Just a quick hint i learned, If you watch him when he's looking at the reference he's squinting and that's a very important tool too. If you squint you'd eyes when looking at the reference you are able to ignore the fiddly details and focus more easily on those values.
you are such a good teacher and entertainer at the same time ; this is the only channel that has truly helped me quickly advance my art skills because of how attentive you are to your brain rotted, short attention span audience
Thank you for not trying to be cute. Thank you for getting right to the point. Thank you for the simplicity. Thank you for not playing stupid music, or telling me about your cat, or a long boring intro. I'm so glad I found you!
Did you know... The National Gallery (US and UK) has 4k scans of some works of art and you can zoom in and see the tears left by the artist... I mean every bristle imprint left behind.
@@mariaqtiturrino4641 i cant link it or youtube will remove it but it is https : // www . nga . gov/ collection-search-result.html?sortOrder=DEFAULT&artobj_downloadable=Image_download_available&pageNumber=1&lastFacet=artobj_downloadable
@@mariaqtiturrino4641if you go to the website of the National Gallery of Art, you can look at all the artworks there and download the pictures. I’m not sure if they’re 4k but maybe they are? Idk.
"we're not trying to get perfection here, and if you're tryin you're just gonna hurt yourself" I needed this, thank you for the amazing tutorial! new subscriber here
I spent some inheritance on some supplies to finally start learning to paint at the ripe old age of 40. I purchased oil paints by mistake. I watched some videos of oil painting and was blown away by the realism. But not only that, the way you paint with oil makes sense to me and actually seems far easier than acrylic. I've decided this will be my first lesson.
Young man!” Excuse my calligraphy, my English isn’t my dominant language.!” I have to say I’m 57 years old I always have had the facility to copy since early age and now that I’m trying to include proportions and the anatomy of the body in general I had discovered that I’m not a natural or natural painter or artist. If I could send you some of my imperfect drawings you will understand! I’m disappointed it was fun before not anymore. I understand education is everything, but I m disabled and never had the opportunity to educate myself. You just gave me with your video this hope to paint again and help my mental and physical disorder. Sorry for so much explaining, but I normally keep to myself I consider everyone else normal and smart. Thank you 🙏 really.!”
Jake u should make tutorial/demo vids like this more often !! youve inspired me to take art more seriously and ur advice helps so much because u make everything so simple, straightforward, and yet digestible (ur commentary is also very entertaining lol) thank u dude :D
Jake I bought your drawing course and it has been invaluable, especially as a Lifelong artists, you've made it easy to unlearn bad habits while making the process fun and simple. You are hands down the best art teacher I've come across and I'm beyond grateful you've decided to offer your painting knowledge for free. Thank you for helping me improve my only my skills but my mindset when approaching art.
It’s kind of crazy how few canvas touches it took you to paint this. Every stroke is well calculated and precise. As you say more thinking than painting
As a new painter, I was also using dishwasher soap to clean my brushes but I found that using a bar of white soap to rub the brushes on works better and faster as you're not needing to keep reaching for more dishwasher soap.
Watching your entire daily painting process from start to finish makes me want to pick up whatever and draw something. It's been a long time since I've felt like that. I've sadly come to hate drawing but you are restoring the side of me that enjoyed it one step at a time. Thank you for that
I love art and although I don't plan to practice or get good at oil painting at all, this video is amazing to watch and so therapeutic! As soon as I saw it was over an hour I instantly sat down to watch the whole thing. love it!
Oh my goodness I’m so delighted I actually used your last video to draft my first oil painting and I’m really happy to have more instruction to continue my project thank you ! Your my favorite oil painter to follow your work is truly inspiring ! :)
Youre a savant dude, the way you clarify the proccess and explain your technique scratches my brain so satisfyingly, hows it feel knowing you're destined only to imrpove with age and you're already so skilled, like some art wizard
this is such a great video to watch if its ur first time painting with oils!!! i started almost exactly like this a few years back, and with time i expanded on techniques like glazing and exploring with mediums and solvents like gamsol and stuff. i never realized how great the zorn palette rlly was for beginners. good job!
