You are correct about the use of (emulated) old-school gear, was aiming for that 70s vibe in the OST. I actually chose this song for a music theory project back in college and reached out to Chris to ask some questions. Really cool guy, took the time out of his day to do an email-interview. Anyway, you might be happy to know that his guitars and bass (and I think maybe his drums too, but not 100% sure) are all conventionally played, and then digitally recorded. Really talented dude

It's so interesting how you can derive some gameplay aspects through the soundtrack alone. You mentioned sci-fi, and yes, the main theme of the game is sci-fi, and you also mentioned anxiety, and yes, one of the feelings you'll feel when playing RoR2 is anxiety.

Heyyyy! Awwwright! I love Chris' music and I think he's an amazing composer! Indeed, that's the "theme" of the second game, the menu song. It sets the leitmotif for most of the second game's music. Fun thing: both Risk of Rain and Risk of Rain 2 are CHOCK FULL of musical references. And you hit the nail in the head, the game is very heavy on the sci-fi, alien themes. Sure would love to see it on Twitch! Oh, and I'm still here!

Absolutely love the OST for the Risk of rain games both 1 and two. Chris' compositions on them are so good and really give you that sense of the unknown. Also every time I hear the tracks (some more than others), I always get a Pink Floyd feel from them with the almost dream like soynd they have.

Chris's work on Risk of Rain 1, 2 and Deadbolt are a MASTERCLASS in game OST. By the gameplay alone you would never be able to pick up so much of the lore, the vibe, the nuance of all the lore behind the things happening on screen and the soundtrack just bridges that gap wonderfully.

One of the most fascinating aspects of writing music for games is how they can, and often do, write the songs to adjust based on things happening in the game, transitioning to different components of the song depending on context. Of course, that means that listening to many of these songs on their own is not "naturalistic" because it's not experienced the way a gamer would normally experience them, but that's one of the peculiarities of the medium.

Watching you, and listening to how you worked on pulling apart certain aspects of it, well, makes me realize that truly comprehending why I like certain music over others on a full factual level is probably not something I'm capable of doing, damn! I seriously hope I see some more of my favorite game soundtracks heard by you though, this was super interesting and I can say without a doubt, the risk of rain series would not be the same without the music made by Christodoulou. Its a game where the actual game's ambiance is so elevated by the precision and effort put into the soundtrack it simply would be too much to remove it.

May I suggest the song "Rise up Dead Man" from the game Hunt: Showdown? Its made by the Port Sulphur Band. The Band was specifically made to make fitting music for the game and mostly consists of people that worked on the game itself, like the audio designer and the lead narrative designer. Its a dark atmospheric game taking place in 1895 in the Bayou of louisiana and the music fits it very well.

Check out Hylics 2's OST, particularly the battle themes which include Them's Fighting Words, Battle (alternate), That's A Big Stick, and Fancy Meat Computer. The composer, Chuck Salamone, also released a "musical expansion" to the game called Moonage Lobotomy that's definitely worth checking out. The game is a surrealist masterpiece and the music is very much the same.

I love this type of content. If willing I would also recommend the content be extended to a small amount of story introduction the the game OST in question. How soundtracks layer with the story or setting of a game can also help understand musical direction in wonderful ways. Even in small amounts it can often be appreciated by players and non-gamers alike. I love hearing the wonderful composition commentary!

Please check out "Coalescence" from the first game and then "Con Lentitud Ponderosa" from the second one back to back in the same video, they go hand in hand and it's just great. All of the songs in Risk of Rain is truly great.

I honestly love how real your reactions to the larger parts were, definitely looked and felt like you geniunely enjoyed it. As is customary for the comments, I would recommend Dew Point and Coalescence from Risk of Rain 1, then Antarctic Oscillasion, Con Lentitude Poderosa, and Terra Pluviam from RoR2. I feel like these give a nice layout of different sounds and songs Chris has done. Have a great day!

I'm still here. Let's do the Twitch! In all seriousness, the whole soundtrack is excellent and worth a listen. But if you only do one more, I'd actually recommend Antarctic Oscillation. It's a sort of résumé piece, as someone else put it. The Rain Formerly Known as Purple, Terra Pluviam, ... con lentitud poderosa, The Raindrop that Fell to the Sky (personal favorite) all fantastic as well. Looking forward to future plays!

I'm still here, and hope you do some more of risk of rain 2's soundtrack, all of the tracks are stellar. Also would recommend looking at Ultrakill's soundtrack if you want some more metal content. "Chaos" listened to immediately before "Order" could be interesting, but there are a lot of fun tracks in the game and it's pretty hard to choose just one.
