Interesting 🧐 Do you wash the grill or this expensive cooking machine 😂 often from the outside?? Like does it need to be washed?? 🤔
@RoadandReel
@RoadandReel Год назад
Haha, it needs to be washed and I usually clean it with some dawn dish soap and water, but I wanted this video to be in the actual condition. Also, I'm planning a video on how to clean up and service it, so I need it this way to make the video. 😁

I bought one of these used. Somebody used the side burner as a lifting handle. The gas side was rusting out, but still intact. I can guess it was used on high for far to long. As a rule, I never use high on propane because it can get too hot even at low. My advice is, treat this grill as if it only had 2 burners, and mainly use the center to protect the sides. I have no doubt some have blindly used the clean setting to cook. I think these should have 2 burners for the size. The people that had it used the smoke chamber for charcoal. They didn't use the charcoal grate and shield. I always use a charcoal basket. I made mine with 1/2 inch expanded metal from a bigbox store. After all those years it was used, the igniter still worked, but the actual spark contacts were out of alignment and surfaces were dirty so it wasn't sparking right. It always surprises people that some igniters use batteries such as this one. A solution to prevent temp gauge fading and water vapor is to make foil covers for them. Wrap enough foil around it to keep wind from blowing it off and unwrap it enough to remove it for reuse later. I also found it better to remove the grease tray from the front. All it takes is needle nose pliers and some simple tab bending. They could have made this grill better, but didn't. If those burner tents fail. Some guy on ebay makes real stainless versions that won't rust out.

@RoadandReel Год назад
Yeah, the metal on these could be better and I think the quality may have went down a little after I got mine. I know price definitely went up. I forgot about mine and left the three burners on one night until it ran out of propane and everything still works and no holes. That one surprised me a bit. Even the drip grates are still good.

I have an electric smoker now I use 3 times a week but I wanted to upgrade. These are $600 brand new but the store in my town let this ok longhorn sit outside all season and now it has surface rust in the front. I asked for discount they called me back and said they would sell it to me for $390. I can clean up the rust and season it with tallow or Veg oil. Is that a good deal? Any thoughts would help! Thanks!
@RoadandReel
@RoadandReel Год назад
@@1stRowBillsFan I think that's a good deal. It's probably just surface rust and should clean up fine.
@batforjustice
@batforjustice Год назад
@@1stRowBillsFan It's a good deal compared to what they originally wanted. Locally one just sold for $100 just a couple seasons old. Also compared to the regular Highland I got mine new for $180 clearance a few years ago. Those flame tents go for about $50. Only one person makes them on Ebay. If you take care of it then it will last.

Recently snagged one of these for $FREE.99 ! Other than a bit of surface rust in the charcoal chamber and fire box, I need to replace the rear propane burner brackets. Cleaning it up now, I think I can get it looking almost new. Hoping to season it tonight. Will be using the charcoal/smoker side in the meantime, can't wait for that 1st cook!

I've had mine for a couple years and it's ok not terrible. My complaints are the grease trap is a terrible idea and i haven't thought of a way to change it yet, and the charcoal/smoke side I wish was a little bigger since the smoke box is the same size as the cook chamber.. but they make baffels that will block off some heat or you can wrap a grate with aluminum foil and let it drape down to shield some of the heat. your ignitor should just be a battery that's probably dead.
@RoadandReel
@RoadandReel Год назад
I agree with you on the charcoal/smoke side. I do wish it was a little bigger. I recently swapped out the battery and still nothing. I think I'll just replace it. I like your aluminum foil idea and I'm going to try that, thanks!

Looks like you switched to or added a pellet grill from seeing your recent Nexgrill video. Would like to hear more about that decision and if you feel the Longhorn no longer suited your needs.
@RoadandReel
@RoadandReel 5 месяцев назад
I did. It's just an addition, but I like the ease of use. This month, I've smoked two briskets, a tri tip, tons of wings burgers and sausages. I like how I can come in after work and fire it right up and walk away. The Oklahoma Joe's still has it's place and the pellet grill will never replace the smoke flavor I get from the offset, but it takes me a good hour or so of fire prep before a smoke and I have to tend to it about every hour or so. It's fun during a social gathering, but overnight smokes are a chore with the Oklahoma Joe's. The flavor it gives is great, but time is the biggest factor.

I've had mine for a year, and I don't really have an issue with quality, but honestly it was never that great as a smoker. I have problems with temperature stability. Mostly it wants to run hot. I made a perfect turkey breast but had to use a split to hold the upper door open an inch. I regret buying a swiss army knife when my favorite feature, is the worst performing one. I would've preferred buying a combo grill and a separate smoker.
@RoadandReel
@RoadandReel Год назад
I hear exactly what you're saying. I'm near that point and considering a dedicated smoker and just using this one for high heat smokes. It makes amazing smoked burgers, pork belly, sausages, etc. but it's a constant chore when doing anything over 4-5 hours. It was a great way for my wife to get used to smoked meats and now that she likes it a little more, I see a new dedicated offset smoker in the future.

@@RoadandReel funny thing about timing. I just smoked a whole brisket on it yesterday, and it performed a lot better. Either it's getting broken in, or I'm getting used to it.
@RoadandReel
@RoadandReel Год назад
@@scottgalbraith7461 once you figure it out, it's a lot easier. I smoked a 16lb brisket for my first long smoke and that gave me enough time to figure it out. The next brisket I did was a big 21 pounder and I was able to really dial it in. It's still nothing like a larger heavy-wall offset, but it does its job and performs well. It just takes a little work. I'm glad it worked out for you. I did some ribs and a tritip yesterday and they both came out phenomenal.