Yesss I’m so excited!! I love your videos and can’t wait to learn from you. I’m 20 and finally have the confidence to start painting. You make me realize it’s not too late to learn and be bad at something at first
I always thought oil painting was so beautiful and wanted to do it but I was always overwhelmed, this video has definitely helped me see it in a much easier light, thank u
I love the terraria music. I’ve binged all your vids Jake I’m about to bing them again PLEASE make more asap!! I love your stuff. Or stream more often! I just love your content though no pressure. I know good quality takes time.
Awesome video, thanks so much. A tip I read about that seemed a good idea to try was : Instead of wiping your leftover paint on paper towels, some artists scrape the paint into a jar, with a drop of linseed oil added last. By doing this after every session, and almost filling the jar, they then mix the entire jar to create a gray/neutral colour, which can be used later in other paintings. Most paintings have some different greys/neutrals, rather than bright reds, yellows, etc, so these leftover colour mixes can come in handy in some painting projects, ... eg: they might be a great shadow colour on a wall in a landscape, for example.
The parts on what you need to start oil painting are super useful, I've been thinking about starting to oil paint but have been worried about harmful chemicals that I may "need" to use in order to be able to paint such as turpentine but suggesting the linseed oil/walnut oil equivalent is really handy, the other tips provided are also great and I appreciate this video! :)
I so enjoyed your demonstration, Jake. I appreciate your peaceful and accessible teaching style. I am looking forward to seeing more of your work. I am feeling more confident I know how to proceed.
Thank you for all your advice! It has made a huge difference in my approach. I've tried water mixable oils recently and prefer those over regular (the little I've tried of those.) They smell pretty much nothing, have a more creamy texture (for better or worse), dry a bit quicker (but not too fast), and are easier to clean. Good option for everyone who can't stand the feel of sticky, oily textures.
Really appreciate you for putting art in the hands of the people. I want into trades, i always thought that I cant draw. Turns out i just never learned how
Excellent video and instruction!! Please remember to tell people to lay their paper towels or rags with any oil or paint on them flat to dry- its a fire hazard if you throw them away!
Wha a discovery your channel was! Thank you for your work! You got me into painting. I always wanted to try oil painting. Any painting, but oil was always resonating with me whenever I was visiting museums or churches. I will definitely have a go now! Thank you.
I’ved used watercolours for years and have really wanted to start with oils, but the idea of learning it seemed so overwhelming… this video came around at the perfect time and you explain things really simply! :D
Love your content man, keep up the good work. Also, if you haven't already, I would love to see you paint Johannes Vermeer's famous "Girl with a Pearl Earring". I know you absolutely make a masterpiece out of this one. You've inspired me so much, and I love what you're doing here for the community. You're gonna make it really big one of these days. After the first video I watched of yours, I was completely hooked. Keep it up Jake! 👍
i just spent a little over a hundred dollars worth of a few oil painting essentials to start this. painting is such a beautiful thing and i can't wait to become great at it. glad i stumbled across this video. you have such a thorough way of explaining things and carrying your audience through the process without fabricating how the journey of it really is. you just gained a new subscriber/follower! 🤎
What in the anti capitalism is this how is this free, as an artist that's the best tutorial I've seen so far on oil painting. You're now my favourite creator !!
Lots of great information here. For a small nitpick, Sargent was not an academic painter, he used a direct painting method. Academic painters used a variety of indirect methods so they did glaze and paint in color layers over a dead layer (either a grisaille or an ebauche). Think Bouguereau, Gerome, etc, all 19th century painters. One could make an argument that painting in layers is actually easier than alla prima, since you have an initial layer where you don't worry about color, only valures, but that's another discussion. Keep up the great work! I'm really enjoying your content.
