Great discussion Masako! I don't mind Gohan having a flaw or two, it makes him more relatable, that he's not perfect! Honestly, I hope Toriyama and Toyotaro do that with the other characters, especially the next gen characters (Trunks, Goten, Pan, Bulla, Uub, etc.)

Personally I don’t understand why people think that *any* character couldn’t be written as a main character. All it takes is a good writer. What kinds of motivations does each character have? What are their personal struggles? What is their outlook? What do they enjoy? What do they not enjoy? What is important to them and what is not important to them. I absolutely do not think the question is *if* Gohan could be the main character, because he certainly could be, literally any character could be. It’s not the character. It’s the writing. And even more than the writing, it’s the formula that’s the real culprit at the base issues with the series as it stands today. As I see it, Dragon Ball is stuck between two formulas. It’s either that there is some kind of universe-level BS villain that wants to destroy everything or take over everything (the same motivations for pretty much every villain ever, at this point)… or a tournament. That’s it.

@@Lord_Of_Night exactly, thank you. All it takes is for someone to make the right decisions for the character in a story, and it could be compelling. It’s all in the talent behind the IP that matters most, in my opinion. Like one thing I think people need to stop thinking is the idea that Dragon Ball can’t exist without Goku. As much as I love the character and knowing how impactful he was to the series, the future could (and eventually should) continue without him. Or at the very least there should be spin-offs. Because the series is called “Dragon Ball,” not “Goku,” and it’s time to see the Dragon Ball world in new perspectives, as it would keep it fresh for a lot longer.

If you want my honest opinion, I'm under the strong belief that Dragon Ball should go the multiple protagonists route. You know they're not going to completely get rid of certain characters, so it would make sense to give us more instances where everyone gets time to shine. I pretty much accepted the fact that they're never going to truly replace Goku and Vegeta so instead I think they should go down this route that way one, people don't get tired of certain characters, 2, I guess other characters time to shine, and three it gives the fandom more to appreciate from the franchise. Dragon Ball super superhero being a movie where they barely focus on Goku and Vegeta was a huge risk and though not as successful as Broly, it still got results. And it could make Dragon Ball even more appealing to multiple audiences going forward.

I only now realized that gohan has the same character development every time. During the cell saga e learned that he had to fight to protect those he loved. During the buu saga he leaned that he couldn't slack off and had to fight to protect the ones he loved. After resurrection F he learned he had to keep fighting to be able to protect the ones he loved. And during super hero he learned he cant stop training and has to fight to protect the ones he loves

I don’t think he really made such a resolution in the Buu Arc, aside from wishing to catch up with Goku and Vejita for the immediate threat. In RoF he does make that resolution and he sticks to it for the next 17 or si months to the US Arc where he was prepared enough.

While I love Beast's design, one thing I wish Super Hero did was have the Gammas' fighting style remind Gohan of how he actually had fun fighting as Saiyaman, and being in the suit hypes him up to Goku and Vegeta's level. Ultimate Gohan was meant to be him not needing to transform anymore, so why not reincorporate that, instead of needing his hair a different colour and an aura surronding him, all Gohan needs to fight at his max is put on a costume and do some poses

Beyond culture, it’s also generational gap. Dragonball is almost 40 years old. That is alot to consider. Regarding Gohan, I think more Toriyama wasn’t sure what to do with him that wasn’t retreading what Goku went through.

yamcha was actually extremely competent until the 22 budokai tenkaichi tournament. guess toriyama didnt really know what to do with the character basically used him as a red shirt character,to show how powerful the antagonist of the respective arc is. It was especially evident in the fight against tien where his opponent broke his leg. In the 23 Budokai tenkaichi he was humiliated by a Kami in disguise.

Yeah; I'm still enjoying Gohan like this, instead of just being either another Goku-lite. Feels like he's become his own man now; even if he's pretty much the biggest nerd in DB. Plus; I'd argue Gohan has a lot more going for him than, say, his little brother. Goten has and remains boring.

