Thank you Tom & Malissa brings back memories from my early early babyhood, up till I was making these for my sons & then grandchildren, anytime there was left over mashed, haven’t made them in a while, THANK YOU FOR THE MEMORIES, I’m. 72 now, I’ll be following you.
I believe potato cakes from leftover mashed potatoes originated as a "struggle/hardship" way of using up everything and became very popular during the Great Depression. My grandmother also used mashed potatoes to make Potato Candy.
My mom used to use mashed potatoes and icing (confectioners) sugar, and food colouring and various flavoured extracts to make homemade chocolates. You can tell by the ingredients that it was a long time ago! But they were affordable, and we enjoyed them.
Beat up the egg BEFORE you put it into the "Taters." You can use any leftover vegs to the "Spuds." Something that is really good is the addition of as much grated onion as you want, with as much crispy, drained, chopped up fried BACON up as you like. Great with fried eggs for any meal you want it for, even a snack. If you go out camping, take along a couple boxes of the Instant potatoes. That makes life a wee bit easier. I grate my onion because there is more flavor with the juice it will produce. I have found that the Purple onion is, in my opinion much tastier than a yellow or white, because it has a smooth sweetness. I also use the Idaho potato grated up which I think is even better than the mashed. Both of these recipe's go back to before the Civil War.
Thank you Melissa, for putting the receipt on your page. It's really so convenient to copy the receipt while Tom is doing the construction. You are the only creators that do this. Have a wonderful day.
My German grandmother made potato cakes from scratch on Wednesdays. We would make potato fools of ourselves. These look so similar but a lot easier. No grading raw potatoes! This is real comfort food when you are feeling bad. I will certainly give this a try. My grandmother called these Plinzen. Nothing better than these.
I grew up eating potato cakes from leftover mashed potato and love them! Through my tavels, I discovered German potato cakes with grated potatoes and love those equally as well.
You guys are sweet. It shows how kind you are and how much you love to cook in your videos. Melissa you seem to be a very lucky lady, your husband is so nice and very gentle in his approach to cooking and interacting with people, it’s a pleasure to watch you both. Love potato pancakes, I always put red onions and garlic in mine, providing everyone eating likes both. 😊
TOM your potato cakes are just like the way my grandma made hers. One of my favorite meals that she made was potato cakes, baked beans & weiners. Thanks for bringing us an oldie but goodie recipe.
Love potato cakes. My Mom always used up the left over mashed ones. She added finely chopped onion, celery and dash of garlic powder. Her Mom Scotch-Irish and that’s how she was taught. Good with anything you add. Adding cooked ham or bacon…..even yummier! Thank you for sharing the basic recipe, reminded me to whip some up! 😊
❤ SNAP! We make our tatto cakes the same! Only difference is I fry the bacon on purpose to add to the cakes and then stir up the cakes with the additions as noted in the rendered bacon fat... Nothing goes to waste. Sending love 😊
I just made potato cakes for my grandson this morning. I use the left over corn from the night before, if I have it. My husband has not ever had them. I don't follow a recipe I measure everything from the heart. And this morning they thoroughly enjoyed a good old fashioned breakfast. These are also fabulous sultry. But for breakfast maple syrup or Mrs. Butter-Worths. I played this video just to show them I didn't come up with them all by myself. Love the history you shared of your youth. It is definitely a taste of childhood. I hope I remember to do this for the grandkids often enough. ❤
Tom and Melissa, have you ever made mashed potato dumplings? Equal parts potatoes, egg, and flour. Mix and form golf ball sz balls and simmer in boiling water till floats!! So good with pork and gravy😋❤️
Called Tattie Scones in Scotland, they’re made with just flour and mashed potato (no egg). Traditionally made immediately after the meal was eaten, while the leftover potatoes were still warm. Then flour is added until the mix becomes like a dough that can be rolled out. They were kept overnight in a cool place wrapped in a tea towel, and fried in butter for breakfast the next day
Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful story. It's fantastic to hear about food from all around the world. We really appreciate your informative comment and we will definitely try your Tattie Scones. Interestingly enough, we were in Stirling, Scotland one year ago today! It was a great visit and we toured the castle. We live in a town called Mount Sterling. Our town was founded by a gentleman named Hugh Forbes, who came here from Scotland. He named our town after his hometown of Stirling, Scotland. We were so excited to be in Stirling and feel the connection with that city because of its connection to our small town.
@@comesitatmytable9044 I’m heading to Stirling next month! Go there regularly. My grandfather was called William Wallace and so was his father, and his father before him…I call the monument grandpa’s tower. Lol
There are several great ways to dress these up a bit. We just wanted to put the basic recipe out there for anyone to start with if they didn't already have it. Thank you all for watching.
I note the careful pronunciation of po - tay - toe cakes. I come frum the mountains and that seems a bit citified to me. After all, they're just tater cakes, and I love 'em. Thanks for the video! Imma gonna have to make a batch 'fore long, soon as I can get around to it.
I really like the "waste not, want not" philosophy! My mom always reheated leftovers for an easy extra meal, which became even quicker when we got a microwave oven. We also scraped our plates into a plastic container with a lid kept in the refrigerator to take over to Grandpa's farm for the cats in the barn.
I'm 69. My mother made these when I was VERY young but she added chopped onion most every time. As an adult I've thought that these would make an excellent sandwich of any kind.
Thanks for the receipts. My mom always told me, one medium potato per person! And she was right that's what I have been doing for years now. Thanks again for the receipts. 😊
I also grew up eating potato cakes a couple times a month. We also grew most of our vegetables (family of 8) and I think you are right. Potatoes were cheap and made a meal go farther. Thank you for sharing. It brought back memories of my childhood. God Bless you both
❤❤❤ my Mom came from Peru, Indiana. my Dad came from Kentucky. Both of them would use cold mashed potatoes, formed into a patty, then fried in butter, in a cast iron skillet. They were so good. ❤❤❤
Just like when I was growing up, we fixed them added different ingredients all the time. Our kids never got tired of them, and still are requested when they visit.
