Old Computers Won't Work on Windows 11 24H2
if you got a really old PC from before 2010, then you wont be able to use Windows 11 24H2 when its released in the fall, Windows 11 24H2 won't boot on unsupported hardware. It requires a CPU with SSE4a (AMD Barcelona or newer) or SSE4.2 (Intel Nehalem or newer). So even later Core 2 CPUs (Penryn) won't work because they max out at SSE4.1. Its all to do with the population count instruction (POPCNT) for short. thanks to TheBobPony @ / 1756771051634135277

It's absolutely ridiculous how many computers are going to end up in the landfill because of this. Most people don't want to use an alternative operating system. And windows is trying to force everyone on to Windows 11 using newer machines.

Of course they are! Micro$haft (Microsoft) wants to make as much money as possible by raising the demand for brand-new computers! You see, Micro$haft makes money every time a new PC that comes preinstalled with Windows 11 is built. That's because the PC manufacturers such as Dell, HP, and Lenovo will purchase Windows 11 OEM licenses whenever they build new PCs.

Honestly who cares if they're 15+ years old if they still meet some people's needs? Since 11 runs absolutely fine even on 2nd gen Intel CPUs it's clear the computers are still capable of running it but Microsoft just wants to make you buy a new computer because why not. Also,there are still modern Pentium processors that can only compete with a 13 year old i7 and still loose to it in some tasks so in that case,a 3rd and 4th gen high end CPU will still smash the budget CPU lineup for the upcoming years

I don't think it has anything to do with nostalgia. I think it has to do with the fact that if it works for what one needs so be it. I still miss Windows 7 as do many but M$ made sure we would eventually all need 10. My mom is 87 years old and still runs an online business using a simple AMD system I built for her in 2013. It does everything she needs. I can guarantee that new tech will confuse her to no end and that especially includes having to learn a newer version of Windows. To a large degree its because of Microsoft's incompetence over the decades in making their operating system secure. They kept adding on more and more stuff but never dropped back and started from scratch, basing it from the ground up on being secure. Heck, there's still old DOS 6.0 code in Windows even today. Jeez. So instead of paying a bunch of cheap Indian programmers to "fix" Windows, they'd rather rely on the "crutch" of using a hardware fix for security. They don't CARE that it will cost you money instead of costing THEM money.

most likely just spyware related. they talked about using frame generation to make windows "lighter" and less demanding of computer resources, but they never talk about removing bloat and spyware. instead they just keep adding more. i remember back in the day where win2000, winXP and win7 where significantly lighter on your computer. now its different. also they have been adding targeted adds and "news"(actually just distractions and propaganda) everywhere. i have a family member with win11 and there are adds and "news" everywhere. the average linux distro doesnt have that much bloat on it and you can optimize it for privacy and security. also less viruses too!

Even in the Linux world a lot of Distros stopped supporting older x86 hardware, you can still get Linux working on old hardware, DSL (Darn small linux) just released an update after a long time, I think it is based on AntiX with support for older computers and I think it still fits on a CD even for older computers. There reaches a point with older hardware, where it becomes a pain to do anything online , I was playing around with an old netbook the other day I found in a closet, with only a gig of ram and that thing choked on most modern webpages. The only reason it could even get online at all is because it had Linux on it.

Most older people do not like moving forward to new technology because at some point adapting to new stuff becomes more of a challenge to learn. When I was young, new tech was an exciting adventure, and I was eager to learn new ways of doing things that would make life "easier" or more "productive". However, as technology evolved and legacy data became more important requiring major backward compatibility to allow continued use of well-known systems, things felt like a great deal of upheaval and trouble to move with the times. I still am not too fond of the ribbon interface in Microsoft Office and find the older toolbars and menu system far more intuitive. It would also be nice to be able to play well-loved games which ran on older platforms on newer hardware for a little retro relaxation. Obsolescence is a curse that comes with progress, and learning new technology becomes more of a chore than an exciting adventure. Computing used to be fun, but with complexity and progress it is now as dull as learning arithmetic was when we were at school. Still, progress goes on and ultimately we have to learn to move with it.

Someone new to computers isn't going to have a harder time with Linux than Windows. It's the 10+ year Windows veteran with skills and expectations due to thousands of hours of using Windows that will have a hard time with Linux. The first time you have to learn anyway, and that can be fun. But you don't want to have to unlearn and relearn again after having gone through the effort once already.

Well, as for the Linux distro, one can go to if you are looking for something that looks and feels like Windows, I would say Wubuntu or Windowsfx. Of course, several distros out there would work such as, Linux Lite, Linux Mint, or Kubuntu, to name a few. Also, you can use a USB drive to boot with and test each distro before committing to a final version.

Hej Brian thanks for the the video yes this is on deeper level and yes 24H2 seams to requires instructions sets in the Cpu but many will be able to run Windows 11 24H2 but if people have a computer that is 12 years old or more then, then it becomes impossible to run Windows 24H2 on computers that do not have support for Windows 11. But we'll see what happens like you also say Brian but Microsoft what it seems to set higher requirements for Windows 11 for very old computers. But if you still have a computer that is older than 12 years, it is time to upgrade. I have downloaded the CPUID there you can check a lot, including what the computer has for Instructions sets in the Cpu i have been waiting for this because, sooner or later microsoft will block computers with unsupported hardware. I personally think why Microsoft might start demanding even tougher requirements for, Windows 11 and upcoming Windows versions in, the future it is about AI and upcoming NPU( neural processing unit) take care Brian and have a lovely evening.

Its possible Tiny will recompile the instruction set to allow older computers to run Windows 24H2.: There comes a point of diminishing returns with such a workaround snd its best to upgrade to a PC with s chip that supports what you want to do.
@zoomosis
@zoomosis 4 месяца назад
@@NormanF62 I suspect the only possible workaround is through a hacked boot loader that loads the kernel into memory then patches out the POPCNT instruction with a series of instructions compatible with older machines. The code translator would need to run in the background for the entire time Windows is running, which would be a pretty serious hit to performance, if it was even possible. All to allow a handful of Intel Core 2 Duo/Quad PCs to run the latest version of Windows 11. Even if someone succeeds in that goal, it's still not worth it.

"Why don't you get rid of all those computers and just do it all on one?"? There are several reasons for that involving safeguards like redundancy (Although, dedicated for one purpose if another system breaks you can utilize the other.), ease of use (Different activities on different machines makes choosing settings easier and avoids time-consuming choices of space allocation, directory structure, and prioritizing resources.), and avoiding abandoned utility. For example, I have a laptop that while old can still support some browsers. If a problem arises on my desktop computer I can let the system stay where it's at in terms of activity (i.e. stay in the same window or on the same tab, or stilling running an app) while I search for the most prudent next move from resources on the Web using the old laptop. There are other reasons as well involving economic and environmental aspects, but I'm sure you're already getting feedback from different perspectives on them.

Many people total computing requirements are satisfied by being able to run a modern web browser. That can be on a PC or a smart phone. The reason so many people are still using PCs is simply the comfort of the form factor - a large screen that they can read (more) easily and a full sized keyboard/mouse for more comfortable interaction. Old hardware is perfectly capable for these people. The OS is then just the launcher for the browser so who needs Win11 especially when Microsoft keep playing with the user interface making it less familiar and more confusing to many users than Linux Mint or Zorin OS would be. Added to that, Windows is becoming an advertisement delivery platform to bombard people with information they don't want and didn't ask for. No wonder people still fall for pop-up scams. They've been trained by Microsoft to accept that stuff will just appear on the screen unbidden.
