Given experience, I think the search light isn't their general sight, but more of a warning. It ticks on if you were within range of sight, and the period to attack, regardless of you or entity, would be while it's on. This means that if it's on, you'd best high tail it out of there before it fully registers your presence. I've also had instances where I was out of general sight of said beam, but still within a few steps of its range, and it agro'd onto me. So if that light comes on, you'd best be out of there.
It does feel like that, however, it seems that its vision is bigger than spotlight, when its day, but it slowly decreases to the size of a spotlight, as it becomes darker outside. Their pathfinding is pain, they constantly unpredictably turn around, spotting you immediately, as if they knew that you were behind.
Old Birds actually have two FOVs! One is a giant sphere in front of them and the other is a more standard cone shape. The spherical FOV activates the spotlight and alerts it to your location so it will slowly attempt to turn towards you, the conical FOV makes them fully aggro.
Exp is very, interesting map... Once at FIRST DAY i encountered Nutcracker, i went to the ship to buy a shovel, i killed Nutcracker, and on my way back to the ship with all the loot i had I've encountered 2 dogs and a sandworn, ofc once i had to run from the sandworm dogs noticed me and i died.

Hear me out: what if old birds could be tampered to break them? Make a memory puzzle on a conpartment that you can only reach with the ladder but if you fail it activates

Yo i got an old bird spawn on experimentation as well. I think they turn on later on easier moons because i had to wait until 11pm for it to turn on. I also got it to be eaten by an earth leviathan lol
-Any of them activate 1 by 1 after 12 pm,if you happen to pull the apparatus out of its socket in the building at any time then you pretty much provoked all nearby old birds into activation regardless of the time of day.