Very interesting on how being the Son of Goku and the weight of those expectations shaping out the type of fighter gohan is. Also no doubt a hint of seriousness from training with piccolo at age 5

DB at this point should be about family. Goku and Vegeta have a goal that's really out there but only a matter of time, Gohan won life, and I'm ready to see Trunks and Goten get some time to shine for character arcs. The rest of the characters have settled and should be there for slice of life and big moments, but they can no longer push the plot. Let Gohan be a dad in some comedy episodes and let Trunks get the story he deserves. Gohan's only flaw is that a fully self actualized person needs to constantly be out through the ringer so a writer can satisfy insatiable fans.

I like that idea. I think also keeping the series a little more grounded with “slice of life” content and appropriately adding in the action and threats to each individual character would widen the scope of the series greatly. Not every conflict needs to be world-ending, and I think from the get-go, Super starting out with power leveled of literal gods was a mistake. Yeah, they’ve always been around, but the power scaling does not need to be so unnecessarily high, the scales don’t need to be so dramatic, either. The characters need to be relatable to be likable, in my opinion, and - again, my opinion, it really feels like Goku is hardly a character anymore at this point. He’s just so far gone in relatability, for me to like him as he is now.

I enjoy Gohan. He's not the protagonist of the entire series. That is what Goku and Vegeta are. However, as one of the major stars, Gohan still shines. Every time he fails he realizes what he's doing wrong and tries to work through it. From Childhood to Adulthood he's had his own set of trials.

What is it with the Son family and not having a balanced life style? You’ve got Goku who doesn’t work (even though he’s a farmer) and is constantly training, which isn’t bad on it’s own, but that’s no excuse to ignore his responsibilities as a husband father. Then there’s Gohan who works and cares for his family, which is good, yet it’s no excuse to slack off in training, knowing that Frieza is still alive and eventually coming back to earth. The only one who’s somewhat got it all sorted out is Goten.

Gohan doesn't even care about his family all that much. He doesn't pick up Pan from school and relies on Piccolo to do it while he studies ants, and the entire point of Super Hero was that Pan had to fake being in danger to motivate him. And then fans have the nerve to wonder why fan stories roll with the "someone needs to be in danger for Gohan to power up". That's literally the ONLY reason he powers up.

I like the idea that Goku skews too much towards his training and Gohan too much towards his personal/work life while Goten manages to strike a solid balance between the two, training and fighting for fun while actively socialising and getting an education. The only way Goten is lacking right now is maturing a bit so he takes his life a little more seriously.

Honestly, this video makes it feel like Goten would be the better choice. I mean he has the shadow of his super powerful brother and his legendary father. But Goten doesn’t really stand out. Not to mention he definitely the underdog in the Son family, so rooting for him wouldn’t be hard. It also would help break up his joined-at-the-hip state with Trunks. Kind of like a reverse of what they attempted with GT.

Gohan is supposed to be a reluctant hero. Meaning, he only fights when forced to. He is a geek by nature and that's fine. The problem is, a lot of fans self-insert with Gohan and change his fundamental charistics.

Gohan really needed a Ken to his Ryu. A Friend and/or rival that Gohan would have to relate to and to a degree, especially if they were friends, rely on to give him purpose. Much as Ryu looked the Ken to keep him training, until the Dark Hadou Saga derailed that. Otherwise Gohan was just the first of the "Extra Saiyans", they did not need to exist and their only contributing attribute is they were Saiyans. Gohan's "Ken" does not even have to be, probably shouldn't be, Saiyan or Human as, on the roster of characters, Gohan is surprisingly the only character HIS AGE, Piccolo and Videl notwithstanding. Someone Gohan just ends up having to deal with and strangely looking forward to their next meeting with ever increasing fervor. A fighter who complements Gohan in the same ways Ken complements Ryu. While the notion that this might be someone who adds a corner to a very fan-fictiony "Gohan+Videl+'One' love triangle", someething I want to ruin like a real Spider-Man Fan wanted "One More Day", someone who can only really just a friend and/or rival is the best way to go.

