The line "I'm so old my career is a teenager" hurt more than it should have.

SmarterEveryDay *sigh, me too. But what really hurt at time was walking around RU-vid Australia and trying to ignore the reality of Creators and Community people all being young enough to be my kids. Still had a great time, but got a few confused looks LOL
@Czadzikable
@Czadzikable 6 лет назад
SmarterEveryDay , hah yeah, I get that feeling.. but on the other hand, if you look at it from another perspective, it's also quite impressive! Overall an experienced, wise sage, is more impressive and respectable than an enthusiastic but inexperienced youth.. I do myself enjoy the allure and feeling of wide-eyed youth and freedom.. but it also saddens me when people and society in general seems to forget the values of wisdom and experience that come with age and instead devalue and discard "being old" as undesirable in comparison to being youthful and pretty.. of course I acknowledge the preferable physical benefits of better health and energy in youth versus old age.. BUT if you're taking about a "career", which is more related to mental knowledge and experience, then I'd say the "older" it is the better! So appreciate your "teenage career!' ^_^ (Btw, love your videos!)

My mother is the pickiest eater in our house, and when she has a girls' night with her friends my dad and I will have an "everything mom hates but we love" dinner. I’ve been taking a break from Twitter (and all social media, but Twitter was my biggest obsession) and I can relate to a lot of what you’re saying, even though I’m only 19 and maybe not quite old enough (or masculine enough?) to be an old man yelling at a cloud. There's a lot of time that I’ve gained back; I’ve read so many marvelous books including Roxanne Gay’s Hunger, Joyce’s Ulysses, and also your book Turtles all the way down. I’ve listened to audiobooks and podcasts, discovered new RU-vid channels and rediscovered running. But I’ve also sacrificed the friendships that I kept up with using social media. I’m more isolated than I was a few months ago. It’s hard to strike a balance between the good and the bad with social media, and maybe that’s how we know it’s an authentic human creation.

This has largely been my experience as well. I will occasionally go social media free (typically by blocking all my typical time wasting websites while I gear up for finals). Every time I am amazed at how much more productive I am with other things. I also really love taking a break from the more stupid aspects of social media--there is always someone posting annoying things or selling something or sharing stories that aren't true or getting into worthless arguments. But I do miss being able to sort of keep up with what's happening in the lives of friends who live far away or whose schedules don't mesh with mine, and I also miss the ease of sharing news in my own life with a large number of people all in one go. The cons have had me on the cusp of quitting facebook, but the pros keep pulling me back in.

"I'm so old that my career is a teenager." oh god I just realized I have a new fear in life. 😳 No but for real, my mom always used to say "50 is the new 40!" and then "60 is the new 50!" and I'm sure she'll say "70 is the new 60!" when she gets up there. Aging blows in a lot of ways, but what comes with age is wisdom, and that combined with a relatively optimistic outlook can allow you to accomplish so many beautiful things, no matter your age. Keep crushing it in the garden, John! ❤️

CulpFiction i disagree. When you are realy old you have 0 responsability and you can get away with everything.
@CulpFiction
@CulpFiction 6 лет назад
I guess I completely disagree with that. To me, the older you get, the _more_ responsibility you have. Supporting a family, being a model citizen, using the powers you've gained and learned from the years to create good, meaningful, and responsible change to the world, and so on. When you're young, you can afford to be selfish and carefree because nobody necessarily depends on you. But the older you get, the more people do.

When I think of one day owning a house I actually really do get super excited to have a garden. Also to have a big enough kitchen to bake bread. Mind you, I'm not that young in internet years (27), but still. I want to grow basil, tomatoes, green beans, and cucumbers at least. I've helped my dad grow most of those items and I think I can pull it off.
@thatjillgirl
@thatjillgirl 6 лет назад
Not sure what your current living situation is, but you could probably do the basil now if you want to grow it in a pot. I grew a basil plant in a pot out on my apartment patio/balcony. Mine grew big enough that when I harvested the plant at the end of the season, I filled three gallon-sized freezer bags with basil leaves! As long as you have somewhere sunny you can set it, basil will do just fine in a pot.
@hatorigirl1202
@hatorigirl1202 6 лет назад
thatjillgirl I'm afraid it'll get too much direct light outside where I am because my 2 doors have nothing obstructing the sun either sunrise to noon or noon to sunset. And I have no appropriate ledges or tables inside. I'll probably start basil when we eventually have a new apartment. Tomatoes thrive in pots in my area too. Both my dad and cousin are growing from seed this year. One has heirlooms, the other has grape tomatoes.

