In this episode, I restore this vintage Black & Decker general duty 1/2" gold series drill from the 1960s. GIven to me by a friend's grandad, I'm not sure about the current going rate for these things, or what it's worth after the restoration. But either way, it's a really nice looking and feeling drill.

Great work, but I would definitely have replaced the cable too. I believe the gradual speed up will be due to the brushes taking on the correct curve of the armature, and hence better electrical contact is happening. Regards Mark in the UK

This was a real treat, my dad had one just like it in the 60's as a child he used to let me play with it, I had a board with a bunch drilled holes in it.

I agree, it's just a generic black tool cord, there's nothing unique about it worth preserving, just looks manky next to all the shiny new paint. My assumption is that the turn around time on this project was short and couldn't source a new cable in time.

Such a nice quality casting, and the engineerings so solid and serviceable. Their engineers obviously refused to design planned obsolescence into the thing!

Outstanding job restoring it to it's former glory. You're right, many things today are not made like years ago. Many things are throw away, not repairable. Thanks. 👍🏻

Agreed. A nice see through armoured core cable (with the visible silver braid) inside would’ve fit the original cable boot nicely, and looked awesome as well.

I have 2 of that model of drill, one in 240v and one 110v and they both still work fine apart from cosmetic appearance, I also have the next size up in the series which I regularly use in my drill press without any problems. Like you said great standards of materials and workmanship back then.

Just a suggestion. If you're rewiring again, consider replacing the old wire with a long electric kettle lead. The weight of the wire should be the same. Keep up the good work, look forward to seeing the cars come back soon.

i happen to have an even bigger than that one black and decker drill it has a number 3 morse taper socket on the front end.. a friend bought a new milwalkee hole hog.. he was so proud of it.. as he opened his van door. he said lets play who has the biggest power drill . i said OK... he whipped out this 5 minutes from homedepot drill kit.. i climbed in my van and moved some stuff around and pulled out that monster of a drill.. he said.. i don't want to play who has the biggest tool with you anymore.. oh and you should see my 3/4" milwalkee 240 volt drill.. i took the handle off to put a new cable on it.. and the wife threw out the screws .. when i got replacement screws she threw out the handle... oh well i did not have any place to plug it in anyway..

The reason it'll go another 60 years is because its made from metal for the most part. New drills are made of plastic.

I’m surprised you didn’t disassemble the chuck? They don’t look like it but they are easy to disassemble, just close the jaws half way, put a socket over the jaws that’s big enough to not contact the jaws but smaller that the inner diameter of the circular rack gear that the chuck key interfaces with then just hold the chuck by the bit that tightens it and hammer on the socket There are video tutorials online if my rambling makes absolutely no sense 🤣

I personally prefer to see these small restorations instead of cars, the cars last so long that it is boring and their high cost lengthens the process, even more, I know it is your main source of money, but I hope you continue to restore small, interesting and beautiful things as well.
