This 10+ video series comprises all the videos I took for myself to document the rebuild of a GM Chevy Tahoe 5.3 Vortec (LS type) engine. I don’t intend for this to be a “how to” video for others, this is just my journey and I recorded it for me. I include references to some of the most helpful videos that I watched along the way. Here’s a tip for a future mod. To reduce the amount of oil pulled in via the PCV, the LS6, 2, 3, 7 engines moved the PCV connection the the back of the valley pan, way less oil exposer. Plus oil separator cans should be mounted “higher” than the PCV connection so less oil is collected and naturally flows back down hill. 👍 Rather than buy a $107.00 LS6. Valley pan, drill and tap the truck valley pan near the back allowing for sealing gasket/block sealing; install a screw on PCV valve from a Toyota Tundra V8...$5.00 😎

turftalk83 I used a 2005 Toyota Tundra V8. I’ve been told all the Toyota V8’s use the same PCV valve but I can’t confirm. 👍

RedXray I can’t seem to find it, but iirc it may be the same thread as a spark plug or 02 sensor. I’ll keep looking.

Thats for the throttle body line to the valve cover. You need the driver side can. Thats the extra filter one.

not sure why he didnt answer, but no it doesnt eliminate it- all you are doing is installing the catch can between the original pcv hose connections.

There would've been a reason that the engine would've been burning oil,Holden had trouble with a piston skirt to bore clearance issue with the 1999-2000 5.7 litre Chevy LS1 engines where if they consumed 1.5 litres of oil every 10,000 kilometres,the engine qualified for a rebuild. Mine is a 2002 model engine, from 2000-2005 they were ordered with the 1999-2000 Camaro cam fitted but it had the LS6 intake fitted from 2000 onwards. Mine is unaffected by the oil consumption issue as GM fixed the issue up in 2000,it has done 341,822 kilometres & it has done 1040 kilometres since the last oil change & the oil level is actually a still a tad over full. A naturally aspirated engine shouldn't need a catch can ! They did have an oil consumption issue with the later 5.3 litre V8 engine but it has been fixed up with a revised PCV baffle inside the valve rocker cover. My PCV valve is on the other side of the engine, in the Camaros spot perhaps !

Hi I installed catch cans on both banks. (2004 Tahoe). At oil changes I have 1/8 cup in drivers side can, while passenger side is bone dry. What does this mean?

Passenger side valve cover pcv moves fresh air into the intake so you shouldn’t really have oil on that side

+Jose Navarro - Go through your PCV Valve and RETURN it back to the *same* location. Sorta like a splits, that is it :)

So - i double checked for you. I did get mine on eBay for $30 but it looks like I paid $10 on shipping (so I still got a deal). Looking at Amazon today, I am only finding them for $64 and up. Sorry for the misquote in the video. Still definitely worth it!

I can answer that for you. It's just that. A fresh air line. That's where the crankcase gets is fresh air from. It gets pulled into the crankcase, and then back to through the pcv valve on the other side of the engine, and into the intake from the intake vacuum. It's called a closed loop PCV system. This is also why it's important to NOT have a filtered vent cap anywhere on the catch can, or even using a vented oil cap. Reason is, the air that is being drawn from that line off the TB, has been metered by the MAF already. An example of this is, have your ever noticed when the engine is running and you remove the oil cap, you notice the idle gets rough? That's because the engine PCM has detected a difference in it's air intake. The MAP sensor readings changed a bunch, while the MAF did not. So it gets all wonky.
