It's finally Mater season! I love old Blue, but Mater is king.

You know it is honestly amazing that automatic transmissions work at all

It’s probably been said before but I’ll add my tuppence anyway, on your channel Rory, Mike’s camera work and narrative is really impressive, thank you both.

Rory is definitely a man of style. Who else would wear a pair of white sneekers when they were going on recovery where the surface is 12 inches deep in brown liquid silt? A man to acknowledge and a style to copy.

One thing on these old Chevys that is often missing is the reinforcing tie bar that stabilizes the 205 transfer case, taking a lot of stress off the tranny, another often missing component is the tie bar that braces the tranny case / torque converter access cover to the motor mounts on the block. On modified trucks it can be an engineering challenge to retain these features, but it's worth it!! On my modified Chevy powered rigs, I've broken bellhousings, tranny cases, tailhousings, ect and learned the importance of bracing everything, and providing super beefy transfer cases mountings direct to the frame, taking most of the load off the tranny tail / adapter and bell housing so they don't break when I'm on the party pedal in the rocks. I drive my rig interstate to the trails, gotta be able to drive it home !!

Second gear engine braking. Every 400 valve body I've seen has an e-clip holding the second gear piston into the valve body. And there's something to be done w the big spring under the piston, leave it out and/or put in a spacer, i think. That piston and band are for engine braking only, it doesn't doing anything for accelerating. Most race applications leave that band out. At 4:02, I saw your piston was pink plastic, there's a metal one available.

If you are missing 2nd gear hold back there’s an issue with the intermediate band/servo, it’s very easy to incorrectly install the servo parts. Worth checking before you remove the transmission. Pull the valve body and check for servo issue first. Good luck!

In one of Eric’s videos from bsf recovery he said he uses a diesel torque converter to help keep transmission temperatures down

I would bet that front shaft over extended and was under power and jumped a tooth and that is when the case cracked . 14:07

When I worked at a multiple truck garage a few of us would clean out the sumps in the floor drain. That wet stuff like you guys went through was heavy as heck. Another win for "Mater."

So... A TH-400 with a bolt on bell housing. That is a good unit. When you were removing the valve body I noticed the plastic accumulator piston stayed on the case. Those are captive in the valve body and that one must have failed. There are aluminum replacement ones that are stronger. Might be a good upgrade while you're at it. Trans tech for over 35 years here. Love your videos! LOL it's probably already back together by now. Keep up with the awesome work. All of you Rick!

Riiight about the time you got to the Jeep I thought, I wonder if Rory remembered to lock the hubs? Turns out he DID! YEA!

I haven't been inside an A/T since 1971, but I'm pretty sure that torque converter won't bolt up to the front axle yoke. And YES, deep sockets give you a whole lot more torque on those smaller allen wrenches. Your inner knuckles thank you.

Nice job getting by the loader, rescuing the Jeep was interesting, thought mater wwas in danger of tipping for a minute. Hate transmission problems. Thanks guys.

Great scenery again. Those switchbacks were a site to behold! Straight or wide sweeping curves and suddenly it's like going from a freeway to a cow path in 2 seconds! I was driving down I-75 in Michigan and saw a vehicle with Utah plates. I wanted to stop the guy and ask if he knew Rory, Shawn or Mike. But I didn't, he seemed to be in a hurry.

At Trailmater, they do the impossible straight away. Miracles may may take a little longer. Keep up the good work fellas.

Been a long time, but if I recall correctly, the lack of engine braking has something to do with the kick-down function. Let us know what you found - I'm curious.

I've always wondered about those long drivetrains- engine plus transmission plus transfer case is pretty long. The vehicle frame probably flexes some over that length and that plus the big bumps you guys go through probably put stress on the transmission case that it normally wouldn't see. I remember years ago when that creek crossing was like a gatekeeper- the banks were steep down to the water and steep back up the other side. That road has been greatly improved in recent years, maybe so they could build all those new campgrounds down there.

Oh no, a broken transmission is not good! That's amazing it was still going! WOW, That crack was bound to cause catastrophic failure VERY SOON! You guys caught that just in time not to break down! I bet the next time you tried to climb something it would have exploded or run it down the highway it would have run out of oil and burned up!
