I started my channel because of you! People love watching but a lot of them want some explanation, so I set out to try and explain the reason behind the method! Keep strong bro!

This is not a hamon, it's a welding line. This is a mark of being hand forged, as it's made from 3 separate pieces - hard steel for the face, soft steel, iron for the body and hard face for the crosspeen. That's the traditional way of forging a hammer when quality steel was much more expensive, so instead of making it from expensive material it was made from a cheap, crappy one with the quality steel only on working ends. I weights the same, works the same but was cheaper to produce back in the day. Todays hammers are made out of one solid piece of 1045 steel (mostly), and you forge weld the faces only to show skills as a blacksmith, as it's not very common nowadays. I personally prefer second way of forging a hammer, because it also looks interesting after you etch in the acid due to carbon content difference (the more carbon the darker etching). Especially interesting ones are those forged of wrought iron, when you can see wood-like grain after deep etching.

Dang Greg that is super interesting and informative! Thank you for taking the time for the explanation! I would assume that my 100 year old flatter that I restored must have been made from a solid piece of steel which would mean for it's time it was probably fairly expensive. Would it be safe to make that assumption?
