OIL PRESSURE Gauge Repair DISASTER

I've been meaning to fix the oil pressure gauge in my 1976 Corvette for quite some time, but removing the gauge cluster is such a PITA, I've been avoiding that project.
But today was the right time, or so I thought.
In hindsight, doing ANY big job in a 100+ degree garage is foolish, but it's obvious my parents raised a fool so I decided to go ahead with it.
It actually went fairly well, for the most part, until I started testing things before buttoning everything up. And it's a good thing I did because the "new" oil pressure gauge worked even worse than the original, so I tried using a different resistor and that helped a little, but not enough, so I reinstalled the original gauge with the "new" resistor and I am basically back to Square One!
Oh, and I managed to slice the tip of my finger which now hurts pretty bad as I use this keyboard. And then, after everything was reinstalled, I realized I failed to plug the windshield wiper switch, so half of the console had to come apart again.
When it rains...
Thank you for watching! 🙂👍🏻

I would expect high oil pressure at initial startup due to the viscosity being thicker until the oil comes to temp. You may also want to try replacing the oil sender unit as well. It’s highly unlikely that you have 2 bad gauges. With everything else being equal, the only thing left in the troubleshooting equation is the oil pressure sender.

I’ve replaced everything I can think of. Motor’s been rebuilt approx 24k mikes ago so I’m thinking it must be this “new” gauge I found on Craigslist. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I wish they would've stayed with that design until 1982, my 79 has a flimsy printed circuit on it. Great job showing the process! I'm going to have to try and fix my fuel gauge, I've been measuring it with a stick since I got it, I hope it's in that printed circuit.

Yeah, they also used those printed circuits on third gen Firebirds. They worked well … until they didn’t. I think the ‘77 Vettes had a half-and-half dash and it looked ok. Then they changed it into that rectangular style. Not my favorite. I also never really cared for the 78-on door panels. Oh well. That’s progress for ya. 😆

1) You need AC in the garage. 😀 2) Not much to add to what everyone has already posted except this is why I hesitate to own older vehicles; there's always something, but that could just be me talking. I know the older cars can be just as reliable, if not more, then newer vehicles and are more simple and easier to fix for the non-mechanic.

I do need a/c in the garage. 🥵 Also worth mentioning is that these gauges are non-precision instruments and oftentimes, nothing more than idiot lights with needles. Having said that, old cars can usually be fixed on the side of the road. You leave me stranded with a Tesla and I’d probably electrocute myself. ⚡️🔌🔋

@@76vette GOOD point...pretty much ANY of the new vehicles today; if you break down, it's AAA or bust. Don't even bother opening the hood.

I got the same thing in my 76 with original gauge. Maybe the 76 engines are very strongs ! 😁

Or oil pressure gauges are not very reliable. lol 😆

Pegging out is no good . 60 to 80 with molasses oil at start up is about right with decent engine tolerances. As for the LED's; tried those on one of my other cars. They last maybe a year, then randomly going bad. I've had OE 1976 bulbs that are still working in my 76. Hate the hassle of changing them out all the time. I stick with incandescent although LED's are brighter and look much nicer.
@76vette
@76vette 2 года назад
Also, LEDs don’t get hot like incandescent bulbs, which I consider a safety issue when you touch a regular bulb that is hotter than magma. lol 😆 And YES, LEDs make the gauges look super nice.

Have you checked the wire to the pressure sensor? I know you replaced the sensor.
@76vette
@76vette 2 года назад
Not really other than visually whenever I unplugged the sending unit. After all, the gauge works. Just not very well. Oh, and I also replaced the engine wiring harness.

Always something. My 74 is having a similar OP gauge issue. I put in new sender unit, too. And I thought gauge was good until I tapped it and the reading changed. Hmm.

How you remember where they go to connect back the wires ?
@76vette
@76vette 2 года назад
The terminals usually just fit one gauge, and all the light gray wires are for the dash lights, for example, plus the back of the instrument panel has writing that indicates the wire colors, so it's actually fairly easy. You just have to take your time, so all the wires reach the panel without overstretching. Thank you for watching! 🙂👍

One day I hope to figure it out. Till then high oil pressure is better than the alternative. lol 😆 Thank you for watching! 😊👍🏻

I had the same experience with the AC Delco replacement gauge - worse than the original. I reverted to the original gauge. Mine reads the same as yours.

One of these days I may try an aftermarket gauge to see if there’s any difference. 😊👍🏻
