John Strohbeen of Ohm Acoustics was a great guy. He will be missed. I love my Walsh 2’s.

About 3 years ago, I purchased a pair of Ohm Acoustics bookshelf speakers. They needed new woofers, so I emailed them in Brooklyn, purchased the woofers on line, and arranged to stop by the shop to pick up the replacements. I feel privileged that I got to speak to John for about 20 minutes while I was waiting for an associate to pack everything up. What a great guy. They do support all old models with replacement parts. And I love my Ohms.

Met John at the Winter CES Show 1987. He was friendly and thanked me for the compliments I made about my Ohm Ls. I had recently replaced the drivers and he told me they would last 30 years since they were made of polypropylene. Almost 35 years later they still sound great.

Really a rare thing when a company still supports all of their models across their entire history. I owned a set of Walsh 2 speakers back in the day. I agree that bass is their only shortcoming. I'd love to have another pair to play around with, but I that would have a snowball effect on finances because I'd need at least something to drive them with. My Bose Companions will have to continue being "good enough" 😅

I purchased my first “real” system at a Tech-HiFi in 1980. A Onkyo TX3000 receiver, and a pair of ‘Ohm model L ‘ speakers. Years later I managed to find the same gear on eBay and use them in my garage. Nice video, keep making them.

Those were the days. I bought a Thorens TD-166 Mk 2 turntable there as well. It's fun to get old gear from my youth. I just need an old Hafler amp and preamp now.

Hey Dan, I got my Ohm L's from the Tech Hifi at 12 West 45th Street on 9-22-1978 for $356 a pair. Ran them with a Pioneer SX-650 receiver and thought they were the bees knees. Also from that store I purchased an Onkyo TA-630D deck, Hitachi SR-804 receiver, Akai GX-f31 deck and think I got my Koss Pro4X phones there too. A great place to shop. When I bought the Hitachi, they were out of stock but expecting delivery. I paid cash and waited. Still no receiver. The manager offered me a "loaner" component of comparable power. I picked a Marantz 1090 integrated amp and used it for three weeks. What store would do that today??? NYC had the audio stores in the 70's/80's. Tech Hifi, Harvey's, Great Sounds, Stereo Warehouse, Churchill Audio, Lafayette's, Audio Graveyard heck, even Korvette's sold audio.

I’m from NJ and I visited some local hifi shops besides the chains like Silo, Sam Goody’s, and Crazy Eddies. Unfortunately I don’t remember the names, except Sight & Sound in Morristown and Woodbridge Stereo (that’s still there). In southern NJ/Phila there was Bryn Mawr Stereo “We Sell Goosebumps”.

@@MODAC, so you were a foreigner. I grew up (1950's) in Bush Terminal, Brooklyn. After military service I settled in Bay Ridge. How could I possibly forget Crazy Eddie, Sam Goody's (Goody's got it) and The Wiz. Absolutely loved his Crazy Eddie Doo Wop commercial. Appears there were some swell audio stores in Jersey too. It was a great time for hifi/stereo. Stores vied for our buying dollar and you could HAGGLE prices! Not no more. Tech Hifi had quality components, quality sales staff and a sweet service policy. Your receipt was your service plan or guarantee. Don't forget their speaker trade-in policy too.

Added Ohm model H speakers a year ago. Found them restored (with Ohm drivers) sonically and cosmetically for $275 the pair. I wanted these speakers in 1978 but couldn't afford the $700+ price tag. Took me a little over forty years but I finally got'em, fuhgeddaboudit.

Tech Hi-Fi is where I got my Walsh 2's in 86 , still have and enjoy them. At one time I thought about an upgrade but the reviews on the upgrade for $1400 were mixed with some saying it was worth it and others not so much. I also use a Sunfire true subwoofer with them to fill in below 45HZ ,though I have the crossover point set to 85HZ , this allows them to play louder without any strain .

