Impossible Trail Repair That Worked

A customer called about their jeep that was broken on the atv bypass of Hamburger Hill in Kane Creek. The sector shaft had broken. We could not find a replacement, so we took Ol Blue and the buggy in to get it. We had a plan to attempt to weld the sector shaft together enough to get it out of where it was and back to the main trail, then if needed we would carry it out with the help of Ol Blue. We got to the jeep and decided to pull the steering box apart and weld the sector shaft back together. It worked well and didn't even leak when we got it back together. On the way out I decided to pull the buggy out using Ol Blue. It did not go well. So we left the buggy and came back for it later. Thank you everyone for watching and supporting us.

That was very impressive, kudos to Captain Caveman! Seriously, those guys are inspiring. And Rory shouldn't be upset, I'll paraphrase Paul and Matt; "It's what we do, we build it, we use it until something breaks. Then we look at it, try to figure it out and fix it better. And keep going until something else breaks, and repeat the process.". That, and you guys can't buy ready-made rigs for what you have to do.

Sorry for the damage that Old Blue took on this recovery but Like you said at the begging of the video it's a work truck things are going to happen. Not happy when it does but in the work environment that it works in it's a given thing are not always going to go as planned. It sucks but that the way of things. just glad no one was hurt and have to admit that was a tough trail to be going up even with out trying to towing something. the people that criticize second guess or as the saying goes backseat wrecker drivers either just keep quite or get a wrecker set it up the way they think it should be then go and do the stuff you do then they might just realize that yeah you and your crew really do know what you are doing. That's my 2 cents worth so I keep quite now. Best of luck to you Rory and crew.

That was an awesome demonstration of what can be accomplished on the trail, both the repair and taking Ol' Blue down into the nastiness. Your explanations of why you do what you do should be self-evident by just watching and learning but the keyboard warriors just can't help themselves, they seem to think they are, somehow, more experienced even though you guys show them twice a week you can make it happen no matter what. Though if it weren't for them, we wouldn't get all the why's and why not's, so I guess they are useful idiots after all! Thanks for all the great content!

Another amazing ride and repair and recovery for the Trailmater crew! We're "recovered SXS" folks who switched to a JK and understand how folks just want to "ride Moab" and don't even get maps or use OnX Offroad or the printed trail guides like the Fun Treks series, and oh, how much trouble you can get into, especially if you're using topographic maps or don't take the time to get out of the vehicle to read signs, check the trail ahead, or understand that some trails are out and backs that make those easy downhill steps into huge ledges on the return. I turned around on one trail that looked good on the National Geographic Moab Trail map, but other than a sign with a Jeep logo on it, you couldn't tell what kind of obstacles existed, so I walked the 1st line of stacked boulders in a v-notch wash, realized I had no cellphone coverage, we were by ourselves in a SXS with only 32" tires, and we're 70+ years old....turned around and tried another trail where survival was more guaranteed! 😁Thanks, Rory & Mike & Shawn for helping people not only survive the experience, but perhaps learn something and educate those watching for when they come visit!