Amazing video, love your explanations of art, and the way you describe the different techniques and methods. Also as someone who doesn't paint, and only really use digital art software, you showing even how to clean the equipment was nice to see. I would like to suggestion/request, you make a video, where you breakdown a painting, describing colors/paints used, the different brush strokes, visible mistake corrections, what layers came first, basically everything you can see that the artist chose to do. You talk about looking at the art a lot, which obviously makes sense, but in some cases, if you don't know what to look for you will only see the painting, not the technique. I know you do kinda do this in each video, but a video where that is the soul purpose, could also be insightful.
This is a truly amazing video. Your ability to teach and convey ideas and understanding smoothly while also staying engaging is truly masterful. The way that you reassure viewers away from demeaning ideas and redirect us to thoughts of hope and motivation is kind and gentle, enhancing your word's effects by tenfold. The information you provide in this video is very valuable, the video seems a lot more loaded with great tips and info than others while still being easy and fun to digest. I have many more thoughts and praise for every facet of this video, but I am unable to meaningfully convey my thoughts and feelings into this comment. When I did have the words bubble up in my mind, I couldn't rip myself away from the video to comment as it is so exceptionally well made that I just couldn't pause for even a moment. I think you have done a great job with this and I hope that you continue to get the recognition you deserve throughout and beyond the rest of your career in this space. You do it unlike any other. I am truly regretful about the quality of my writing skills and praise as I was unable to honour your work. (I know I was glazing but you deserved it.) (I know it might seem hard to take this seriously with my name, im so sorry!)
I really love the more educational videos from you. The gaming videos are also nice. Also I'd like to see more videos on individual painters you like/find interesting like the ones you did in the beginning of this channel. Really appreciate your content dude🙃 I also really appreciate you having great sense of beauty which is rather lacking more often than not in other people these days. You're doing a great work🫡
Very helpful video, you can explain very well and the humour make it very enjoyable to watch. 🙂 I've also found that oil painting is pretty simple to start with. I mean, any art technique can be made more complicated if necessary. I have a book like this with different painting techniques for beginners, and the author decided to include oil painting in the book instead of acrylic and advertised it as very beginner-friendly. I think that was also the reason why I was more afraid of using acrylic paints because it was such an unknown creature for me.
Thank you!!! Very very enlightening and relieving to hear and see you skull and your take on painting! Plus you saved me oodles n oodles of time using a newly mixed values to transition "turn" from shadow to light instead of manually trying to blend two abrupt values already on my piece!!! I saw you say n do this and I thought, "Duh Ralph to myself" 😅! I really need some classes already; the whole deal of not looking, thinking and painting all at once just threw a monkey wrench in my dysfunction too, like it seems to apply to all life facets... finally your so inspiring and upbeat, you kept me riveted with you delivery, like when I started this video I figured I would fall asleep in ten, but all of a sudden it was over and I wanted to more more more!
Hello from the UK. Thank's for this Jake, great video....just about to start painting it now.... a few weeks ago doing an oil painting in a life drawing class, I started with a charcoal sketch, I was berated and told what the hell was I doing using charcoal, I was told to take it off and start only with paint!!! it was so refreshing to see you lay a charcoal sketch down first, I guess no right or wrong way when starting? Couldn't stop watching Tron in the background!!!! Oh also....I use a tennis ball cut in half for cleaning brushes with dishsoap, just hold the half ball in your hand with the soap in, I find it a easier and less messy.
Not sure why people hold that strange stance. Literally everyone in 19th century used charcoal sketches before painting. Even the most free painters like Duran and Sargent would frequently use vine charcoal sketches. The basis of every painting is a great drawing!
I dont even paint but I loved this video. I struggle to feel relaxed but I really like the commentary and watching the painting from start to finish. Ur the modern bob ross lmao.
This is a great video. Thanks! I was going to subscribe but it seems like this is your only instructional video? You should make more like this. You have a great banter style and explain things really well.
After painting for a few years I've noticed that every single painting I do in the early stages will always hit what I call "the ugly stage" were you look at the canvas and it looks awful and it's a point when many beginners usually quit. Just try and ignore that and push past it and you may just surprise yourself. Just don't give up on yourself, if I can paint a portrait you can too and I'm just an uneducated moron lol.
