“Top of the mountain”
Intended to hike the whole trail in 2 days but only completed slightly over half the trail cut the trail short by hiking back to Masten Camping Area (trailhead) using Pleasant Stream Road
The challenging trail has some steep climbs that may require slightly climbing but the climbs are Short
Plenty of water on the trail
Recommend using google maps and downloading maps of the area
I had no cell service 45 mins away from the trailhead
Take a capable vehicle as slight off road will be needed to reach the trailhead
Trailhead location
Pleasant Stream Rd, Canton, PA 17724
The Old Loggers Path (OLP) is a 27.1 mi (43.6 km) loop hiking trail in Lycoming County in north-central Pennsylvania in the United States. Marked with international orange blazes, the Old Loggers Path is located entirely within the Loyalsock State Forest. Most hikers take two and a half to three days and two nights to complete the Old Loggers Path, making it popular for weekend hikes. Highlights of the trail include waterfalls, several scenic streams, and creeks (most of which do not have bridges), and panoramic vistas.

Don't feel bad about not finishing. OLP was my first backpacking trip back in 2016. Me and a friend attempted it in October and we were not prepared at all. Got caught in the rain and then the temp dropped 20 degrees overnight. We were soaked, cold and miserable. We cut or trip short and took a fire road out to the car. I went back in 17 with my pup and did the whole trail. It's definitely worth finishing!

The scenery is beautiful out there. I’ve heard a lot of cool stuff about that trail. Always better to be safe than sorry when going over water crossings. You probably made the wise decision on turning back. Cool video 👍

Thanks for sharing man! Nice to know what conditions might be like that time of year. Cutting it short was definitely the right call; there's no way to safely cross water like that in those temps without special gear or stripping down, and with a dog no less. It's been a little while but in case you are still looking for suggestions, my dog carries a short ZLite Sol pad strapped to the top of his pack (also protects the silnylon tent floor!), and I just got the Drop Pine Down Blanket that stuffs perfectly into the 4l pouch on one side of his backpack. It's more than enough to keep him toasty below 20F, I could double it over him so he's even warmer, and it serves as a warm weather quilt for me. My dog is double coated though, fwiw.

We encountered similar damp trails up in Algonquin in September '18, planned ahead by getting waterproof socks (Randysun). Our Lone Peaks still got wet, but our feet stayed mostly dry (some condensation, but minimal). No waist deep crossings for us either! We really enjoy the OLP, thanks for sharing!

Yeah, come back & finish the OLP ---a great PA trail! And don't forget your rain gear! And a warmer sleeping bag if in winter. And maybe waders to cross Pleasant Stream? Glad you also were able to do the BFT ---one of my favorites! :-)