I have had to stop following a lot of people who write about politics because it made me yell at everything. I do, however, enjoy seeing the good things in life, like DogRates, so I have not entirely quit social media. I put a solar powered fountain in my bird bath yesterday, and have laughed several times at its fitful spurts of fountainy exuberance. It's the little things that get you through. Oh--and I do NOT want to know what is 'developmentally appropriate' for me at this stage of life. I'm sure it's neither bird-bath fountain giggles nor DogRates bliss, and I'm not about to give them up.

But it is tough to balance the pressure to do work and finish school with the desire to make videos with my friends and enjoy the last shreds of my teenage years. I’m worried I’m going to lose the childish parts of myself I really like: the curiosity, compassion, and the desire to have fun. Let’s hope 30s Nate has some better advice for 20s Nate (because I definitely have some good advice for teenage Nate).

As I've entered young adulthood I've found it helpful to remember that maturity and responsibility do not have to be mutually exclusive with the good parts of childishness. We don't have to pretend that fun things aren't fun just because adults are "supposed to be" serious. And naturally, the vlogbrothers have been constant examples to me that silliness and wisdom can coexist and often complement one another.

laurachel I agree! I think another important thing for me has been embracing how some new things may be fun. I don’t think my idea of fun has stayed the same even in the last 5 years, so learning to accept that change with open arms and not begrudgingly is a good thing.

Speaking from the point of view of someone who is well past the precipice of adulthood, I feel I can say with authority that you can't help growing up but you can help growing old. When I was 18 or so I hated the idea of getting older because I thought that with responsibility I would have to never have fun or laugh again and my whole life would be about working and paying bills and cleaning the house. Turns out, that just like the rest of your life you have experienced so far, it is what you want it to be. If you like the childish parts of yourself, keep them. I like to think I have kept mine :) :) ''Adulthood' ( beyond what is biological) and ''what is expected of adults'' is very heavily influence by our society and culture. This means, it's what ppl think it should be, not necessarily what happens..... Just be yourself, you'll be an adult doing it no matter what. You've been doing it for a few years already, biologically speaking....

Sandra Turk thank you! Some very sage advice. It can seem daunting now but I do think it will work itself out in time.

Nate and Noah Try Life it will. Just remember you don't have to do everything at once or solve all your problems at once. Goodness knows no one else has.

But what are you growing? I'm curious what needs that much space around it. My dad's garden when I was growing up was literally a lump of dirt tall enough for roots that he just dumped on top of our sandy lawn, maybe 8 ft. square.

Beautiful garden! Man, worst part about moving to my dorm room was giving up my garden and sticking to house plants. Anyway, John, great points you made. Tbh, RU-vid is the last social app I have left. I became an obsessive checker, doing 5 second rounds of everything to see if anything new had come up, on every single app. I gave that up; it made me feel worse and worse each day, knowing it was another day wasted. I gave it all up at the encouragement of a couple IRL friends, and have just watched my stress melt away. Crazy man. Your mileage may very though - I'm lucky to be in a place where I can make IRL friends, and didn't have many online friends before dropping it all. My time in high school I spent entirely in the social internet, but I've been content to just do my own thing for this past half year. -young man, yelling at cloud

You have a beautiful garden. I look forward to the day I get to have one again. There is nothing quite like wandering out the back door and picking a few cherry tomatoes or pulling fresh beets out of the ground moments before you wash, slice, and prepare them for dinner. I add my voice to the group that would absolutely be down for a garden tour.

i like your garden, John. My wife and I live in an apartment, but managed to get into a local community garden program, so down the road we have a little plot that we tend, and grow flowers and vegetables alongside out neighbors. it's a great place to be with nature and see the progress of your work and relax.

I don't understand how you make topics so mundane become so profound. Honestly, there's videos you and Hank have posted from 2011 I still think about on a daily basis. I want to thank you for being on the social internet. Your presence has so positively impacted myself and countless others. But while I would be saddened by your leaving, I would understand if you needed to. Your mental health is a million times more valuable. My mentor always says, "you can't pour from an empty glass." Thank you again. I like this idea. I think I'm going to start implementing it. Also, I totally remember that episode

This is one of my favorite videos in a while (despite loving them all). I'm not quite thirty, but I've been feeling this way a lot lately. I've found myself moving away from Social Media as a whole and moving closer towards specific communities like this one that feed and inspire me. About a month ago I deleted my Facebook app, and since then I've read eight books. I'll be spending this weekend in my garden. My point is that I don't know whether age is the reason for this feeling, or if it's just a natural reaction many of us are having in the face of a particularly stressful and overwhelming time in politics, media, and the internet. If that's the case, then maybe some good can come of this awfulness, if it drives us away from the things that were distracting and draining us, and closer towards the things that fulfill us and bring us real joy.