We used a greater and grated the potatoes, and made potato pancakes that way!!! Which you reminded me of here!! I’m going to try and make some potato pancakes the way I was raised to do it with the greater!! I never make mashed potatoes!! But thank you very much… I watched your video to help prompt my brain on what to cook and how to cook again!! I’m 75 and will be turning 76 soon!!! And my “ tinker isn’t tunking” like it used to!!! Thank you very much to both of you!! Love, Sister Gay, Michaelis and family… have you found the gospel of Jesus Christ yet? ❤️😇🙏💙🏡🌎🇺🇸👌🌻😎
You are so welcome! We are very happy to hear that our video connected you to a wonderful memory of your mother. Thank you so much for sharing that with us.
I make mashed potatoes on purpose because the next day I make a casserole out of them. I fry up a pound to a pound and half of hamburger and add a package of dry lipton onion soup mix while cooking it, once done I drain it and I add the burger to the bottom of a casserole dish and I then empty a can or two (depends on how big a casserole dish you used) of canned (or homemade if I have left overs of that) cream corn, just pour it right over the burger. I then add mashed potatoes over the top of the corn untill it's all covered, throw some cheese (doesn't matter what kind) on top and then bake it until it is bubbly around the edges maybe 20 to 30 minutes and take out let rest a bit and enjoy. Kids love it. These look really good I have never had them. I will have to try them, wonder if some fresh chopped chives would be good in them. Thanks
Yes chives are great in them. I always add some chives or green onions in mine and a bit of garlic powder. We love them made this way. I also make fried cornbread cakes the same way. Your recipe for the casserole sounds delicious. I’ll have to try it. So, there are very good reasons to cook too many mashed potatoes! No worries!
I tease him about how many leftovers we have, but he knows I love having them! You are absolutely right, there's so many reasons to make a bunch of mashed potatoes.
I'm 79 and my mom was from Texas. She made potato cakes for breakfast sometimes. Way too much mashed potatoes is the right amount. Anything less and you risk having no potato cakes for breakfast. I've never been able to make good ones because I wasn't;t sure how much flour is optimal. Thanks for teack=hing me that!
My Mother made potato pancakes when I was growing up. I've made them ever since. I'm used to making them for breakfast with a couple over easy eggs and a few slices of bacon. Yum!
Back in the 70's 80's and early 90's my mom n dad would often have potatoes as part our meal throughout the week. Can still remember my mom's golden crispy brown potato cakes!
Fixed some in my air fryer with Christmas dinner leftovers. I add garlic and onion powders, an egg, flour, a little bit of sugar, some shredded cheese and some old Bay seasoning. I add minced onion to some for my husband. Frying them absorbs a lot of grease so I fixed them in the air fryer last time and added extra cheese to the top! They were delicious!
My dad was German and the only way I’ve seen them made was from scratch. They were a treat when he made them. I’ve never seen them done like this and I will make them in the future. Thanks.
My mother made the best potatoe cakes. My grandpa was born in 1885. My mother was born in 1929 and her mother would make these for her kids long before the Depression. They didn't waste. They simply made something out of nothing to make one more meal out of what they had left over.
My mother always made them and taught me to make them when i was 8. I'm 56 now and have mad potato pancake skills 😂😂!! My fiance gets excited when he sees leftover mashed potatoes in the fridge
My grandmother used to make these when she had leftover mashed potatoes, and you mentioned boiled potatoes she used to make them and I never knew anyone that had them back then, I didn’t realize it was an old school thing
I loved when my Mama made these when I was growing up. I couldn’t believe how easy they are to make when I asked her how a few years ago when I had a craving for them.
Love potato pancakes. I Always add onion to mine. Preferably green onions. Daddy always liked butter and syrup on his, I do too. As far as over cooking the proper amount of potatoes. General rule of thumb is 1 medium potato per person. Always add couple of extras for big eaters. This really works well with potato salad. Thanks for sharing your recipes and talents.
You guys are such likable people. 😊 Just stumbled across your channel looking for new recipes and I'm SO glad I found this one since I had given up on making potatoe cakes since when I tried they fell apart because I didn't know about the flour ans egg going in!! Now I know. Thanks ❤😂
made this tonight , first time in a long time , used your recipe, got told it was a keeper ! thank you so much for posting this video , have used some of your others too and got good : honey seal of approval : on them too ! enjoy your videos very much , well explained and easy to follow , thank you again .
Those made my mouth water guys! Lol I do love them so much. I put lots of pepper in mine and a lil onion powder, then eat them with ketchup or sour cream. They are so yummy!
Thank you for sharing and keeping this kind of recipe alive for future generations. Without you and others like you, recipes like this could be lost forever. To which I say…. That would be so sad. Now I’m craving potatoes.😂
Give it a try. I bet they will be delicious. Do you think she had a secret ingredient she added to these? This is a basic recipe but adding onions and/or cheese is just the beginning of ways to dress them up!
My husband LOVED potato pancakes, which he first ate in Germany. This recipe is the perfect starting point for recreating the cakes he so loved. Thanks for giving me an "in" to another nostalgic recipe.
Enjoy watching you and your wife. Love to hear a story about what you are fixing and how your mom did it. I will try these cakes after Thanksgiving. Always fix too much potatoes.
My mom was a single parent and I remember eating a lot of potatoes! There a great filler ❤ I can remember many times having an iron skillet of fried potatoes and onions. My grandma taught me how to make potato cakes - so delicious!
