Windows on ARM finally getting a substantial push from Microsoft initially sounded great, but the whole focus on AI sort of killed it for me, especially Recall. I don't care if it's stored locally. Anyone that knows Microsoft's track record understands that an "AI" feature that logs what you're doing on your computer that can't be completely disabled is a ginormous red flag. Unless Microsoft is completely transparent with how Recall works and how exactly it uses the NPU to function (which we all know they won't), I personally wouldn't touch these Windows ARM laptops with a 10 foot pole.

Mm, but back then the "omni" prefix was just buzzwordy, kinda cool-sounding, slightly-nebulous-but-otherwise-innocuous marketing. Words like "omniscient", "omnipotent" or "omnipresent", for example, never entered our minds. But "omni" devices in 2024? Compulsorily riddled with Microsoft's invasive, ubiquitous, cloud-merged, AI surveillance superorganism? That signals _intent_. 😅

>Only PCs that have NPUs that can do 40 TOPS or more So we're ignoring that card GPU systems (and laptops with dGPUs) have processors that can do like 5 times that in int32 parallel throughput at the least? This is why the M4 is useless too, the M3M GPU can blow past everyone's neural accelerator including the snapdragon one. Of course you would not want to be dipping into NVidia power in a battery scenario but I see no reason to disqualify desktops with good GPUs from this. Not when all run-it-at-home models AND large cloud models use card GPUs anyways.

I get some of this attitude but until we've seen what people can do with these processors and smaller language models that don't require so much grunt, I'm not sure if we can say how useful it will be. I really don't see why a specialist processor for a particular task shouldn't be useful for that task. Just because we'd all like to run the whole Chat GPT model locally on a laptop, doesn't mean that the same tech wouldn't help us find files in Explorer faster than we could before. Or process an image for us in a way we can't do ourselves. Just like your laptop can run thousands of Steam games at full tilt because they're not demanding, and it can do simple sums in Excel but grinds to a halt on the most complex spreadsheets, it is also entirely probable that there are some, possibly less exciting but very useful, applications for a small amount of processing power dedicated to so-called AI. But yes, laptops are rubbish and no-one should use them if a desktop is available, they're strictly for people who are desperate to actually work away from their home base for some reason and anyone else who gets one is a fool.

Having these ARM chips is going to make switching to Linux as difficult and device specific as switching to a non-google android ROM isn't it? And that's probably at least partial reason they're all going this way too. I don't want the AI, I don't want OS-level ads and anti-cheats and back-doors, I just want a freaking computer. I'll pay whatever they actually cost, so please OEMs, stop subsidizing them with this awful crap.

@Daniel_VolumeDown
@Daniel_VolumeDown 13 дней назад
Theoretically no but in reality idk. I mean there is ARM certification programm called systemready. So when certain chip complies with some tier in this prpgramm then this means that this chip should meet some hardware and firmware (for example UEFI if I am not wrong) requirements that should allow for "universal" arm code execution. I am still worried about GPU's though. I don't know if this programm requires some standard in terms of GPU's but on mobile ARM, drivers (not only for GPU) is probably the biggest problem when creating custom rom. It is probably already answeared question somewhere (since there already existed windows arm devices, and you prpbably can look in linux code to find out if drivers are there) but I wonder if GPU's like Adreno, mali or immortalis are (and how well are) supported on for example linux

That joke about neurolink dropping support at the end is something that has actually happened in the past. There was a bionic eye implant that helped the people test things see but the people suddenly had their apps turned off cause the company went bankrupt. There's not enough money in these medical implant things cause the company basically has to have a support team active for the rest of the patient's lives to make sure the software and everything is working properly. The implant was named the "Argus II" if anyone was wondering.
