Okay I just have to tell you a story I was such a awful kid 🤣🤣🤣 I hated cutting okra when I was young. Mama would send me out to cut it and I would get stung by the stalk, so I would cut the hardest ones and tell her it wasn't any good so I could quit 😔. When she would go check it. Later in the afternoon I would get into trouble by her😔 so I finally showed daddy how broke out I got from trying to cut it and he told mama to look at my arms she had a fit!!! She had never seen anyone brake out like that before. So from then on her and daddy cut the okra and I picked almost everything else I could. But yes I took many a hickery switch from my lies from not cutting okra🤣🤣🤣
I have fair skin & cant wear wool & polyester. Picking okra never bothered me. But corn leaves cut my arms to pieces! So I had to wear a long-sleeved shirt to protect my arms.
When I was in my mid years I started a garden. The okra stalks got so tall it was hard to pick & I got the okra itch from picking. When I told my dad about it he told me when he grew okra & it got about hip high he would cut it back some. This would result in the okra growing bushy instead of so tall. If you decide to try this I'd do it on 1 or 2 to see if you like it.
I love old clocks have one reminds me of my child hood. I told my mother several years ago, I was worried about my memory, she said don't, you've had a bad memory your whole life. She was right
My mom and dad had one of those beautiful German chime clocks. Had to be careful to not wind it too tight. Funny when you live with it, you get to where you sleep right thru the chimes but when we had company, they would complain about being awake during the night with the noise! LOL we all love your chimes!❤ music in Oklahoma!
Not much of an Okra fan, but we can learn to eat a lot of things if we need too. I have a clock my husband bought me when we first married. Needed it repaired, the guy had it I guess 5 or 6 years. When he retired he fixed it and brought it to me. I was so glad. That clock is over 50 years old and still running.
Your clock remind me of church bells. Home is a sacred place. My grandparents had coo coo clocks. Somehow it's so comforting. I've never grown okra but I got seeds so next year. Thanks for the great lesson. You're the best. I love how you reuse you bags not cheap just really smart!
What a joy for me to find your channel. I discovered you about 3 weeks ago and all I have done is watch your videos. Thank you for all you do. I’m a subscriber for sure.
The first time I had okra I was about 8. My mama told me it tasted like snap beans. I put that boiled okra in my mouth and it slid down my throat. It was so slimy! I love it fried though!
🙄I can't seem to get boiled okra to go down...it was up umtil about 15 years ago until I could get jello down, but okra still won't even get into the pan because I start salivating thinking about everything wrong with the picture...now with that said, I will eat pickled or fried okra ALL day long and you can stew it in tomatoes or add it to soups/gumbo and actually enjoy it ttil my heart's content❣
I fixed fried okra tonight for dinner. Freshly picked yesterday at a local farm. I always use an iron skillet to fry my okra. Nothing better on a summer night than fried okra and fresh sliced tomatoes.
Was in Hardy and Batesville last week-end. Bought a lot of okra at a stand in Ash Flat. Came home to Independence. Fixed a pot of navy beans - lay the okra on top, steam it, salt and pepper it then slurp it down. I’m like Mr. Brown, love it slimy.
Hello Miss Lori! Having been born and brought up in the city then suburbs, we were not familiar with okra. One time I was served at a friends house, but it was slimy and I decided I didnt care for it, but I still watch every one of your videos, because I love you way of life! I also have a clock like yours that does get on my son's nerves, but I love it, and I also reuse my Ziploc bags...hilarious! God bless!
@@WhippoorwillHoller Yes, I love fried squash and potatoes. It would be worth a try to add some okra, but I don't see it in the fresh produce. Should I try frozen?
