Joe Morton, the actor who plays Miles Dyson has, in my opinion, one of if not the best death scenes in cinema. It is dramatic enough without being over acting. You literally can feel the life leaving him and he still tries to not kill the swat guys. I find myself comparing many other death scenes to this and while they may be more impactful or emotional, just for straight acting chops I have to give it to Joe.

What set The Terminator apart from other slasher films was that you got to see the monster in repose. You don't see Freddy Kreuger looking for weapons or Jason Voorhees patching up damage after an unsuccessful encounter with the protagonists. Those other slasher monsters have a more cameo role in their own films because the camera never lingers upon them like they do with the Terminator.

Agreed 100%. And the biggest parts that push it over the top for me - the music and the camera shift. The "heartbeat of the machine" theme they gave to Arnie's Terminator...all other sound stops, just this cold metallic rhythmic hammering as he comes into frame as we switch to Sarah's POV. Until then, the scene was in 3rd person, watching Sarah kick ass and enact her escape plan. Then it takes a hard right into one of her nightmares, and we're pulled right in with her. Doesn't help that he's wearing almost the exact same outfit, glasses and all (since he wasn't wearing them in the beginning), as when the Terminator in T1 stormed the police station and she witnessed him massacre so many people firsthand (and funnily enough, also the first place where she met the psychiatrist).

Yes, and it adds a level of vulnerability to the otherwise so kick-ass character of Sarah Conner of part two. She isn't this unflapable person who has been there, done that, and gets totally jaded. No, she still fights her inner demons, every single day. She expresses her fear, gets totally irrational and emotional about it, yet her son, the one person she absolutely NEEDS to survive, pulls her out of her fugue.

The first Terminator was practically an independent film. Cameron shot scenes in the dead of night, never got permits, made everything on a shoestring budget, but the film was wildly popular when it came out. 1986 comes and Cameron directs the sequel to the classic sci-fi horror Alien and it's a HUGE hit, practically printing money! Cameron goes to the studio and says he would like to film a follow-up to The Terminator and the suits were more than happy to throw the money his way! It was the most expensive film ever made in 1991 (the first to break the $100 million barrier). And fortunately Terminator 2 becomes another huge financial success. Unfortunately Cameron has had a love/hate relationship with the major studios, and when he went on to produce and direct The Abyss, the studio didn't share his vision of a nearly three hour film and demanded he cut out at least an hour. Cameron was reluctant to do so, but the studio pressured him saying no one is going to sit still for that long in the theater, so he gave in and cut out almost the entire ending of the movie, which resulted in it being a box office flop. If you ever get around to watching The Abyss (and I recommend you do), make sure it's the extended director's cut that adds in all the missing plot details that help the film make so much more sense!

A very few movies I distinctly remember premier night at the theater. This is one. The overwhelming energy in the audience that night could be summed up as a constant "WOW". The effects look a bit dated today, but they were bleeding edge at time of the premier, and the twists throughout the film kept us constantly guessing. The moment when liquid metal terminator moved through the prison bars was the moment the audience gasped, realizing this terminator could act in ways we couldn't predict, and he did. T2 was definitely a huge improvement on T1, and the best of the series. T1, as you've noted, was a great film hampered by dated effects. I've always wondered if they gave it the George Lucas "Star Wars" treatment, applying new effects later, if the film would be an improvement.

By the way, one thing in the theatrical cut that is a throwback to something that was cut out is when Arnold smiled because of the minigun. In a deleted scene that you're probably aware of, John tried to get Arnold to smile with some dubious results. The latter scene was cut while the former remained. @rbrtck in the Director's Cut or Extended Version, they shut the Terminator down for a bit to flip the CPU so it can go from "read only" to "read and write". With it being set on "read and write" the terminator was able to learn and adapt and blend in with humans better. Because that scene exists and it is canon in my mind, it makes sense that he would say, "I need a vacation." Also, it would also make sense that he learned not to obey John's command at the end and value the cause.

Usually such rifles require two hands to reload each shot as the next round is chambered by "cocking" the level attached to the trigger guard. They couldn't shoot the mirror scene because the cameramen were in view so Linda knew her sister worked out just like she did, and suggested that they work on the scene with her sister and it worked out well! It was as if she was really Linda's reflection!

Hey Natalie, fun fact: The helicopter chase under the overpass was a real stunt conceived of by James Cameron. Chuck Tamburro, a legendary Hollywood helicopter pilot claimed it could be done but the crew scheduled to shoot it literally would not shoot the scene because of how dangerous it was. As a result, James Cameron personally flew the stunt with Tamburro and one stunt driver in the car, because no one else would shoot it for him!

The other scene with the motorcycle and helicopter was filmed with the cycle and a dummy I think launching out of the building, with a cable attached to stop it in mid flight. Then they had to remove the cable on each individual frame of the film by hand. Way back in the day, there was a trade book called Cinefex that went through all of the effects in the movie. Loved reading all that stuff.

The finger well has to be made bigger, otherwise the weight of the weapon does bad things to your hand. It was done to show that the terminator can do things humans can't, and to put something badass in the movie.

he could have suggested continuing the project but making adjustments to prevent it from going haywire again. That might not work, but it's worth thinking about at least because if the technology exists someone is going to make it, might as well have a hand in it's creation and steer it the right way. It seems like you watched the theatrical cut. In the Director's cut, the scene where they're taking the bullets out of Arnold in the garage, also has a scene where they open his head and reset his systems. Skynet explicitly put in inhibitor protocols to prevent any terminators from becoming fully self-deterministic. It didn't want them having free will. John and Sarah deactivate that protocol by resetting him, and that's why he seems to slowly "get it" afterward. He grows beyond his programming and begins to understand humanity. And that's the reason he chooses to sacrifice himself. He personally comes to understand why humanity must be protected, and why Skynet must be stopped.

I don't think that scene actually works in favor of the message as much as you guys think. At the end Sarah says that if a machine could learn from humans, then they could too. It means that if people actually worked together, they could achieve greatness. It implies the T-101 learned from humans because this was the first time a terminator worked with humans instead of against them. He always had the capacity to learn, but he really learned from humanity when he lived among them. To change it to "they just flipped a switch to give him self-awareness" is just dumb.

Miles Dyson is one of my favorite characters in movies. He's extremely heroic without having any of the powers or abilities of the people and machines around him. He gladly sacrifices his life's work when he learns that it will lead to so much death. He dies to see the future prevented. And when he dies he *even still* finds a way to be even more heroic by doing what he can to not kill the very men who just killed him, because he knows that they're innocent. He's the best character in the movie and I love that the TV series made his son grow up to know how great his father was

At 25:18 what you're talking about is "agonal breathing." It sometimes happens as the body is shutting down. It's an abnormal pattern of breathing and brainstem reflex characterized by gasping, labored breathing, occurring right before death, triggered by severe hypoxia or anoxia. T2 was the first time I'd ever seen it, and then saw more of it in the Army than I'd ever wanted to. Of course, the caveat is that the patient is virtually never going to be able to vocalize in a controlled manner during this stage, but I don't think the director thought that most viewers would be able to see his breathing and know that he was about to die, so they made that concession for the sake of the movie.
