I was 6yrs old at this. 1st time i watched Texas An Oklahoma play. I loved the wishbone an fell in love with the Sooners. Been a fan ever since. Thank u Dad may you rest in peace. For asking me to the game. One of my fondest memories.I love you an miss you.
I am a life long Nebraskan, NU grad and was a boy in 71. I grew up rooting against the sooners but you must admit, these highlights capture the feared OU wishbone very well. Thank God the HUSKERS found a way to stop it a few times
Thanks for the memories Jack. I remember watching the OU/Texas game of 1971. It seems like just yesterday. God bless you Jack. Oklahoma is a lesser place without you.......
You will never...ever again see a college football team with an offense as explosive as this 71 Sooner wishbone team. Greg Pruitt averaged 9.4 yards per carry for the season...not one game. Jack Mildren at QB was a magician. Jon Harrison the lone wide-out averaged 30 yards per catch for the season...not one game. The Sooners averaged 476 yards rushing per game for the entire season...a record that will never be broken. And the Defense was just as spectacular leading the nation in Defense. The 1971 Oklahoma Sooners were spectacular. They could not be stopped. They could not be defeated. They could only stop themselves.
Dave M I agree but the Sooners defense did not have a good game in the Game of the Century and it cost them a national championship. The Huskers D that year was arguably the greatest of all time. But the Sooners D did redeem themselves in the Sugar shutting down Auburn and heisman winner sullivan.
@@graciemaemarie11jones16 Wrong, OU had the ball after NU scored and went out on downs. Nebraska went down and scored when they had to. The scoreboard doesn't lie.
Only now did I find out that Jack Mildren died. Young man at 58, hard to believe that a tough as nails guy like him would go so soon. This was before my time, but playing FB in the 80's, we still went up against teams that ran the optionWB. Hated to play against it and I never was more worn out as when we did. He was a great one, one of the finest at it ever. RIP, let the perpetual light shine on ya....
Damn, Jack Mildren was soooo good! James Street was terrific with theTexas wishbone, but Jack Mildren at the helm of that Oklahoma wishbone was just devastating, to say the least! I could just watch his highlights all day! He mastered that offense instantly! Oklahoma switched from the Houston veer to the wishbone 4 games into the 1971 season! Now THAT is amazing! Considering how complicated the wishbone is to run effectively.
Jack Mildren, so brave. He was a Giant to me. Nebraska gave him such an awful beating and he would get back up and play lights out. That Game o the Century; I have never loved a team like those '71 Sooners.
Yep. Many of them were Texans by birth, Sooners by choice. Those were my favorites! Texas high school football has always served as a good farm system for the Sooners.
The game that forced the U of Texas to heavily recruit African American athletes. Julius Whittier was the first tAfrican American on the team but was known more for his academia than his athleticism. Donald Ray Ealey and Howard Shaw joined the team as judo transfers. Neither Shaw nor Ealey appeared in the official team picture. The Sooners had been recruiting African American players several years before the Longhorns did. Thanks Sooners
Yeah and now it sucks to watch football. Interesting and creative offense or defense has been replaced with "muh better athletes." The people who invented and built the game up in first place aren't even on the field anymore. And in every other field of entertainment they scream bloody murder if it's not diverse enough...