I love watching your videos. I got a good laugh when your zip lock bag busted with the okra in it. I knew exactly what happened! I reuse my bags too and they will eventually breakdown. When I was a little girl we saved our plastic bread sacks and reused them. Being frugal is a good thing! 👍
I love every one of your cooking videos and am inspired by many but I have to say, that I will never fix okra. It isn't a vegetable I grew up eating. I did try it twice, once in a gumbo. It was the WORST (second to asparagus), slimy and just nasty! It gives me the shivers and not in a good way! 😊 Right now I have a huge pot of green and yellow beans, fresh from the farmers market with a cut up onion and a huge ham hock simmering on the stove. Have a good day!
My okra is finally READY to bloom. My whole garden has been a disaster this year. I just got a note today from one of my Arkansas friends today that y'all had an earthquake today. Hope that you and all of the family are all well and did not have any damage.
LORI!!! first time i planted OKRA i thought it was supposed to get BIG! 🤣I cried when i couldnt cut into it and said.."i wont grow this again" I am back at it and have some coming on! yay 🙌 Pick em' small ya'll 😊❤😊❤
I love okra gumbo. Mom would add a handful of shrimps and a piece of smoked sausage to it. I cook like mom did and my family just loves it. Thank you for sharing and God bless you and keep y’all safe.
I love okra anyway it is prepared. Fried pickled cooked over peas in soup I just love it. Since I have been watching utube, it has surprised me at the country cooks who dont know how to cut okra or asparagus. They dont know that the hard okra or the tough part of asparagus is discarded.
I love your videos we sometimes make okra sliced with Vidalia onions with Hamburg and rice. Absolutely delicious with spices of course one of my kids favorites.🐞🦬🐢🪶
I am with you and cook okra like you do. I have some right now that I grew that I am going to freeze. Love your videos and the life you and Mr. Brown live. Bless you both.
My husband and I just put up 31 pre breaded quarts and are still picking okra at least one time a day. 😂. He finally bought a gallon of seafood breader and started tossing it in that. It’s really good 👍. We flash froze ours and vacuum sealed them in meal size portions. He preheats grease in a cast iron pan and puts frozen okra in there and cooks in the oven . Works great . I usually leave a few okra pods to dry on the stalk for next years seed. We grow Clemson spineless and red Jing . Both are great . I even snack on it raw. Of course I’m born and raised in SC so our blood runs slimey anyway😝.
I love, love love Okra! My dad and I were the only okra eaters, when he died I stopped eating. I think I'll get some and enjoy the memories. I'm like Mr. Brown, I don't mind slim!
😅 Oops! One time too many for that bag! Just like we talked about the other day, life happens...roll with it! I've been known to use them over and over...they'll be hanging upside down drying all over my kitchen sink area. I sure loved Old Alabama Gardner and his videos. I still watch, but it's sad that there's no more coming. I'm so thankful he was willing to share all that wisdom on You Tube.
Thank you for sharing your cooking videos and gardening videos. I too have old clock. Loved the sounds. Grandfather clock ⏰ I got mine for 20 dollar's 16 years ago. Heavy I say.
Breaded okra is delicious!! Cooked any other way, not much of a fan. There is nothing better than fresh food straight out of the garden!! God bless you two.
we live in the midlands of SC where it's hot and the humidity hight. We are harvesting okra now what we're not cooking we freece in a pan then seal in a bag. I like okra cooked on green beans and fried. Hubby of 61 years save his own seeds.
When I was younger we all was a family went out to eat and my granny was eating okra and I asked her about it she gave me a taste said just pop it in your mouth don't look at it man I love okra
So nice to hear your voice, see your okra this am, thanks for a great video. I took a 10 day break from technology, which I do about 4 times a year. But glad to be back. I always learn something from yall.
I confess... I love okra but I NEVER had any idea of what it looked like in a garden. Thank you for always teaching me new things. BTW, the advanced copy of “Prairie” is on its way to your mailbox. I hope you enjoy following ‘young Frankie Harding’ across the prairie of the Nebraska Territory. Take a trip back into 1863 and get a little relief from this current world with all its troubles.
