Officially, they were retained till the radiation level decrease (these storages have a name "the place of temporary storage of waste". So, officially the vehicles were moved because the radiation became low. In fact, almost all vehicles were ransacked by "stalkers", engines and other parts were stolen, so the vehicles were moved to prevent further looting of radioactive parts. Most of the helis, tanks and trucks were used as rescue vehicles and stuff in chernobyl when the explotion happened. They were highly radioactive and left at that spot just outside pripyat to rest until the radiation on them had lowered. They have since been moved.

Many of these vehicles just hadn’t yet been scrapped when the pix were taken. Not “abandoned,” but worn out, obsolete and no longer serviceable, like the hundreds of B-17s and B-24s that were turned into beer cans after sitting out in the desert for a while in Kingman, Arizona after WWII. Take a look at AMARC, or “the boneyard” at Davis-Monthan AFB. Eventually all those old machines will be scrapped and smelted down to aluminum ingots.
