldn't Bane have been the Lord of Tyranny, not Darkness??? Shar is the God of Darkness in Forgotten Realm generally, am I missing something? Bhaal was the Lord of Murder, Myrkul was Lord of the Dead, and Bane was the Lord of Tyranny I thought? Also, I just looked, Bane was already dead/reforming in Xvim in Forgotten Realms by the time Bane was a character in DC, based on a quick google, so you should show him more respect, even if he is very much a bad guy. He had a much better plan for recursion than Bhaal, who actually foresaw his death and still flubbed things up pretty hard anyways, being reliant on his actively corrupt High Priest to recreate him from the essence of the Bhaalspawn. The card draw is nice, but it's a huge drawback that when your hand is small, they'll just tell you to put something into play, which you can't do. I guess Esper is pretty good at drawing cards at least, but I feel like you're going to need to have lots of incidental card draw in here, much more than you'd normally have for a Commander with serious card draw stapled to it, it's conditional enough that it's not going to be as consistent. Also, it's a GIGANTIC flavour fail IMHO, Bane is the one that should be choosing the fate of others, this card is not capturing the feel of The Tyrant.

Is it just me, or has Esper been doing some really un-Esper things lately? There was Raffine whose super-connive rewarded turning the playmat to the right, and then there's this that rewards non-token creatures with low toughness. Since when did Esper care about nontoken creature aggro when they have all these perfectly good floodgate enchantments, counterspells and other pillow forts? If I wanted to hit things, why play some kind of half-assed Esper beatdown when I can just play one of the few hundred different actual aggro commanders? Who needs to cheat out highly specific doofuses if and only if your opponents let you, when Gruul has this neat little thing called land ramp?

New Rule 0: anyone playing this as their commander must talk in their normal voice the whole time or forfeit the game.
