@@MineRoyale. really? well, I lost interest many years ago when the original system with 5 PTs and 1 Worlds, every two months, was discarded. After that, I would still occasionally check the results of Pro tours, and then with mythic tournament came around i never bothered anymore

yes, that is his big strength, he doesn't just say ' RB are the best colors' but gives so many details on individual cards that work in certain decks but not in other decks, that is eally useful info for somebody like me who is experienced and quite good, but doesn;t have the time anymore to test it out myself like I could when I was 15 years younger

​@trbjrnjnssn sure, it's definitely a possible edgecase scenario but, it wouldn't have mattered. Something would have died regardless and that play has the highest upside.

Follow-up analysis of opponent's blocks and resulting board (i.e. if @42:35 LSV had cast Erkenbrand, equipped the extra Dunedain Blade to soldier token, and swung with everything available, leaving Erkenbrand back summoning sick). I.e. given that opponent could pick blocks that would leave them at 1 (and then could crack their food on their turn to go back up to 4) 1) what blocks would they pick? 2) and what would the board state be? Attackers being blocked: 4/2 double strike menace (needs to be double blocked), 4/3 (Protector), 4/2 equipped Soldier token Available blockers: 2/2 Pippin (can tap to save another creature via pro-creatures), 1/3 Goldberry, 6/3 first strike (Protector equipped with Glamdring), 1/1 token Considerations (try to save Pippin? who does the 6/3 first striker take out? who does Pipping save?): I don't think Pippin can survive. Hypothetically, the only way would be if Pippin AND the 6/3 first strike are assigned to block the 4/2 double strike menace (Lancer). In that case, LSV would get to order the blockers. Note: regardless of the blocker ordering, LSV's Lancer would only get to deal damage during the first strike phase, and would die from the Protector's first strike before it could reach the normal-strike part of the Lancer's double-strike ... meaning that LSV's lancer would only get to deal 4 damage to blockers, not the full 8 from both strikes. a) If LSV chooses the 6/3 Protector as the first blocker, opponent could respond with Pippin giving the Protector pro-creature, and both Pippin AND the 6/3 Protector would survive ... (not a good choice for LSV, since Pippin and Protector are the best two creatures the opponent has) b) otherwise LSV chooses Pippin as the first blocker, which means Pippin will die and the Protector will survive naturally (during first strike phase, Lancer assigns 2 damage to Pippin, and 2 damage to Protector, but Lancer dies before normal-strike damage) and so in response to ordering, Pippin can tap to save either the 1/1 token, or 1/3 Goldberry (probably Goldberry). So I think that no matter the blocking choices, Pippin can't survive unless LSV makes a bad choice, so saving Pippin is off the table. Which means that Pippin can be assigned to block the 4/2 equipped solider and they'll mutually die. The 6/3 first striker can take out any of LSV's attackers, and can survive on it's own via first strike unless it blocks the 4/2 double strike menace Lancer. And Pippin can save one (other) blocker via pro-creatures. So the opponent has to decide whether they want to assign the 6/3 first striker to block and eliminate LSV's Protector (normally 3/3), or LSV's menacing Lancer, leaving the other alive. I'm of the opinion that that Lancer is more dangerous. So my proposed blocks would be: * 6/3 first strike (Protector) & 1/3 (Goldberry) assigned to block and destroy the 4/2 double strike menace (Lancer) ... with both surviving via Pippin [after LSV chooses blocking order, regardless of ordering, Pippin responds by giving pro-creature to the chosen first blocker, and then the Lancer dies before normal-strike] * 2/2 Pippin blocks 4/2 equipped soldier token, they mutually die (but Pippin uses ability) * 1/1 chumps 4/3 (Protector) unblocked: 2/1 token, 3/3 Theoden, bringing opponent down to 1. Result after combat (ignoring temporary pumps): LSV: at 7 life, with Westfold Rider in hand LSV's board: untapped Erkenbrand 3/3, tapped: 3/3 (Protector), 1/1 token, 2/3 Theoden, both Dunedain Blades unequipped Opponent: at 1 life (but food token on board), 2 cards in hand (plus their next draw step) Opp board: 1/3 Goldberry, 3/3 Protector equipped with Glamdring (currently 6/3) If the opponent has removal/tap/bounce for LSV's only blocker, Erkenbrand, then Opponent can attack back for lethal. Otherwise LSV has a vastly superior board and on following turn can cast Westfold Rider (and possibly sack to destroy Glamdring), retrigger Erkenbrand's +1/0, re-equip both Dunedain Blades, and likely have lethal. Overall conclusion: while LSV's missed line with the attack was not actually lethal (put them at 1), it would leave them with a much weaker board (and Pippin off the table) and sitting at 1 life (or 4 with food), so was probably the correct play (though did leave LSV open to dead on the crackback if Opp had removal/tap/bounce)

Witch's Vengeance from Eldraine would also have done it. Naming human would have killed 3 of LSV's creatures.

black wasn't really that cut, we saw a fairly late trebuchet and mordor muster pack 1. you would have been totally fine first picking either smite or nazgul

They would both have to be legendary for the legend rule to apply. That is why clones with "the copy is not legendary" work.

You may put Westfold Rider in relation to the other Common 2-drops ( nearly every deck needs a couple of them) in the set, though: You may then find that it is actually one of the best among them; apart from, say, the Black 2/1, the Red 2/2 Goblin ( fails the Human test in Boros, though), or the Flamesmith/Pelargir Survivor combo that you only ever want in your Izzet decks. - Westfold is capable to deal with about half of the bombs in the format; imho, having access to cheap Artifact/Enchantment Hate matters quite a bit. And, when it successfully trades with another 2-drop, then it often has already done its job. Finally: Black Breath and Fear Fire Foes exist exactly for the reason that a lot of Tokens and 1 Toughness creatures exist in the set; Westfold Rider is just that prominent example.

@@Badbentham you use a lot of words but Rider is still one of the worst 2 drops in the format. I am saying that after 30+ drafts and 69% winrate on mtgo, which is way more competitive than arena. Even the 2/1 white idiot that tempts when dying is way better (though also rather mediocre)

@@mtgbast "One of MANY" worst 2-drops. 😉 - Rally is by a long shot Top1; quite far behind are the 2/1 and Muster in Black , and the 2/2 Goblin in Red. Westfold Rider certainly happens to belong to the whole rest: Mediocre stats, but occasionally major upside. - In LSV's Boros case imho still better than Took Reaper , being Human, and having only rather little synergy with Ring Temptation in his deck. Of course LSV could also have alternatively waited for the White Cavalier Bear that never came... 😎 P.S. : " In a vacuum, Westfold Rider would not be a very good card." -Sure!

@@Badbentham Mordor Muster is literally card advantage for 1B, it is a league above Rider. Agree the 2/2 Goblin is medicore, but at least it has toughness 2 and some nice synvergy with other commons, like Trebuchet. Toughness 1 is just terrible in this format wihtout ETB or dying trigger.
