Oil catch can install how to on the Boosted Miata

How to install an oil catch can. I did this on the boosted Miata to help take care of a messy situation where oil is blowing out the driver's side of the valve cover.
This is a very straight forward install, taking the breather hose that runs out of the valve cover and into a catch can. The other opening of the catch can is then either run into the air intake system of your car or, as I did, into a simple breather filter that vents to atmosphere.
Since I am on a budget, I decided to purchase a cheap catch can from Amazon. It's not the best design, but it appears made of aluminum (as opposed to plastic) and should work fine. If I had the money, I would buy a Moroso, but that cost 150.00 - which seems really expensive to me.

i gave a thumbs up because i think u need all the help with getting your channel going and u seem like a nice guy who deserves it. i personally wish peoole would make their informational videos a lottle shorter and to the point. but i get some people like to spend 10-15min per video just to get a quick answer... not me though.

you should open up that new catch can and make sure it has some kind of material inside to condense the vapour/catch the oil, if there's nothing in there you could possibly end up with exactly the same problem just in a different location, wire wool works best in my opinion.

Josh Foster thanks, I will do that. pretty sure it's empty. I've also got a better place and way to mount it.

Why do you have two catch cans? Thats confusing me. Im trying to figure out how to install mine. Its a pretty cheap one but like you said i dont have money to just toss around right now. Im trying to figure out where i need to connect mine to my intake manifold. Right now one end of my catch can is wide open (i dont have one of those filter things) and i was told it should go to my intake manifold. Am i supposed to connect it to my PCV valve? If so, what do i do with the hose from my PCV valve going into my firewall? I have a 98 integra btw

hey what sort of heat shielding is that behind downpipe

Aaron Hurst that's a homemade heatshield from an old smog check sign (irony?) covered in an adhesive heat foil from summit racing. :-)

greg Peters from thecarpassionchannel says you plumb that hose back into the intake side of the turbo. is that necessary? He says if you just cap it with a little filter it would just cause a vacuum leak.?
@Seandoestech
@Seandoestech 7 лет назад
+Blue B6ZE Yes if you want to be emissions compliant. Otherwise it doesn't matter.
@scrappydogfinance8434

The reason for the 2nd vented oil catch can is because its a turbo car and under boost it is no longer getting vacuum on the intake manifold(where the other can is connected) its actually under pressure so that can is likely having its oil blown back into the valve cover under boost. So you do a 2nd can that can allow blowby air to go to atmosphere. Thats my understanding. Normally the PCV system has 2 hoses to the valve cover. 1 allows filtered air from the factory airbox to enter the crankcase. The other hose has the check valve(CHECK VALVE) on it which pulls blowby gases under engine vacuum into the intake. Ok wait. i just realized that the PCV eill normally prevent or minimize boosted intake air from blowing through oil catch can back into the valve cover. Some guys on youtube say to remove the PCV valve on boosted cars but they forget its there for a reason. Leave the check valve in place if adding an oil catch can.. thats just my 2 cents on this. i never installed one but worked on plenty of cars and understand the theory of operation. It makes sense.

Clean engine bay, seems all the oil leaks are resolved? Blow by out of a filter catch can or not doesn't sound like a leak to me.

two questions. What radiator cover are you using? and how did you get that huge scar?
@Seandoestech
@Seandoestech 2 года назад
The rad cover is from garage star, they are out of business. You can get a similar one from Goodwin racing: www.good-win-racing.com/Mazda-Performance-Part/61-0150.html?gclid=Cj0KCQiAu62QBhC7ARIsALXijXTkqdxXdBaJ2EtcIVHsfinjrQYrwsKzTEhZuO33z7mf0gXTTIRWgTEaAvAcEALw_wcB The scar on my wrist is from multiple surgeries to repair a severe fracture - complete success btw!

Hello Boosted Miata, I am about to fit a catch can to my car as well, I am wondering if you lose any engine oil after fitting a catch can? because it seems like you just let the oil flow to the air instead of putting it back to crankcase through ventilation. Thanks a lot for this informative video. best regards, Tanawat.
@Seandoestech
@Seandoestech 6 лет назад
+Tanawat Oonwattana you will lose some under boost. If you are.not boosted, you likely will not have enough pressure to force oil out of the crankcase vent.

Hey boosted miata, I really enjoy your videos and wanted to give you a good idea to improve your cheepo catch can. Affix a metal straw to the one port so the oil and air vapor is forced to the bottom of the can, then also fill the can with steel wool. tada! now its doing just as good a job as the moroso brand one.