I was hoping you would email me or contact me somehow Yes. We got the Beautiful Book! I'm so Blessed with such a wonderful written, family book! I must be and odd ball. I like fried only . I can't stand it any other way. I a m 73 and I just love watching ya'll. I miss what I call the good old days. I catch your recipes and it want be to many days gone by that I have made the same thing. Love ya'll. If it's not to much trouble would you pray for me. I live alone but God gave me the strength each day to start canning again. I think I have finished now. My health has slowed me down doing it so I think it is the last one for now any way. Well I guess that's it for a while.
@@stanfromgeorgia3117 trying to do that in an apartment is almost impossible. We had construction and i had to bring everything inside, my plants were doing pretty well outside, but going indoors almost killed them. June, July and part of August until I could put them in the sun again. Never enough sun, but one is coming back to life. Saw new growth on one strawberry plant. They were lush and full with flowers and new fruit setting , until they were deprived of sun and heat . I doubt I'll get a single berry now.
@@recoveringsoul755 I grow in very small areas some grown some buckets and we do find I try only to give my plants only early morning to 100pm sun that's it and they do very well
I love okra!!! This is how we froze okra growing up. Okra in the freezer is like precious stones in a jewelry box!!! I watched the videos on how to can squash to fry early in the spring, but never got around to trying it. We just planted a second round of squash, so maybe…I will get around to it before the growing season ends!
You cook like my MIL cooked. Yummy food, country cooking at its finest. I sure miss her cooking, it was the bestest lol. Ty for sharing such wonderful ways to cook or save for later. God bless🙏🙏💞
I am from NE an I love okra, too. Had a few plants last year an they went crazy. 5 to 6' tall plants. Froze some and canned several pints of pickles, love them. Also canned sliced green tomatoes for the first time an they turned out great. Love fried green tomatoes. Almost 82 so gotta enjoy as long as I can.
My Nanny always cornmeal and put it in the oven for a bit. Let it cool and freeze. That was before all the new stuff. Never freezer burnt. Always had fried okra at Christmas 💯💯💯
@@WhippoorwillHoller You're quite welcome. Summer is a time to spend less on prescription medications and more time on summer fun (at least that's what a banner add that came flashing across my screen from Good Rx on another YT channel told me a few minutes ago). .
Thank you so very much Mrs. Lori my daughter loves okra & I end up buying but after watching your video I will now be able to save money and not buy it pre cut anymore!
Thank you Miss Lori! 🙂 I love the chimes of your clock! ♡ My dad's family are German-Swiss. Grandma had a clock with a beautiful chime and the pendulum was a young girl on a swing.😍 That's a much more pleasant memory than that of my memories of okra.😉☺️ Love and blessings! 💜
Thank you Lori for showing us how you freeze your okra. I miss Charles, The Old Alabama Gardner. He could sure grow a pretty garden. I’m thankful we’ve gotten some rain too. Everything has greened up and looks happy. Blessings to you both.❤️✝️🌻
Ms Lori, I LOVE okra! When I fry okra I like to chop up a green tomato in with my okra, they compliment each other! We love watching you and Mr Brown. Bless y'all......
I agree about tough okra. It has those stringy, almost like the choke of an artichoke, texture. I'm trying to like okra, but every time I get that tough one, it turns me off!
I truly don't like okra but I grew some for my husband. Thank you for showing me how to save them for future preparations. I've just been washing them and throwing them whole into the freezer
I loved Old Alabama Gardener! I only found him shortly before his passing but really enjoy and have learned a lot from his videos. He tickles me at the end of each video where he always says, "I wish you were here to taste this with me." RIP I believe his videos are all still up and I think (don't hold me to this lol) that his widow said she was going to leave his videos up for everyone to enjoy.
I enjoyed watching you cut up the okra for the freezer. OAG taught me how to can okra, too. I really enjoy fried okra and okra in gumbo. Another friend told me that a splash of white vinegar in gumbo will cut the slime from okra. It works. Thank you for another great video.
