What I love about the Ohio State Marching Band is that they are always completely in sync while marching and playing at an extremely fast pace which is at 180 beats per minute, and sometimes it looks like they reach 200. They are marching on their toes with no flat footed, rolling walk which is why they're able to pull the shows off as they can move quickly into and out of formations. They do all of this while being very good musicians which allows them to have unmatched, creative half-time shows. The tradition never changes which is also why they have outstanding alumni come back every year and they march together at an early season game. So professional and outstanding.
Tailgating is the tradition of cooking and partying in the parking lot before the event. It gets its name from people sitting and cooking on the tailgates of pickups. Its become almost as popular as the events themselves. People pride themselves on their setups and cuisine.
It's basically a festival in the parking lot before the game. Some places have games and there is good food and beer everywhere. You will also get so much friendly reception if you wear the home team's colors or clothes, but either side should be friendly with the food.
Exactly. Even here in NYC where most people take public transport to the event (or don't own pickups), we still call it tailgating and it is a necessity. If you take public transportation, you'll often know someone who brings their vehicles to the game and meet up beforehand. Hell, you can sometimes just find a friendly bunch of fellow fans once you get off the train, donate a few beers to their tailgate and you're off to the races. Before you know it, you've made a bunch of new friends and you're ready to go watch the game. It's amazing.
Hey! Native Ohioan here. Didn't know if you realized or not, but a really big thing happened at 12:14. The two sousaphones dotted the I's. Here in Ohio, we only do Script Ohio facing one side - the OSU side (west side of the stadium). Dotting the I is an honor here and it is usually covered in big news articles about the OSU games.
After being an ohio state fan for 30 years I finally got to see the the band in person last nov. It was so fun. Being in the crowd with over 100 thousand fans makes the band hard to hear but the performance was excellent.
I am a BIG Ohio State Buckeye fan since 1974. My favorite team in my favorite sport, college football. Really appreciate you doing this reaction video. Go Bucks, Beat Michigan!!!
The very end performance is called "Script Ohio" its one of the oldest traditions in college football. it is performed before every Ohio State home game and the whole stadium of 100,000+ people chant it. the end of it is called "dotting the eye" and is a very big honor. it is always just on one side but for the special occasion they made it split for both sides.
The same band did a half time show during the Ohio and Michigan game it was a tribute to the movies. Superman, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, and Pirates of the Caribbean
This is just incredible--the number of different formations and the speed with which the band gets into formation (while playing). Truly TBDBITL--so impressive!! (imho from a loyal U. of Washington Husky alum...)
The march for Script Ohio is actually French--"Le Regiment de Sambre et Meuse"--written in late 1800s to commemorate events & armies of the Franco-Prussian War.
To help clarify the term, think of a vehicle like a pickup truck (or in earlier days, a station wagon) with a rear gate, the tailgate, that opens down. It becomes the picnic table. "Tailgating" is also the dangerous and antisocial practice of following much too closely when driving, from the same etymology, but otherwise unrelated. In security-cleared or other access-controlled areas, "tailgating" metaphorically refers to the practice of following closely behind someone when you have forgotten your own pass, getting into a secure area on their pass. You can lose your job for this. More than anyone wanted to know.
They also have shows of Led Zeppelin, Micheal Jackson, and popular video games that are worth a look. I know of people that have bought tickets for the game just to see the pregame and halftime shows of the band And they also watched the game and learned about the passion of the crowds for the team AND the band I hope you get to see them live. They mostly perform at home games and the post season bowl games
I’m very happy you enjoyed it and I come across the way it did as intended to do a lot more in the future on my other channel. I have a new channel I hope you can check it out, I will post lots more soon!!! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-F4vT0SDTYEI.htmlsi=iQ_FK70290HEBwUn
Really want to blow your mind, they do a new show ever single game. They only had 2 weeks to practice this London show. Also, they are full time students
Since you mentioned several times including the end that you hoped to learn more about American sports, allow me to add another comment. To learn about American football I would recommend "The Rules of American Football" by Ninh Ly, & the "History of American Football" by MYX News. To learn about Hockey which is a popular winter sport I recommend the "History of Hockey" by Laser History and "The Rules of Hockey Explained" again by Ninh Ly. I hope these will help provide both of you some understand of two sports popular in North America
A tailgate party, simply put, is an outdoor social event that is normally held in the parking lot near a sporting event. But that doesn’t really begin to describe it. Think of a tailgate, as an outdoor pre-game celebration. It’s true that tailgating is most often associated with college and professional football, but the popularity of this type of festive get-together has certainly spread to lots of other sports including; baseball, racing, soccer, basketball and even hockey, just to name a few. Not To say there can’t be other occasions to have one of these social shindigs. Many people “tailgate” at home in the backyard, on their deck, or in their driveway on game day. quoted from Tailgate Master.
All the American band geeks will know, but to answer the inquiry of marching bands, traditionally most every high school in the USA has one and have competitions for these field shows. My high school had one and we were awful. My university didn’t have one and I didn’t care. These shows, however are incredible.
You probably have no way of knowing this but this is NOT the Ohio State Marchin Band. This is the Ohio State UNIVERSITY marching band. There is a difference. They are two different schools. I lived less than 10 miles from this school for more than 50 years. Great, aren't they??
In 2013 I cycled across the US starting In New York I can’t remember everywhere but I did Cleveland and I remember a small town called bowling green. I loved that part of the country the people really helped me and were so welcoming.
