These are two different styles of bands that you can’t really compare. The the Wisconsin its more a party than a formal performance . OSUMB treated it like a straight formal performance. And you see that consistently in videos of both bands on RU-vid. They’re trying to do different things. Ohio is there to kind of like the DJ at a party, there to help the people there have fun not necessarily have fun themselves, but the DJ still has fun just a different type of fun. Wisconsin is part of the party and the members are Party goers themselves. I don’t think that really needs more of an explanation than that.
Ohio State has the best college band in the country. They always sound great and look sharp whether they are marching on a city street, at Disneyland, on the ferry boat going to and from South Bass Island, or in a concert such as this. And I also think their drum majors are exactly what a drum major should be - majestic, talented and amazing.
Being an OSU fan, I have to go with OSU here, not just because I'm a fan but simply because they are just really good. OSU half time shows are just such a unique spectacle that I haven't seen much anywhere else. Other bands create pictures and symbols on the field, OSU takes it a step further and creates a motion picture, its just so cool and looks unbelievably difficult to do (For example, during the OSU show at Wembley, they animated a singer doing the splits and having the added detail of the microphone rock back, it's just too cool). If anyone wants a good example of what I'm talking about I recommend a quick watch of the OSU Hollywood block buster half time show, it's one of my favorites.
Man, just the respective band entrances into the place were so glaringly different in quality that it's hard to get past. Past that, while Wisconsins sound was good, their general positioning and movement around the field was of much lower quality than OSUs. If Ohio State is performing to their usual level of competency, they'll win every time if you can't even get basic things like where you're supposed to be correct.
@@soccerking4197 I said it is the largest "all brass and percussion band" (ie. brass band) in the world. There's no woodwinds, flutes or strings. And of course, that's the largest *standing* brass band - there could be larger ones formed for a special purpose (like on OSU's annual Band Alumni Day, when there's close to 1000 musicians marching together on-field).
cannot compare from this video at all. totally different environments. Ohio was in the Stadium. WI was in a warm up field. If the Video was fair the Bands would have been recorded in the same place. So I will keep with my Bias and say the Badgers one and will always win in the battle of the bands.
Both bands are great technique wise, but the sound quality (and I don’t mean the recording) of the buckeye band simpl6 cannot be surpassed, also OSU memorizes music.
Ohio wins no contest. I can get down with a good show style band even if I do lean towards keeping the precision of military and clean look but here is my take on this video Me coming into this an Ohio fan who’s high school played OW at football games: oh cool a comparison and a chance to watch Wisconsin play OW me after watching OW come in: decent cadence but wtf is with the constant stopping between rows trying to shuffle them in together? And the hopping really? Me after hearing OW: did that person say Wisconsin is better? Because although it might be fun on the field it doesn’t sound pleasant a rural NJ high school plays it better
Brandon Strupp That doesn’t mean anything honestly. A marching band should sound like a more powerful concert band. Go take a listen to some of the other big ten marching bands. They can play loud, and powerful while still being an ensemble. Loud and blasty is actually less powerful than in tune and balanced.
Clearly OSU a far better and more superior football team who not only Kicked our ass but blew us the F--k out for the thousandth time. Otherwise it's no comparison lol, UW- a much nicer and more Beautiful campus. And without question UW-Madison (just below Northwestern) is one of the Top Academic school in the Big 10 and a Top Public Ivy in the country. We also don't let criminals with nonexistent GPA's play on our teams lol. Oh and our band clearly Won this contest lol. Go Bucky & ON WISCONSIN!
OSU is a great school as well. Not sure why anything you said is relevant in a video comparing marching bands. Not even an OSU student but just about everyone in the marching band community knows OSU is one of the best in the world! UW Marching band is merely an afterthought who barely even memorizes their own music.
Yeah ... that's like calling yourself THE Ohio State University when there are several other Ohio State Universities. You don't know how stupid it sounds.
Musically Wisconsin's band is good but watching them they were out of sync. Arms were moving at different times. On the other hand OSUMB was crisp and in perfect unison. I am a bit biased being a graduate of The Ohio State University.
Wisconsin do not play well together. They are very loud, have bad tone, and don't blend together. If you listen to the difference in production of the Trombones and Trumpets from the the UW band to the OSUMB there is a stark and clear difference and winner. Ohio State all work during the summer on tone quality and part of the audition is tone quality, plus they do extensive work during the summer for ensemble sound and musicality. Also, Wisconsin's band is very unprofessional, during practices and during performances, while the OSUMB always holds themselves up very well and is very stoic and proud.
Osu has a majority of music majors in their band, Wisconsin really doesn't have that many. And the Wisconsin step is far more difficult, as well as their flips and turns. This isn't a concert band, it's a marching band. And if you're band always holds itself to the highest standard, what was that probation all about?
@@brandonstrupp3889 While this response comes much later than the original post, you'd be surprised what would happen if you put Wisconsin's marching band under the same microscope as Ohio State's was. They aren't all roses, and they do much worse stuff than the things heard with OSU, I can guarantee that. The culture is like a drunkin' frat at Wisconsin.
