Some small line up dowels in the mounting brackets with corresponding holes in the plate would be most helpful.

Max at Traxxion's video stated that it appears that some Goldwing Engine tolerances are a bit different hence the one Screw might not line up perfectly. He says the vast majority of bikes with this install have no issue with lining up and that there has not been any model year or serial number range identified as to which ones might be affected. The fix is to install a washer between the bracket and engine cover of the affected screw hole to shim and skew the bracket over a smidge then allowing proper line up. The kit will be supplied with extra Washers for this purpose.

Thanks for the tip. I can use my left over Harley jack (about 8 inches wide) to do the same. For the hole that maybe slightly off on the plate, some have mentioned they have enlarged the holes just a little, which makes the plate much easier to install.

I did drill out all of the holes to give a bit more play. Might give the washer a try on the left rear bolt.

It appears that the machining of the hole for the left rear screw is a bit off; the counter-sunk hole on the plate doesn't quite match up with threaded hole on the bracket. At least that what it looks like in the video.

If that’s the case, I hope Max sees this and refines this. Like he did with the bracket area around the oil drain plug. Tell tale signs of engineering fit and finish. Coming to market so fast. Something I would hope not to see from Traxxion.

I bet the engine guard on and off doesn't take but an additional 5-7 minutes off and on. Nice idea on the jack

I like to use a little dab of never seize especially when working aluminum vs. aluminum and given you'll be R&R this several times throughout its life for oil changes. That might ease the resistance on the left rear machine screw. Could be a little galling already going on. I wish Max made one for the '01 - '17's. Mine is an '05 & an engine guard/belly pan looks like an excellent idea but it should have some substance to it to withstand a hit from a foreign object on the road kicked up at speed. Yours looks like it will protect your bike well.

I would have started with some 2"X4" pieces with perhaps a 1"X2" piece if required. I'd also loosen all 7 bolts at the start, then insert the wood to hold the plate in place. I'd likely take the middle screws out first, then the outer ones. Also, looks like an ideal application for an electric socket wrench to undo the screws. Wouldn't use it to put the screws in but I would to remove the screws.

I would recommend using blue Loctite on those bolts just to keep them from vibrating out

The skid isn’t heavy. Loosen all the screws.take out 2 in the back and two in the front. Hold the skid up with your hand while you take the remaining screws.

I drilled out all of the clearance holes to make them slightly larger. They seemed to be slightly out of alignment so the additional clearance really helped. Once the screws are tightened the tapers on the headed center them all anyway.

Remove all bolts except for the right front corner. This allows you to just swing it out of the way, easy peasy. Yes the weight of the plate is hanging on 1 bolt, never been a problem for me, not like it weights a ton.

Cruiseman, why changing the type of oil recommended by Honda strictly for the new GL ? I am trying to understand this approach. If you change your oil as requested by the book, which is the healthiest schedule, why other oils? Anyhow, remember to do the DCT learning.

I have had a lot of people ask about alternatives to the Honda oils so I just decided to try Castrol. It meets all of the Honda specs so I don't expect there to be any issues. I did do the DCT initialize.

I seriously believe you are way overthinking this. The Traxxion engine guard does not weigh 30 lbs. It can’t weigh more than a couple of pounds, Just supporting it with one hand and starting one of the screws with a T-wrench is a piece of cake. Then slide to the other end and start another screw. WoW, it’s now hanging all by itself! I thought about having a NASCAR pit crew tackle mine, but then REALITY set in. 🙂

Looks like you forgot to put the DCT Filter back together before putting the Traxxion Plate back in place.

All of this needed because of some very poor engine case design from none other than Honda themselves. For a motorcycle approaching $30,000 dollars, and well over that for Canadian owners, it should have been Honda coming up with a factory installed road debris impact plate...to protect their poor engineering, that has that exposed shift shaft boss where located, on the engine body. Very poor design, and negligent lack of a factory solution when this vulnerable weakness has put so many Goldwings on the side of the road, and an $8,000 tear down and misery for the owner.