I agree Gohan flaws that are a detriment to his character are that he’s to passive,cockiness,lack of responsibility and can be to focused on his research on insects so much that he neglects his family. I don’t think Gohan is fit to be the new main character. I would rather see Goten or Pan be the new main character of Dragonball. Goten is adventurous, carefree, playful and action oriented and he really takes after Goku. Pan really takes after Goku and loves fighting and martial arts. I would like to see Dragonball Super take the Dragonball Online route with Gohan with him becoming the professor of martial arts and ki and writing his book on Ki control Groundbreaking Science which would unleash a martial arts revolution on Earth.That would be a great way to end Gohan’s character arc.

Imo a character without flaws is bad but Gohan has flaws THAT make him bad. He ignores threats, can't get himself to stay focused, isn't very smart to be honest and is just a total moron. His entire character from Saiyan to Cell Saga was thrown into the bin and now he is the "smart pacifist". He is not though. He is simply ignorant and uninteresting. And that he repeats his flaws over and over again might make him more realistic but just not likeable. Praising his flaws like that isn't good, at least that's how I see it. And I am very much sure that Toriyama didn't intend these flaws. In the Buu saga, Gohan already acted very immature in many situations but he was still somewhat on track. Now he is just immature with the bad taste of not doing anything. In the previous sagas he learned to be more calculating, smart and foresighted. All of that is gone now. Additional salt in the wound is that he gets power ups for nothing. The beast transformation is just bad. It comes out of nowhere and is just a copy of the SSJ2 transformation, even if it's a tiny bit more logical as it is more on a personal route. Piccolo's form is logical, it is tied to Namekian lore while beast is the ass pull of ass pulls. And that he does nothing, barely trains but gets everything cause he has "potential" is another huge flaw, especially combined with that flawed character of him just ignoring threats. Why would someone who is that stubborn be rewarded with a new form?

To be sure, post-RoF he has kept up with the protecting the family thing. Getting Shenlong to cure Pan of a fever. Saving Pan and the city (and maybe the world) from an alien parasite known for world-wrecking, and doing his part in saving his family (and the universe) from getting erased.

It’s more that he doesn’t have the same drive for fighting like Goku or Vegeta, viewing it as a chore. And given what he grew with, it makes sense. He never got the sense of growth or self-gratification that Goku got because it was always a fight to survive for Gohan. That’s probably left quite an impact on him and it’s like also why Chichi isn’t a fan of fighting as well. Had Gohan’s formative experience with fighting been with say Master Roshi, he’d likely view fighting with a more positive view.

I think toriyama atleast in the time of Z flat out couldnt write gohan as the MC. Ignoring goku even the supporting cast has this inconsistantcy, Piccollo, and Tien for example beginning of android arc, everyone wants the challenge of a true fight. second set of androids about to be released, everyones incredibley active in dealing with the threat and preventing there awakening. And acting like Vegeta is insane for letting them wake up. Its done so plot can happen. At this point however the story has kind of settled on fixed points. Gokus now just one character trait, Vegetas a genuine character but kinda too grumpy?, Gohan and piccollo or cool ngl, but now the story atleast makes problems happen around them rather than because their dumb.

I agree. Personally I think the reason that Gohan didn’t work for Toriyama was because of the lack of any supervisors/editors in the Buu arc. Toriyama had free reign, and the Buu arc is the messiest part of Z. It’s mainly just a theory, but his editors in my opinion really helped guide Toriyama throughout the rest of the original run.

