(OLD) How and Why to Use Trackpad + Gyro Aim in First-Person Shooters, aka "Turn Pad" on Steam Deck

UPDATE: See a more up-to-date, in-depth version of my guide here:
• Steam Deck First-Perso...
This also works for third-person shooters. I don't know why I made my hand cam so small here, but check out my other videos like this one to see it better:
• Borderlands 3 Headshot...
Some corrections:
1:28 Unlike Splatoon, my standard stick-turning scheme does allow vertical turning (like most default schemes). It is still not as precise or responsive as trackpad look.
3:20 So you can't really see me using the gyro more, but I can certainly feel it. Actually, I would say the benefit of trackpad-aiming is largely in the *feel*, which can't be conveyed in video, and why you really have to try it yourself before you can form a proper opinion.
14:40 I say "it doesn't get jittered", then you see my aim jittering, lol. I was exaggerating the click, plus there's in-game recoil. My point is it's much *better*, not perfect :)
18:07 Forgot I already made a video on how the trackpad can work better for twin-stick:
• Steam Deck: Don't Use ...
Setting recommendation timestamps:
0:41 Lower Vertical Scale
5:28 Higher Smoothing
7:34 Higher Trackball Friction
(Note: You can also disable Trackball Mode altogether if you desire)
11:17 Gyro Sensitivity/Vertical Scale
11:35 Gyro Smoothing
12:18 Switch Primary Fire to Left Hand
When I change turning styles:
1:15 Quick Flick Stick demo
1:30 Standard Stick
4:05 Turn Pad
4:20 Standard Stick
6:05 Turn Pad
16:10 Flick Stick
20:08 Subconscious switch back to Turn Pad
Benefits of Turn Pad over Flick Stick I didn't mention:
- Easier to do small turns and controlled turns. Flick Stick makes it harder to do many small turns compared to both trackpad and standard stick turning.
- Turn Pad works well in many contexts: driving vehicles, adjusting sniper scope aim, navigating most game interfaces, etc. Flick Stick basically requires you to add a mode to handle these cases.
One last note: if the game does not handle mixed gamepad/mouse events well, you will need to change all inputs to keyboard/mouse outputs. I may cover that in a follow-up video.

One thing I personally did instead of turning the vertical scale way down. I realized that my "default" thumb swipe was at a slight angle, so I turned the axis of the track pad by 20° or 30°.

Flick Stick was originally made with the DS4 in mind for the JoyShockMapper app; JoyShockMapper got support for other controllers later. The idea was gyro would be the primary aiming method with Flick Stick being used for quick turns with RS so the stick still got some use. I have tried Flick Stick several times but I find myself just using gyro exclusively in those cases. With the Steam Controller, I usually use the Right Touchpad for aiming rather than gyro.
@DoubleJumpPunch

Yes, on the Deck I don't think it works as well as the touchpad. Flick Stick may actually be a better fit on the ROG Ally with its lighter weight and looser sticks. Too bad you still have to deal with third-party hacks to even use the built-in gyro.

When I got my Steam Deck back in nov, I didn’t expect to adopt the gyro + trackpad combo as I intended to only ratchet with gyro. I think they really compliment each other, and I got use to them pretty quickly (probably because I’m use to both separately as I used gyro on console and touchscreen controls for mobile shooters which is a bit similar to trackpad in how it functions). I do use the trackpad as a general camera or reorientation tool in assistance to gyro mostly due to the fact I like to use the face buttons a lot.

Nice! Yeah, since they're unconventional, most people don't generally buy the Deck *because* of the thumbpads, but for those who take the time to understand them, they often become the sleeper feature!

Nice video! Keep up with the fresh finds! I'm literally uploading a fresh video for Insurgency Sandstorm FPS with my latest finds on "RECOIL ASSIST" for mil sims (moving cursor down 15px every 10ms) and GYRO while using iron sight/scope (with gyro having 150% vertical sensitivity so you can mitigate the leftovers of the recoil with gyro mostly). Steam Deck is indeed a lot of fun!

I will try to make my next video a bit more structured. For this one I just wanted to get something out there within my busy schedule that was good enough to be helpful and spark some discussion, and I think it was able to serve that purpose. I don't get any money for this and just do what I can in what little free time I have.

@OneInk-bg7gx Honestly I hear Warzone has mad-strong aim assist for joystick. You could try using "As Joystick" and tweaking it, like how Moskeeto did for the Apex video I showed you, but you might be better off with regular joystick for that game.

How did you get the the game to show the PlayStation button prompts?
@DoubleJumpPunch
@DoubleJumpPunch 10 месяцев назад
It should be an option in the game settings, I believe it's Prompt Style -> Style 2? Just try all of them, they're not called PlayStation, XBox, etc. I actually only changed it to try to stop the flickering back to keyboard prompts. It didn't work but I like the PS icons, haha.

