OLD 1970s OTIS elevator machinery - lift motor room tour

This lift motor room has hardly been touched - only a remote montoring panel has been added and connected into the existing relay controller.
It has the Otis carriage selector and lifts that run at two speeds. Unfortunately this one does not contain the 'bacon slicer' leveling cam. This sits alongside the carriage and has rotating discs that represent the 'fine tuning' for car leveling at each floor. When this is present, the cams now take charge of leveling rather than using brushes (the moving/springy contacts on the carriage).
Due to no leveling cam, the lift can only run at two speeds and quite abruptly changes between them.
The carriage selector was a common piece of kit on these old Otis installations and I've been trying to film one of these close up for a while now. On this day my wishes came true, and you guys also benefit from the experience with this upload.
WARNING - these environments are dangerous! I am an engineer by trade and I know the dangers of these motor rooms. Never touch anything (including open framed relays) unless you know what you are doing - RISK OF DEATH!

these older motors rooms are very entertaining. so many moving parts to see. matt your filming is excellent. the offset brushes act like brakes on a car.

Nice simple 7039 selector, almost relaxing to watch. Thanks for another glimpse into the magical world of the motor room!

Very interesting indeed, thanks for sharing. The building I used to work in had very similiar but slightly older (late 60s) lifts in, these included the infamous rotating plate selectors. All very Otis. I note a few electronic components in this controller cabinet wheras ours were entirely electromechanical. Sadly there aren't many of these setups left now.

Oh, and I'd be very grateful for more videos or any other info on how this stuff works. I've been trying to make a working lift 'game' in Blender.

yep, there are very few that I don't have. Express U, Otis V, Massive U shaped one for a goods lift, drop key, long drop key, triangular key + a few more.

Btw ... something personal , have you got shaft 'V' key for old gated lifts ? xD
@fklabs6813
@fklabs6813 6 лет назад
The motors do have fans attached to them, but I couldnt hear any fan noises. Are they only running when the motor gets warm?
@mrmattandmrchay
@mrmattandmrchay 6 лет назад
Good question and I think you've answered it yourself! From the lifts I've seen, the fans normally run at the same time as the motor. Having a thermostat to control each fan on each motor is just something else to go wrong. So they've either not been worked hard enough for the thermostat to kick in, or perhaps they don't work :) These have been modernised now, so guess we'll never know now!
@funcik1
@funcik1 11 лет назад
Im just asking , becuase for textiles in school I will try to do a 'V' key which can be mostly used in old gated lifts... all I know is 1cm on sides and it has 90degress shape ....the thing is when you insert the key to a hole , does it have specifc design (sharp shape) ? or is just flat thing that you have to push inside
@caroleast9636
@caroleast9636 3 года назад
You have to put the key in and then angle it in a specific way to work the lock. It helps if you know how the lock works. My keys were always smoothly rounded at the end, but that was just to save wearing holes in my pocket!

I've been a naughty boy and uploaded copyright material (music) and "Increased limit not available for this account". I don't really mind as 15 minutes is long enough anyway :)

No, this one has already been modernised iirc like 3-4 years from when the vid is present. MrMatt made a update also

Those are European style geared machines with the ring gear below the worm.
@peterlomas984
@peterlomas984 8 лет назад
+kansasthunderman1 Yes they are 15ATL machines, AT denotes that it is (above traction) 15 is the distance between the motor shaft (fast speed) and the drive sheave shaft (slow speed) the measurements are in inches.
@caroleast9636
@caroleast9636 3 года назад
The 15 in the designation is the pitch diameter of the wormwheel to the nearest inch.