I used to hate the idea of him becoming a main character but now I think I'd only hate it if he's the only main character because super so far has been set on Goku and Vegeta and rn their in the middle of their paths to their goal so I'd see it as an awful move to just point to Gohan. (Also watch the review on another guy's channel where he details in hilarious fashion how hard Gohan got his ass whopped by Buutenks like it wasn't even close. And I like how they pointed that out in super)

Since his early childhood basically every real fight ended in death of either his relatives or friends. I'm not surprised with him in buu saga, it does seem like he has trauma with fighting, every time being reminded of so muuuuuuch. He really does hate fighting after all. And his sayaman? His unconcious way to quiet down the guilt and pain of this trauma. Think about it, humans are representing the same level of threat to him as ants to us. This is still as far from fighting as he can force himself out of it, despite the minimal pressure. This makes him very relatable and interesting. Although, this plot line does need more attention than just slapping him again and again. And for the god's sake take him to psychologist already! Mah boy needs help. And hugs. I would hug him soooo muuch. It's started for him way earlier than dor Goku, and way darker.

Idk personally as much as i like Gohan, I think i like Gohan more when he doesn't have to fight. He doesn't want to fight and hates having to do it and frankly with Goku and vegeta always around, he doesn't really have to fight. Tbh when i saw him in super playing with Pan, it made me happy that he got to have a family life as opposed to future Gohan who got forced into the Goku roll and didn't get to experience a normal life. I also think Gohan being always in his books can also be blamed on Chi Chi as well since most of Gohan's childhood was buried in books and studying. But honestly i'm just hoping that this movie doesn't negatively effect Gohan in a way where, in the future i don't like him. Like I guess i'm happy that Gohan fans will get to see him get stronger again and do stuff but idk if i have to see him fighting, i'd rather see him being the Great Saiyaman and protecting the town with Videl again over him going to other planets/universes to defeat the new villain of the week

I have always felt like that Gohan should be the main character. To show that intelligent characters and people are not only worthy of leading but also show respect over his moronic father who indeed isn’t a good example to me at all. I rather have someone who is intelligent and capable as I feel people need more of the smart people at the top than a idiot

I actually like gohan that way He actually has character development, like take Spider-Man as an example, Spider-Man would’ve been a family man that has a beautiful wife, we would’ve seen mayday parker in the comics, if it weren’t for one more day of course, but I wouldn’t want gohan to train constantly like his dad, he would’ve been goku but if he was smarter, i’m fine with gohan training again but not constantly.

The one big difference is that Gohan had to be thrown into the fray by comparison to Goku. A good example is beginning of Z and the Buu saga. Goku went after Gohan when Raditz kidnapped him, sure, with the help of Piccolo. But it was genuine. Gohan had to be blackmailed by Videl in order to really get back into the fray. Sure, you could say Saiyaman is sort of "in the fray" but he didn't take it seriously. Hell, even in the beginning of GT it showed that Gohan wasn't really there to help raise Pan. He had been helping Bulma.

Im hoping they do something with Gohan, because in my opinion he’s at an all time low. He is currently my least favorite Dragon Ball Character, and he’s just there. He doesn’t earn his power ups, and i find him boring and most of the time unnecessary. The only arc where his inclusion was some what natural was the TOP Arc.

Honestly the Original Dragonball is still my favorite. I was kind of disappointed when from genuine story telling to more of a focus on the combat scenes. I'm sorry to burst your bubbles but, Dragonball fight scenes aren't really that great. Especially when compared to franchises like one punch man. Too me at least it feels too short changes because they made their focus on making the combat look fast instead of genuinely interesting. Honestly it almost made it feel like the resented having the combat scenes and were trying to get through them. Then they hang on awkward pauses in combat to pad out the run time because they didn't do much interesting other than the typical "teleport a pace punchy kicky fit teleport and repeat. I'm not saying the story is bad mind you, but i don't really feel like the caliber of combat they present balances the quality of their story. But, to end this story on a positive note. I absolutely LOVE what Team FourStar has done with the Material and to this day is my favorite way to watch DBZ and beyond lol. Also, If the Opportunity ever arose. I'd be a dream come true to get a full re-dub of DBZ+ to be re-voiced for the English version.