Try changing the default Enable Button from Right Stick/Pad Touch to a free trigger or button like a back button. That way you can choose to enable it only when you need it and play normally when you don't. Also try the new Gyro To Mouse [Beta] option which might feel more precise. You can ignore most of the settings, maybe just try adjusting the horizontal/vertical mixer ratio. Remember that you still do most of your turning with the stick or pad, and just use gyro for finer aiming.

Hey I was just watching and I was finding it interesting how differently you use your deck. I don't use the trackpad like that at all. The trackball friction is a sensory indicator and needs to be on medium to low. Putting your thumb back on the pad stops it. After setting the sensitivity to where I can roughly yet comfortably do 90 degree left and right from center to edge i flick my thumb in the direction I want to go. The haptics give you a feeling of travel which you break with dropping your thumb. I run my thumb along the pad afterwards for precision. No gyro, no thumbstick needed. IMO Flick Stick/gyro is over complicating a simple task. Maybe for competitive gaming. One thing I do agree with is the trackball randomly turning (the deck needs a palm rejection of sorts) this can be jarring but since you were using guitar analogy I will add that like clean picking and fretting i need to apply the same care to the track pad.
@DoubleJumpPunch
@DoubleJumpPunch 8 месяцев назад
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and settings! Yes, in the end everyone is unique and has their own preferences. I am constantly adjusting mine and like to mix it up too, sometimes I play trackpad without gyro, sometimes I play stick without gyro or aim assist at all as well, etc.
@aboveaveragebayleaf9216
@aboveaveragebayleaf9216 7 месяцев назад
Good gyro gives a sense of connection with the input that I feel Nintendo tried, and failed to capitalize on back with the Wii. It simply gives a larger plane of movement to be precise. I do understand why flickstick is jarring, but to be frank, normal stick aiming isn't that great on its own. I do agree that it is more for competitive shooters though as crossplay is becoming more common. We need to make the input options more accurate and responsive without things like aim assist.
@jam6000
@jam6000 7 месяцев назад
@@aboveaveragebayleaf9216 I definitely get what you're saying. Gyro is great when set up well and used with an external screen or detached controllers . I have experimented with using it with higher sensitivitys on handheld mode but I personally need a tactile button trigger for it like adding it to LT or assigning L4. I don't really play competitive games anymore and I think if I still did I would opt for the fastest method regardless of how I felt about it to have an edge and dynamics . Steam deck is just fun like the Wii and I want the most comfortable experience. And to touch on auto-aim.... I actually used to be anti-auto-aim in all circumstances and I still am in a competitive scenario but for games like GTA or 3rd person titles where there's a weighty feel to the character I find auto aim just gives that sense that you are controlling someone rather than are someone this giving a cinematic quality to the immersion although I think misfiring and random crap shots / flukes should be added to auto aim to make it more cinematic. At the end 9f the day I could poke and suggest stuff till the cows come home 😁

With the triggers have you tried using the trigger dampening setting.
@DoubleJumpPunch
@DoubleJumpPunch 11 месяцев назад
I tried dampening a little and decided I could do without it for now. IMO, moving my trigger finger to the left hand both reduced jitter and improved ergonomics, without having to slow my aim down. I like to keep my scheme as simple and 1-to-1 "mouse-like" as possible. That's why I don't use dampening, and I prefer to have gyro activated on simple touch (instead of, say, on left trigger pull, as is commonly recommended). I think of it like mid-game DPI-switching with a mouse: technically you *could* do it, but most players recommend against it as it just adds more cognitive overhead. Instead it's advised to focus on setting one balanced sensitivity, and building up muscle memory for various situations with that setting. But if dampening works for you, great!
@aboveaveragebayleaf9216
@aboveaveragebayleaf9216 7 месяцев назад
On the steam controller, there is a tactile click between the soft and full pull. I ended up setting up soft pull to do 30% gyro dampening, and full pull for fire. It essentially let's me have two sensitivities for different ranges. That is for team fortress 2 at least. It might work okay on the steam deck as well, but you'd have to mess with the haptics/trigger activation points.
@Mennenth
@Mennenth Год назад
Unless something drastic has changed from the sc to the sd, I wouldnt recommend increasing the smoothing. It increases the latency too much. At max, it feels like dragging the cursor through thick mud. Even a decent chunk above default, it feels like dragging through syrup. The default feels like swiping through water, and off feels frictionless. Personally I'd rather have a very snappy response over a sluggish one. I play at very high sensitivities both trackpad and gyro, and the small amount of jitter present from no smoothing hasnt really bothered me once muscle memory set in. I could never get used to putting shooting to the left trigger. Since I do all my aiming with gyro, the issue of reduced right trackpad control while holding the right trigger is irrelevant.
@DoubleJumpPunch
@DoubleJumpPunch 11 месяцев назад
Smoothing actually does work significantly from the Steam Controller, I don't know exactly why. I believe you saw my Steam Controller video with Borderlands 2, my Smoothing for that was low like yours, definitely below 5. I forgot exactly how it felt when I tried high smoothing, but yes, it did feel off. Maybe I'll post a video comparing my settings for the two, I don't see too many actual usage comparisons of both the Deck and SC controls. They feel different in many ways. Smoothing is more just a suggestion anyway, for people starting out and struggling with trackpad control. Like vertical scale, they can try dialing it back as they get better. The left/right trigger issue becomes less important if you treat trackpad + gyro aim as either/or, like you do. Stick + gyro also naturally tends to be a more either/or scheme as well. Personally I sort of use them together in conjunction. I would say it matters more when you use Fullscreen Mouse Region for top-down or side-scrolling twin-stick shooters, where you aim only using the trackpad, without gyro. I played a lot of Noita on the Steam Deck, so I came from that background. Left trigger click also made Desktop Mode usage much easier for me.

