This is coming from a diehard Florida Gator fan where we have our own traditions so it may sound like sacrilege to some, but the best tradition in college football is at Iowa. Since the completion of the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital overlooking Kinnick Stadium, Iowa has honored the young patients in an extremely unique way. At the end of the first quarter of every home game, both home and away fans, coaches and players turn and face the hospital and wave (those in the stands during night games usually with lighted cell phones) to patients and their families watching the game from the hospital.

The goalpost came down at Tennessee because that was the first time we beat Alabama in 16 years (they have had a college dynasty for a long time under their head coach Nick Saban). It was one of the craziest games of football I’ve ever watched pro or college. And yes they did throw the goalpost in the river. The university actually started a gofundme to pay for the fine for storming the field and repair the goalpost and it filled in an hour or 2. I’m pretty sure they actually just donated that money as the University isn’t really hurting for the money.

The team names of college teams are often about their states identity. For example Tennessee is the volunteer state because so many Tennesseans have served in the military during war. Ohio is the buckeye state named after the common buckeye tree which produces a nut that looks like a chestnut. Indiana is the Hoosier state based on a common greeting “whose here” from the 1800s. Oklahoma is the Sooner state. North Carolina is the Tarheel state. And so on. The names often have historical significance that is a matter of state pride.

@@DNReacts As a Tennessee fan - the team who beat Alabama in that game and tore the goal post down - it was more than just "they hadn't beaten us in 15 years." Alabama has been consistently ranked #1 in the nation for those 15 years, while Tennessee has been going through major ups and downs with different coaches every couple years. The game meant a lot more than just beating a team we haven't beaten in a while. It meant that we as a team are back on the right track to compete in our conference again. It was also the first time in a long time our fan base had ANYTHING to be super excited about. Also, you asked how close the river is - the stadium quite literally sits on the river. The "Vol Navy" actually tailgates the games from their boats. It's Neyland Stadium if you want to google maps. Idk if it's still there, but after the game someone added the goal post as a map pin lol.

The Va Tech Hokies (burgundy uniforms) you saw had soldiers in blue uniforms. These are students who decided to join in the military with a scholarship after going physical and mental testing. A part of the school is a military academy. The cadets go to normal classes and stay in separate dormitories so they can receive extra training. After they graduate, they become officers in different arm forces (Navy, Air Force, Army, Marines).

@Gordon Schultz Thank you for the correction. I am Hokie grad myself. BS in Math minor in English with an education portion. I was going to be a math teacher. I got scared because I didn't know if I could be a good teacher as I was so young. My sister was joining Navy as she couldn't afford the rest of college. She's a Hokie too. She and I joined. She managed to get a scholarship by becoming a cadet after boot camp. It took me a few tries while enlisted. My boot camp commanders told I was an idiot because I believed the enlisted recruiter when I drove my sister there. I enlisted, too. They told me to put in for OCS. I got my commission. That was the first time we’d beaten Alabama (basically the Barcelona/PSG/Man U of college football) in like 16 years. It was the best experience I’ve ever had with sports in my life. Throwing the goalposts in the river is kind of a rare Tennessee tradition, that was the 3rd time we’ve done that😂 1st time was back in the 80s when we beat Alabama, 2nd time was in 1998 after we beat Florida, then this year after Alabama again. It’s usually after just a really big win at home. We had been so bad for so long and we finally had a really good season so as you can see, all hell broke loose!

Contrary to what others have said, there are designated away sections in college football stadiums. It's just that nothing stops away supporters from purchasing tickets on the secondary market that home fans have put on sale. Another good example of designated sections are for neutral site games. Such as the Red River Rivalry where University of Oklahoma and University of Texas fans are divide the tickets equally in a 96,000 seat stadium.

That game, in particular, was Tennessee beating their rival Alabama for the first time since 2006. Since then, Alabama has won 6 national championships and played for 3 more. I was at the game, and I saw sobbing in the stands. I just wish Alabama had made the kick 30 seconds before.

The song at @9:13 is at Alabama called Dixieland Delight by the country Band Alabama. But the song is actually about Tennessee. Bama plays it for some reason. The reason they are all home team crowds is the geographical size difference between here and UK. I'm amazed at the amount of teams in EPL because the entire league travels the same distance as just one of our states. It's common for teams here in the same division to be 1000-1500 miles apart. The equivalent of traveling from London to Warsaw or Moscow. The fanbase is usually the entire state.

It would actually really benefit the schools here if they combined but they keep voting against It because of football rivalries. 😂 I had a good friend that was a die hard Aston Villa fan. LSU has some great traditions, Garth Brooks's "Callin' Baton Rouge" is one of them. LSU also has a live tiger, beautiful animal in a beautiful enclosure (I'm sure there's a video somewhere). They put him in a travel cage and transport him from his enclosure to the stadium across the street and park him by the gate the opposing team comes out of. One of the things I like about LSU is that they have their own music, aside from "Tiger Rag".

It used to be a far more common thing for them to tear down goal posts at college games when they were made out of wood. Now they are metal and it takes quite an effort to do so. I doubt that it happens much at all. I mean they are set in concrete and all.

Kind of weird that they showed two Tennessee clips (the orange with the checkerboard endzones) where the whole stadium was orange; they're better known for doing a checkerboard pattern in the stands (depending on which section you're in, you're told to wear either orange or white). A few others do similar occasionally - I think you can kind of see the maroon-and-orange alternating pattern in the Virginia Tech clip, and Iowa does the same with black-and-yellow - but I believe Tennessee is the original, certainly the best known for it. Rushing the field and taking down the goalposts after a major win is discouraged for safety reasons and doesn't happen nearly as much anymore, but it does happen. My favorite instance of it has to be when the *away* fans did it at a Minnesota-Iowa game, back when Minnesota used to play at the Metrodome (an indoor stadium that had an inflatable roof; the entrances were mostly revolving doors to manage airflow). The Iowa fans never did figure out how to get the posts out of the stadium and ended up just doing laps around the field.