I found a pair of OHM Walsh 4s . Cabinet looked really good, but same musty smell and loose bracing. Reglued all the braces, spray painted inside to get rid of the smell, went over the veneer with Liquid Gold and a Scotch Brite pad and cabinets were done. That took days. The drivers sounded OK, but they also were musty inside, so I talked to OHM and got the 4.5 upgrade kit. New 5000 drivers, binding posts and new grilles. Pretty darn expensive, but a super easy install (1 hour each at most) They sound super and look like brand new speakers. Probably my favorite all around speaker and I Ihave Quad ESLs, Dahlquist DQ10s and Thiel CS3s for comparison (the Quads are truly amazing, but you have to sit in a tiny sweet spot).

Have a pair of Ohm Walsh 2’s and 4’s; the 2’s are my main speakers and used with an audio video setup. No center channel needed. My cabinets were also in rough shape and I ended up buying another set of refurbished cabinets from Ohm in a light oak finish. The drivers have been upgraded as well to the “super 2” using new drivers from Ohm. In a very large room, I am using a SVS PB12+ subwoofer to fill out the lower bass response. These speakers are excellent and image very well without the need for a center channel. The 4’s do. It ha e nearly as good of a wife acceptance factor (WAF) so are used in a bonus room, no subwoofer, in a similar audio and video setup.

How many watts from the tube amp? I was set on Klipsch Fortes, but I’m feeling drawn to Ohms. For the Klipsch I had in mind the Primaluna tube amp with I think 10 watts - or was that the Luxman? Anyway, what tube amp are you using?
@wlodarczyktomek

@@christinearmington I am using a DIY tube amp 15 watts. A little more could be needed, because the Ohms have a relatively low efficiency (87dB). For a weak tube amp, I recommend the Akai sw125 or sw130 (efficiency around 100dB), very clear sound.

Well there's a good possibility that your Ohms may sound a bit weak in the bass is because of what I have found after doing service on them. (My Walsh 2s were originally manufactured in 1982) I believe it's because the fabric surround on those woofers which all the claims are 8 in not six The fabric surrounds depending on the environment the speakers were stored and have hardened up to a degree, raising the resonant frequency of the bass driver. This of course will affect the system design altering the tuning of the cabinet volume / port. In any event the pair of systems that I had. To have been stored in a high moisture area and also there may have been actual water dripping on the Walsh driver on top. I found rust and other things. I also found the same thing with the cross braces totally separated from the cabinet walls. It was explained to me by someone at the company that the earlier ones had a incorrect adhesive used. Looks like hot glue to me. In any event I reattach mine after cleaning all the old adhesive residue and epoxying them in place. Ultimately, the person Who wanted these opted to purchase the Walsh 2.2 modules from Ohm. He is very pleased with the final result. Also, the modern Walsh Drive units instead of a fiber cone utilize a driver of higher quality with an aluminum alloy diaphragm and cast aluminum frame of the driver very nice.

a little late to the party but a couple of things... i was curious about the ohm walsh's after zeos raved about them but i didn't know anything about their unique design. thanks for the explanation yes, i do remember tech hifi. my older brother came home from his freshman year. he had spent his book money on a system from tech hifi in cambridge mass. a&r turntable, shure cartridge, kenwood amp and i believe klh speakers. it was a revelation. i had literally never heard a real system before. it's hard to explain to people what the early 70s were like when all of a sudden we went from console hifis to component stereos.

That Episode sub - is that the Cub Sub (ES-SUB-CUB8-110)? What's your impression, without using it together with the other sub? I just bought one a month ago. To me, it's been the only sub that disappears and blends into the music. I have Polk, Boston Acoustics, HK, and Velodyne subs, and they all seem boomy and "I'm over here!" to me. No matter how I adjust position and volume, I can tell where they are. With the Episode sub, the music gains lower frequencies, but my ear isn't drawn down. I do have it cranked to 3/4 volume, and it's set at 0 on the amp settings.