Maybe it has something to do with the higher polling rate for the sd

have you tried putting a d pad on the same mouse trackpad aswell? i have tried this both with mode shift (requires a click of the pad and that can trow off your aim) and with a layer shift on touch. For the mode shift i put the mouse on the normal pad and the d pad on the mode shift. So when i swipe the pad it is a mouse and when i click on the 4 edges of the dpad cross it is weapon select. I also tried it with a layer shift on touch. For this i put the d pad weapons on the normap pad. then i use the outer ring bind to shift to a layer with a mouse. Then i invert the layer and make the deadzone on the d pab really big. on the the outer ring bind gets a start press. and on the mouse layer i use the touch action and choose release press to switch back to the d pad layer. So when i touch the pad in the centre it is a normal mouse pad. and when i tap the very edges of the pad i can select weapons. You do need to make the deadzone very big and also use a really big radius of the inverted ring binding to make it feel good. I can start the swipe very close to the edge of the trackpad and still have a mouse. This all depends on how big the deadzone is and how big the ring radius is. but it worked great. I did it this way because clicking the pad trows of my aim. and now i can also have a normal click action in the middle of the pad by putting that on the mouse trackpad layer.

The physical sensation of trackpads of any kind makes me literally cringe after prolonged use, so I’ll personally probably never move away from RS + Gyro. That said, anything that contributes to dismantling the exclusive analog stick paradigm is a WIN in my book. EDIT: thanks for the shout out at the end! FYI I recently rebranded from ‘zeroaim’ to ‘zerocore’.

Hey, what's up! Yeah, it definitely depends on subtle individual factors like that and hand size, shape, background, etc. Gyro is arguably the bigger game changer for shooters and works well with most any turning scheme. This is just another option for anyone still struggling to find what works for them. Rebrand noted, look forward to more videos!

I agree! Playing competitively on a 800p handheld in general will be difficult. However, that doesn't discount the viability of the trackpad vs. stick for proficiently playing single-player and PvE games. Although PvP FPS is popular, I don't think only those players "matter". But yes, if you just care about being the best, keyboard/mouse or controller with free aimbot (i.e. modern aim assist) is still the way to go.

I have to disagree. I play much competetive games like apex. And when you have to track targets for a long time, its better to to aim with sticks. Because with sticks you can make a steady smooth aim in one direction, while making corrections with gyro. With the trackpat the aim is too choppy for that. But for games with enemys wich die fast, the trackpat is fine, because you dont have to track enemys for so long and you only need flicks most of the time.
@DoubleJumpPunch
@DoubleJumpPunch 7 месяцев назад
I can see it being game-dependent, but did you see that I recommend smooth trackpad with gyro, too?
@Eduardo-ig6qm
@Eduardo-ig6qm Год назад
Back when I was learning to use the Steam Controller I pretty much came to the same conclusions. At first I relied on trackball mode to do 180s and other big movements and soon found it to be unreliable. You end up lifting your thumb too much, so that extra time it takes for the trackball to get to where you want + putting your thumb back on the pad impacts your reaction time quite a lot. It feels fine for most PvE games, but you will feel it in PvP. Then, moving to a higher sens to get a 180 from the pad alone necessitates lowering the vertical scale, since small deviations on the horizontal movement would significantly affect the flick direction. I haven't tried the smoothing, though. I remember it being pretty bad on the SC, but they probably improved it for the SD, will test it out later.
@DoubleJumpPunch
@DoubleJumpPunch Год назад
Yeah, from what I remember, I had to set low smoothing on the Steam Controller, but on Deck smoothing worked much better for me. I don't know why but may be inherent differences in the hardware.
