I literally cannot play pc games on the couch without trackpad and gyro.

Thanks so much for this, it’s already playing better. Few questions though - I’ve never used gyro before, should I be taking my thumb off of the right trackpad when aiming? I feel like it’s competing with each other. Also, what are the settings if I want to lower my sensitivity some? I know it’s all tied together so if I change one thing I change everything else

The game ignores my trackpad when I set it to "Mouse Region". How did you get around this issue?

Deck shooters and setting up with trackpad is great for game like Prodeus or Ion Fury I could see it being less attractive with zoomer games but I am not soy so I don't play those

I thought I might not like them much upon getting my Deck a few weeks ago, but now I like them more than I could have expected. I am so glad I didn't get the Legion Go, Ally or any other handheld because the Deck Oled is just amazing and cool to use them in Warframe for right touch pad aim and left is for abilty swipes (operator is click). The customization is one of the best things about the Deck.

Trackpads are best used for gyro stopping buttons. Touch response is faster than any button.

Any advice on holding the deck comfortably.

After setting this up for 2hrs i love this a lot, however i wish the process was much simpler and easier on steams end. I hope one day i can just use standard gamepad setup with the touchpad configured like this without issues on some games

great video man! this is such an amazing control scheme, I am genuinely surprised it is not more commonly known/talked about. Makes a world of difference. Same with the full screen mouse region for 2d games. The trackpads are the main reason I got a steam deck- its so impressive how much like kbm these control schemes are

What buttons do you use for dash, cast, attack & special attack?

i literally can't figure this out and it's sriving me insane. turning off the auto-detect and mouse region is fine, but then even after i map keys it won't recognise the keys. am i just an idiot? i love noita but i can't go far on deck because i'm using official layout :/

Mastering Gyro is necessary for FPS games, i wish the gyro was more accurate, my phone does a better job, but it's better than nothing.

Agree it's much better. It's a bridge between the awkward inaccurate input of an analogue stick and the point click accuracy of a mouse. I use the trackpad whenever possible, it's one of the things that puts the Steam Deck above other handheld options for me.

Some games even have official support for Steam Input and will even show the appropriate icons for the Steam Deck buttons in-game. One such example is Prey from Arkane Studios. The official layout for the game is also pretty good. I wish there was an universal system that would allow changing in-game button prompts even in games that don't officially support Steam Input. It's hard to remember which button was which in some games that were designed for a keyboard in mind.

Thank you so much for this guide! I've been wanting to play FPS games on the Deck, but the touchpad never felt right. Your settings felt much much better, although of course I had to tweak it a little bit to suit me. There's still a learning curve to using the touchpad and gyro, but it already feels great just having used these settings for an hour. Switching the trigger sides also helps a lot, even though I pressed the wrong trigger a lot initially. :D

I'm playing Magicka (an action-adventure game) on the Steam Deck and the trackpads vastly enhance the gameplay. Touch Menus with cascading menus with more than 30 items, each of which are input sequences, all powered by the trackpad. So the trackpads are awesome even in games other than FPS, TPS and RTS games.

Great video. Question: I use an Xbox controller with Steamdeck especially titanfall2 and for some reason a recent update made the controller not work. Since then, I’ve been remapping and adjusting it but I have one glaring issue: how do you make the left trigger puller release from aim view once you release the trigger? When I press it and let go the aim is still there. Thank you!

I find what puts a lot of strain on my hand is a tendency to "hover" the thumb over the trackpad, so only its tip will touch the pad. With the stick, you can rest your whole thumb on it. Maybe it's a matter of building up some muscles in the right spots, or developing the habit of a more relaxed thumb. Anyhow, I can't play these games with a stick for the life of me, so these tips definitely help. It's so great the steam deck allows remapping controls like you want, that way we're not at the mercy of each game's config options and what it lets us remap.

For a big part of my life smartphones were the only access to video games to me, particularly a mobile one. As part of that i learned touch controls whilst not really ever having used controllers much, especially not for shooter games. Steam deck having touch controls is an immense selling point, as it allows me to play most of the games/genres i like or prefer with a kb/m. Though i only did get it a few days ago so i still have a lot of ways to go before i feel comfortable using the device as a whole.

I just want to know how do I set up trackpads as hotkey. On hotkey function it's not letting me input not the left or right trackpad.

Who the fuck said they are not as good as the sticks? Just take your time and test every option it offers for customization because they are almost on par with a mouse. I cant even play an fps game without track pad the stick is just too imprecise.

I can imagine how stupid one looks who thinks the trackpads suck. No way going forward, can't imagine a next gen Deck without trackpads, God forbid. I even stopped wanting anything else, no piece of hardware would satisfy needs and all needs are indeed satisfied. Bought a dualsense for when playing docked but because it has trackpad and gyro. I like the Xbox controller much more but trackpad and gyro is just unbeatable, even though the trackpad on dualsense is unfortunatelly almost unusable because of it's awful placement and stiffness.

as a PC gamer, who basically hate controllers for my whole life... having this trackpad it's huge! I can play all my pc games on it, without having to use the damn controller for games that I need speed. the other guys at asus don't get it... but that's why I picked the deck

This layout is really convenient, especially trackpads, but it has drawbacks, one of them is very significant: 1) hitting the trackpad very often is activated by accident. When you switch to another weapon, and then put your thumb on the trackpad again, you accidentally activate the kick, although you just need to aim at the enemy. You can even see it in your video when you often hit unexpectedly, although you want to just visit the enemy with a trackpad. This is the most significant drawback, which is very hindered. As a new user of SD, I don’t know how to remake buttons well, so I don’t know how to solve this problem. 2) The second drawback is the lack of a weapon selection wheel, but I know that you assigned each button for a specific weapon, so this is an insignificant drawback.

These Dom Ethernet videos has motivated me to continue my (2nd) playthrough of the game and hopefully not just stop playing before the final 2 missions like in my first.

Problems with Steam Input are likely the biggest reasons why people have a bad experience trying to use the Touchpads on the Deck. The Steam Controller is much more responsive using third party mappers which makes using the Touchpads easier. Going dual Touchpad works well. Also, Steam Input cannot reach max output to a virtual X360 joystick so mapping Touchpad to Joystick would feel a bit slow in many games.

Tracks on Desktop Mode are a God sent. I can't imagine not using them. Even in gaming mode its easier to navigate with them during a gameplay, like, in the menus etc.
