You should take that filter and cut some of the element out, let it drain off, then inspect for any debris. You don't expect any issues, but it's far cheaper to find one before any sort of failure occurs. At the dealership I work at, we cut every oil filter open. It's a more effective way of monitoring for problems than oil sampling. One senior guy in or technical training department swears by running his oil filters 2x as long as the oil, in his car - 3000 miles on oil, 6000 for a filter. Reason being, the filter actually starts to clean better as it gets plugged up.

I had a boss who would only change the filter every second oil change. Not sure why. We would all stay late on day and change the oil on the 7 big trucks. The other equipment.

Yep, better to be a little low than over full. When I was a younger kid (im 22 now haha) dad went to work and told me before I went out to grind feed to make sure to put oil in the tractor since it was low. Being young and not knowing any different, I filled that sucker up a little too much, actually a lot. When I wound it up, it started squirting oil out around the valve cover gasket. Dad wasn't exactly impressed but I never over filled an engine with oil ever again.
The strap wrench was originally designed for the cartridge type oil filters on cars that did not have a nut at all, Before them you poked a screw driver or something right through it to help take it off
Wes, do you do oil sample analysis? After spending so much time with big bore diesel engines, I found that it really heads off trouble and is very helpful. Maybe your oil supplier, Lucas or your JD dealer can help you with a program. I'm an old timer but believe in them.
The strap wrench is an old design, much older than the Craftsman version. Harbor Freight sells a version of it's own. A three-pack for just a couple of bucks. Very handy to have around.
Wish I had the cartridge type filters on my tractors. I'm getting a collection of used spin filters I don't know what to do with. My BMW has the same type of filter like your 8120. When your done with the filter throw it in the burning barrel.
Don't like to tell a guy what to do but you need to put a empty can of either in injector. Or take can holder of and put in upside-down so you don't get dirt in the and plug it.
Can I suggest a Mobius camera. I have one mounted to a ball cap and it works well when I am running my radio control desert truck and shooting on the range.
I would love to know if that filter would cross reference to a ford 6.0 Powerstroke (international). The filter, cap and even the check valve anti-drain tube look the same (well the tube dose, I can't see the valve)... Just to know I guess.
In my pickup, I'd cheat and change the filter and add a little less than a quart of oil. Okay, I was lazy. I did change the oil, eventually... :-))
How many hour's before every oil change, have a 6630 change engine every 350 hours. Trans 1000 hour's... I work my tractor round 10 to 13 hours a day....
i hate wix filters but your tractor not mine wes! kinda suprising to me with all the JD parts you buy, why you wouldnt get there filters, but there fuel filters do NOT remove water from the fuel, they do not have the membrane inside of them, at least for light duty trucks, cut open one next time,. now im curious if they use them in the tractors
+Steve Holsten YES. When you fill the filter it just means that much less time the engine runs without oil pressure. If you didn't fill it, it would have to fill the filter before going on to lube the engine.
Why are the pleats on the old filter all distorted? That filter looked like shit. How long do you go between oil changes? My Deere tractors, even my R series, keep the oil clean longer than that. Looks like cheap oil and filters to me.
use a different brand filter i know you worship napa filters its a cheap wix filter we have a 68 hp kubota and use a baldwin oil filter it stays clean all year we dont put as many hours as yall i imagine we put 100+ a year. thats rotella 15-40 conventional gets serviced once a year now keep in mind its not as clean as it was put in but its not black like that..
hayden ingram "Cheap" Wix filter as in quality US made...the filter isn't gonna take the color out of the oil, but it will take the harmful particles out...precisely what it is designed to do. That color is characteristic of the engine, as Wes pointed out.
hayden ingram That's not the point of the filter...all oil especially in diesels gets dirty and the filter is still fine for quite a while after that. As Wes pointed out that tractor is particularly dirty...you'll note those Napa's haven't let him down yet.
thats not the point? thats the whole point of a filter to clean and get contaminents out if it wasnt the point no cars would have filters.all oil gets dirty eventually and needs to be changed along with the filter
hayden ingram The darkness is leftover from the combustion process. It's the reason you change oil AND the filter (besides oil breaking down) rather than just the filter to get rid of metal pieces. His oil will look the same (to the human eye) with a balwin or a wix or a amsoil; your kubota is a different beast and it runs a lot less hence the differences you've observed between the two.
You need to hit that thing with a pressure washer now and then, damn thats big money sitting there filthy. We use a fire hose on the dozer when it muddy.
